She was very fast, and her stitches were perfectly formed & spaced. So, one day I asked her, how do you do that? "Come here and I'll show you". Long story short...I was all thumbs, I couldn't get it right at all and I remember her looking at me, saying, "you've got to pickup every stitch" otherwise it gets to be a mess. For me, it IS a new song. I can't believe it took me 50 years to finally listen to it! Right now is my first time, and I'm glad to hear this. Some friends of mine covered it last night at a performance in Buffalo. That peaked my interest. Unusual, because I love the music from the 60s and normally don't need to be sparked like that. We all still have it. :) I really lucked out. I was born in 1960. With six olders siblings and parents who all liked music, I was already paying attention to what they listened to by the time I was three (fall of 63). Then The Beatles came along, the British invasion happened, folk rock, psychedelic, hard rock,... Back then I had no idea how lucky I was, it was just the way things were. Then as the 70's went on things started changing for the worse (for my tastes, not for everyones). But for me those first 10 years or so were just incredible. The industry is so different now and times have changed, so we'll never see anything quite like that again. But I sure enjoyed the ride, and still listen to all that stuff.
It was a time before the non-musician label execs told the artists what to play and how to play it…they just let them have at it and magic was made. Sadly those days are long gone…

Modern "music"? What's that? Seems like a lot of what you hear now are samples of other people's music, electronic beats, someone repeating "baby" a thousand times, "uh" "yo" and a bunch of misogynistic bs.
IMO, Gus Van Sant's movie 'To Die For' (Nicole Kidman) probably did more to promote this tune than anything else. Al Kooper & Steven Stills did a very good musical version on 'Super Session' as well.

An iconic 60s tune with that spaced out guitar and trippy vibe. Tripping now while listening to this rare jewel. Not something you hear on the radio anymore. Does stir up memories of my misspent youth.
@@markevan1__ You have to remember the greedy, grasping music industry was filled with, ah, "promoters" seeking to get get rich quick off these highly talented young musicians of the 60's. The problem with Donovan was he couldn't be pegged into one genre to be marketed. He was a talented unicorn, so the industry that LOVED the Beatles, didn't embrace him.
This is one of my all time favorites. The rustic guitar and the overall feeling of edge on the high notes and outbursts of volume. The whole song smells like cigarettes if that makes sense. Great song.

His lyrics and choice of words always grabbed me. At 73, I can sing all the word s to Catch The Wind and. Wear your Love Like Heaven. I loved the way he used words. I always said he was a bard.
It's so uncanny how the beginning of the verses sound like velvet underground then turns into the doors by the end of the verse and definitely the chorus! That's what my ears hear anyway. Great song from the greatest period of music ever!
Hi, Liz. Could I ask if you remember the ‘60s band Coven? They were fronted by Jinx Dawson. I’ve been wanting to ask people who were actually around to witness the mid to late ‘60s firsthand if they knew about the band Coven at the time. Have you heard of Coven or Jinx Dawson? I’ve been hoping to find people who actually saw Coven perform, or even just knew something about them, during the mid to late ‘60s.
There's a book called Season of the Witch(Named after this song of course) about the turbulent history of San Francisco between 1967 and 1982. It's a good read if San Francisco is special to you, if you like that period of history, or if you just want to read a really good book.

Wow just wow...puts modern music to shame!! ❤1966❤
Truly!
❤
For sure
Modern "music"? What's that? Seems like a lot of what you hear now are samples of other people's music, electronic beats, someone repeating "baby" a thousand times, "uh" "yo" and a bunch of misogynistic bs.
Never charted, never released as a single, still managed to become a classic rock staple. 55 years later, this is just as great as ever.
Or the other way around. Probably reciprocal.
Still stands up now.....classic!!!!

This song came out in 1966, I remember hearing it frequently on the radio in the late 1960s, especially when I lived in San Francisco in 1968.
IMO, Gus Van Sant's movie 'To Die For' (Nicole Kidman) probably did more to promote this tune than anything else. Al Kooper & Steven Stills did a very good musical version on 'Super Session' as well.
This song is an eerie blend of psychedelic and progressive/goth rock 😁

Season of the witch was always the song I thought of with Donovan.
I saw Donavan live. It was just him and his guitar. He was so great. It was a beautiful evening.
"You've got to pick up every stitch"
I put on this tune because JESUS picks up every stitch!
Runs deep.

Ugh, kids these days. Being ill-behaved earlier and earlier.
I suggest locking them in small closets, or trunks until they settle down and stop their demonic nonsense. You gotta be firm.
@@Theevil6ify - Should the trunk be airtight? You could do what one woman did. You could tape it to a wall and then brag about it on UA-cam.

This song is as cool as it gets folks. Nothing comes close to this beauty in this time of age.
An iconic 60s tune with that spaced out guitar and trippy vibe. Tripping now while listening to this rare jewel. Not something you hear on the radio anymore. Does stir up memories of my misspent youth.
All of the world history's known cliches in four sentences!
Not something you heard on the radio back then either. The song was a flop.
I wonder if Donovan was sitting in his room thinking, "Wonder what rhymes with witch?"
Witch
Bitch
Wich
Stich
Etc....
Lol! Good one! Ah ah!
All I can think of is ditch and htch! Lol!

My problem is trying to make "witch" rhyme with "Hillary Clinton".
This is one of my all time favorites. The rustic guitar and the overall feeling of edge on the high notes and outbursts of volume. The whole song smells like cigarettes if that makes sense. Great song.

Bonus
I'm 59.75 yo, & this is one song that has aged beautifully
His lyrics and choice of words always grabbed me. At 73, I can sing all the word s to Catch The Wind and. Wear your Love Like Heaven. I loved the way he used words. I always said he was a bard.

I was there with you passing that joint at golden gate park?
There's a book called Season of the Witch(Named after this song of course) about the turbulent history of San Francisco between 1967 and 1982. It's a good read if San Francisco is special to you, if you like that period of history, or if you just want to read a really good book.
