This was one of my mother’s favorite songs by her favorite musician. My mother died 6 years ago today. I’m playing this song (and other songs she liked) in memory of her.
    RIP Mom. ♾️🕊️❤️🌻🎵

Janis Joplin was my mother’s favorite female vocalist. This song is bittersweet for me: it was my mom’s favorite Janis Joplin song and usually makes me cry. RIP mom and Janis.

Janis Joplin’s rendition (late 60s) of “Summertime” is probably the best-known and most awesome of all pop versions of George Gershwin’s ever so famous aria (composed in 1934 for the 1935 opera “Porgy and Bess”).
Yes, the one who was aptly nicknamed “PEARL” was THAT FORMIDABLY GIFTED‼️
ONE SHEER MUSICAL GEM… then, now and for aeons❕ 💜💎💚
Always loved, never forgotten, forever missed will you remain, Janis Lyn Joplin (1943 - 1970)… 🌹

♀ Tina Turner also shares her admiration for Janis Joplin’s music, saying, “She had a black soul. She felt. Her singing wasn’t about anything else except the feeling that she got. And she wasn’t trying to be anything else but Janis Joplin.” ♀

    • @christinaperrigo
      @christinaperrigo 3 місяці тому

Black. White. Red. Green. Yellow. She had a soul. When Turner was getting the crap beat outta her, she was simply a woman, a human soul born into sin. ... and yet, still proud to be a TURNER. Hmmm. ... Tina Turner and Everyone Else Alike have rose colored glasses... or lily colored glasses... or lavender colored glasses... or tiger lily colored glasses.... UGGGGHHHH. Janis was a human, just as Tina, just as myself.... sad and lonely without Jesus Christ.

Big Brother and the Holding Company does a fabulous job on this song - just the single tune introduction - and the explosion into a loud raw sound, th suden sharp cutoff at 2:38 - back to a singel-tune - that's all AMAZING ... Janis does, too, together they are unbeatable, and create a sound of their own. Nothing like this, not even - and much less - in 2024.

YEAH!!! I'm looking at 70 here and can't believe I got this far! Anyway I really miss Sister Janis and her vocalizations, man what a set of pipes. As the bride of 48 years said across the breakfast table "babe do you think the current crop of "pop tarts" as she puts it will be around 50 years from now"? I looked across the table and said "probably but their music won't have the impact Janis had". She paved the way for them and they don't get it. When you only have a handful of song writers, auto tune and no talent to start with you get what we have now, crap! Be well and safe, peace to you and yours.

I can remember when this album came out everybody was disappointed with it. Summertime was on it, but Janis live could sing this one for a long time with people begging her not to stop. Great San Francisco groups had to be seen live. Record companies was better than nothing, the real action was in the Park. An average crowd might be around 8,000- 12, 000. Thousands dancing, everybody very high. The whole scene without real problems. We had a young baby, but our 6-8 year old would disappear into the crowd. He might be gone most of the day. We would ask him where he went, he would say he found somebody to play with. A very different world in those days. He is a computer programmer in San Diego. Big Brother and the Holding Company was always a favorite. The fun part was that the great SF groups had only a short walk to the park, and back home. Great times for most of the crowd, but times were shorter for some. Certain people told Janis that she was wasting her time with Big Brother, but some us of knew better. She was very special as Big Brother and the Holding Company.

Skipped school one day in 1967 (?); Wednesday mid day, Dick Cavett show comes on and unbeknownst to me one of his guests that particular day was Janis fuckin' Joplin! He tried interviewing her but she was kinda stoned and giggled a lot and kept looking off stage, and finally she gets up and walks over to where Big Brother was set up and waiting for her. So she goes and gets behind the mike and just stone-cold slams out this song and "Ball and Chain".

People who know a lot more about music than me say she left Big Brother for better instrumentalists in Kosmic Blues and Full Tilt Boogie, both of which I love, but the rawness of Big Brother just seems to me to be the perfect compliment to her style which is very raw and visceral. In 55 years since I first began listening to Janis, there is still no one I would rather listen to.

They don't know what they are talking about. James Gurley and Sam Andrew are two of the most amazing guitarists I have ever heard. How many guitarists can get that kind of feeling? How many guitarists have gotten tones as amazing as James Gurley? How many guitarists have ever played melody as well as Sam Andrew? I love Janis Joplin. But 200 years from now they will laugh at you if you think Janis is the only genius on this record. 200 years from now they will be talking about James Gurley and Sam Andrew as legends and speaking in amazed tones at how we got the two of them and the great Janis Joplin, three incredible legends, on the same record. Kozmic Blues and especially Full Tilt Boogie are great bands, but there is no one there who can match Janis Joplin, and here there are two. Sam Andrew was in the Kozmic Blues band too, but his legendary playing is here in Big Brother when James Gurley was motivating him to his genius level. In terms of raw emotion, there is no one better. Even better that they play in very different, complimentary styles and have a fine bassist and drummer to back them up, a bassist and drummer with good strong feeling. Legends. In my mind these are legends, and like Bach, history will come around and discover James Gurley and Sam Andrew. And especially, as you say, in terms of pure, raw emotion. So much better than processed music. Real, raw emotion, staggering beauty and power, staggering, immense, raw, very real emotion. You can feel it. No one does it better.
To have heard those three and the entire group together live must have been incredible. Feeling that kind of emotion, expressed like that, live... wow. Wow!

    Summertime, time, time
    Child, the living's easy
    Fish are jumping out
    And the cotton, Lord
    Cotton's high, Lord, so high
    Your daddy's rich
And your ma's so good-looking, baby
    She's looking good now
Hush, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby
No, no, no, no, don't you cry
    Don't you cry
    One of these mornings
You're gonna rise, rise up singing
    You're gonna spread your wings
Child, and take, take to the sky
    Lord, the sky
    But 'til that morning
Honey, n-n-nothing's going to harm you now
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
    Don't you cry
    Oh, ooh

And Grace Slick and the Airplane showed . Battle of the Bands. Hey of a show. 2dollars and 50 cents a person. Never get those prices again. Never have a night like either

Anton Lamont It's more than that. I'm talkin' about the stylization. It's acid bluesy...makeup...is so different than the pop, soul & jazz versions. I've heard Ella, Miles , Sublime, Herbie Mann, Sam Cooke, Sinatra, Billy Stewart, Callas, Celine Dion, Kathleen Battle, "Sassy" (Sarah Vaughn), Buble', etc... Yet this one is perfection.
