Personally, I'd keep the Luscombe over the Cub. Luscombes are a bit more squirrelly on the ground, but are a lot fun, not to mention quite a bit faster on the same hp. You also will command a bit more respect as a tailwheel pilot if you fly a Luscombe.
I’d keep the Luscombe too. Of course, I already own an 8E! Don’t buy the hype that they’re more squirrelly on the ground. They are just more responsive to the rudder pedals on the ground. If you try and taxi it like a Cub, stomping on the pedals, you’ll ground loop it. They like finesse, like any grand lady does!
By squirrelly, I meant essentially what you said. You have to have a bit more finesse, that said, I and countless others learned to fly tailwheels in a Luscombe. If I knew a guy only had Luscombe time, I'd let him go fly a Cub. If a guy only had Cub time, I wouldn't let him fly the Luscombe without getting some training in it.
@@mikeryan6277 All great airplanes and a lot of fun to fly. Also more comfortable, especially if you are a bit taller. Cubs and Champs cost a fortune for a good one, Chiefs are a really good airplane that you can find for reasonable money.

I loved flying the 8A. I put around 150 hours on the all metal wing version in 4 years while I was in college. I found wheel landing to be the best way control it on the ground. Many of my college friends got their first experience flying in in a small plane with me. They had a lot of fun watching me hand prop it. This was flat-out the most fun seat-of-the-pants low and slow experience I ever had in the air. Wish I could afford one now. Thanks for the memories Jimmy.
Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy, give us more videos, more often. You have quickly become my favorite UA-cam channel!!! I love your wit, your personality, your intelligence, your boldness, your humor, really, I love everything about your videos. Except you don't make enough of them. HELLLLP!
I agree with the Luscombe over a Cub! Jimmy, you would have better starting if you pulled the prop thru when priming. I had a 65 HP Chief and a Luscombe - both hand start, and they started very well in summer and winter. I think they were Eisman mags which were made with platinum points- never had trouble with them. Slick mags are ok if you overhaul them every 400-500 hours, and they do not hand start near as well.
I think the engine would have started on maybe 2 because Jessy did a couple of half-assed pulls on the prop 😀I think he was trying to rig the competition on how may it would to take to get it going...hahaha
My late father-in-law was a retired airline check pilot and when he hung up his monkey suit and came home to stay he added a sweet old Luscombe 8 to his harem of Cub Cruisers, Meyers, and Mooney's. This is a guy who flew everything from Constellations to 747-400's but he absolutely loved that Luscombe airplane. I pray this one brings you as much joy.

My ODD has beat me to death. I have been avoiding it since you started this trek. The American flag they have hanging in the back should have the stars on the left side if they are hanging it like that. Love your series so far.
Cold compression checks are higher than hot because the cylinder is a choke bore & expands to straight when hot. Cold the rings are tight & oil thick. Also you can buy gaskets & screens for old fuel bowls at tractor supply.
Jimmy… You didn’t want to love my comment to Miss Vickie? I was just teasin her… She’s a friend of mine. I used to fly out of her airport and she and her Dad took good care of our airplane
My first solo was in a Luscombe 8F. Was fun to fly especially on skis, this was back in 1965. My first lesson was at 8,000 feet because of turbulance and a hawk passed over head just a few feet above us. I was amazed to see a bird at that altitude. In my later years of flying I was engaged with a couple birds flying at altitude at night. One made a mess of my Twin Comanche's wind screen and another on the nose of my Aztec.
I have a Taylorcraft if you haven't started it in awhile need to pickup tail pretty high to prime oil pump make sure prop is horizontal som it doesn't hit ground.

Nice plane hardest to land for sure. This plane is where the saying " you fly in until the engine stops" comes from. A humbling ground looping landing / taxi is guaranteed the minute you stop paying attention.
When I was in High School, I told my dad, "Someday I will own an airplane." He said: "No Son, you will not." I am in my 70's now and never did own an airplane. 😿

You must keep the luscombe, I’ve been looking for one here in Europe ( uk ) since selling my tb9 aircraft after 22 great years, now I’m just want a classic
No way I would keep the Piper Cub that Luscombe is superior in every way. Plus, I think that the Piper Cub would sell for more money than the Luscombe.
I know other people have said this, but I'm going to chime in as well. If I had the choice to keep the Luscombe or keep the Cub, I'd keep the Luscombe. I learned how to fly in a Luscombe. Yes, they are not as forgiving on the ground as certain other tailwheel planes, but all that does is make you a more conscientious pilot with better finesse on the ground. The Luscombe is fast for the hp because of that slick all-metal design. My brother-in-law's 65hp Luscombe could out-cruise his friend's 90hp Cub. Luscombes are also more rare and turn more heads at the fly-ins.
All metal luscombe over a fabric cub with all the problems of fabric. And the sturdy compartmentalize construction of the luscombe. Better air speeds on the same horsepower. Luscombes were too narrow for two full size men in my opinion. I like the tandem seating and open door flying better. Both are super sweet planes.
I’d keep the Luscombe too. Of course, I already own an 8E! Don’t buy the hype that they’re more squirrelly on the ground. They are just more responsive to the rudder pedals on the ground.
