TOP 5 MISTAKES BEGINNERS MAKE LEARNING GUITAR ONLINE
1- Tensing and twisting the wrist while strumming
Strumming motion begins at the elbow with just a little movement of the wrist. The most important thing it to RELAX the arm and just have enough tension to hold on top the pick
2- Picking is a small motion that should be done with movement of the wrist only
Resting the wrist is optional, but I think it will help most people be more accurate with their picking
3- Putting chord fingers down one at a time
Try making the shape of the chord with your fingers before putting the fingers down
4- Not knowing where the beat falls and understand 'ghost strums' (hand movements that you don't strum)
5- Not building a repertoire of songs

Little bit of column A and a little bit of column B. UA-cam has everything you need to learn the guitar, but it's pretty difficult for a person just starting out to find the right materials and the proper order to learn.

There are many guitar books that have "House Of The Rising Sun" listed as a beginner song. The chord changes are way too fast for a beginner and the correct strumming is tricky even for an intermediate player. I'm glad to hear someone finally point that out.
exactly
If that is the first song you want to learn, then it is fine to take your time and learn it slowly to play it properly. Technically any song can be in a beginner book. As long as they clearly state to play it very slow with a metronome, then build up speed.
first song I ever learned was House of the rising sun, 'twas fun and not as challenging sa you make it sound like.
mahimnastotram a few
This really helped me because I'm a beginner thank you so much 🎸🎸🎸
R.I.P Pick, you were a good inspiration for everyone
I've been playing the guitar for 12 years now, but lately i found myself more often watching beginners videos for guitar playing, because i'm self-trained. I got the basics covered, but it's always good and important to come back to the basics - makes everything else easier.
"Been playing for 12 years now" man I gag when I read sht like that. Nah you nerds havent been playing for that long, your guitar was sitting in its case for that long. If you played and dedicated yourself to actually improve, for 12 years, you'd be places now.

Great tips Andy! Can't stress the fundamentals enough. I think the hard part for most beginners is doing enough work on the fundamentals while still being motivated to get through the first few stages of learning.
But the question is, are these tips just another set of mistakes guitarists are learning, since this video is online

No, his advice is legit. You can also try the mistakes out and see how far they take you. Maybe you like them, but it's more likely they will frustrate you and you will put the guitar away.

No wrist strumming promotes stiffness which is bad. It is best to remain as lose as possible with as little movement as possible which can include both wrist and arm movement. It is best to just focus on not holding any muscle tight and the movement feeling good.

Well done, and thank you for the tips! I have started and topped learning to play guitar so many times. Mainly because I was learning from people who didn't know how to teach. I feel it is very, very important to learn good habits and techniques early, and you just helped me with that!
Excellent video, I've been playing for years and I still go back to refresh on the basics. I like that you just went straight into the lessons without getting sidetracked like so many other online videos.

im no beginner, i've played from age 10 (15 years), but i watched this video anyway. i dont 100% agree with everything he said here. but a northern accent always makes me feel better either way :D

+fadlie aldjufrie Very evident that you are still 9.
+MandishFyre lol for real those kids that say how old they were when they started playing are annoying
imho the cool thing about watching beginner videos "oh.. i need to go back and work on that more..."... seriously :)
No offense, but I completely disagree w the first two. Especially # 2! Resting your palm on the guitar top will muffle the vibration of the sound board giving you a smaller sound and all around inhibit your movements. I used to like to touch the pick guard with my pinky when I pick but am doing away w that as well. And to a certain extant, yes you strum w the elbow, but the wrist is NOT off grounds. I've been doing it for 20 yrs and don't have issues. In fact, if your going for speed metal, all 'down strokes' (Master of Puppets) you do NOT want to use your elbow. Just learn how to hold your wrist properly and you'll have no problems. Peace!
That's what I was gonna say.
Agreed.
yep
MrJahvah Exactly my thoughts aswell
Absolutely.
Thank you very much for your valuable tips and advices!!
Andy, your tips and information are always useful and I really appreciate how you go about it. I have been concentrating too hard on the ups and downs when I should have been trying to feel the rhythm of the song. As a rank beginner, I have come to rely on you and thanks.
Thank you, As a beginner I can't tell you how much I appreciate your insight your Tips are and have been invaluable ! any other Tips on practicing chord changes would be greatly appreciated as well ! getting my fingers to cooperate has become very challenging !!!! thanks again
Some may not like Taylor Swift but her songs are my choices when i started learning the guitar. 😊
i love her songs
I literally just start learning guitar and I'm learning how to play her songs right now lol
Swiftie here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE TAYLOR!!!!!!!!!!WE STAN OUR QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are such a great teacher Andy!
Sage advice at the end. I started playing 25 years ago and wanted to rock right away. Ended up giving up all together. Now I'm starting from scratch and have Wild Thing down pretty well. Thank you!
Im having trouble with my fingers touching other strings that make it sound weird. Should I do stretching exercises?
+boomboompoopify Yes: Search 'Andy guitar finger stretching' 👍🏻
Thanks!
Andy Guitar finger stretching
Me too, but its because I have big hands and fingers. Luckily my dad gave me his old guitar with nylon strings and a wider neck board. Feels great to be able to strum chords/pick strings without distortion.
Andy Guitar finger strerching
Hi. Doing #1 and 2 is not wrong, it's a matter of style or preference. See both Al di Aeola and Alan Mclaughlin in Mediterranean Sundance. They strum from the wrist and do not rest their fingers on the strings.
Sharif Al Humaid hi
Very helpful, thanks Andy!
Amazing Andy, thank you so much!
Hey Andy , Thanks a lot for making me identify my mistakes as a bigginer, i had all the mistakes except the last one coz i'm learning guiyar from you.
Can you do a lesson on how to practice upstrokes when certain strings have to be avoided, depending on which chord it is? I haven't see such a lesson by anyone, yet it's the hardest thing I've tried to do so far.
A huge help! Thank you!
Excellent! Many thanks Andy.
Really love the lessons Andy! I'm at 12 days of practice and it is so much fun! Keep on doing the good work!
How you doing now man?
How is your practice man?
I’m a beginner and getting the rhythm seems to be extremely hard for me so thanks for the advice.
Wassup dude, did you continue playing?
This was so helpful 👌🏻
Very helpful advice. Thanks for the video.
I deffinately fall prey to the one finger at a time c cord. I'll try the excercise you mentioned.
Found out Iv been playing guitar on my left leg for two years...
hahahaa favourite comment
oh my, looks like im not a complete idiot haha, i see youtuber who do covers always rest it on the right and was like "wow" but iv heard the same that it can go both ways.
That's fine as well, especially if you're going to stretch your fingers for difficult chords; I use both positions
ABC DEF Especially fast players like it to play on the left leg :) But when I play accoustic I only play on the right leg :D
ABC DEF i think it's the right position if you re playing classic music
Your videos are really super helpful! Thank you!!
andy i just wanted to say that you are not only a really cool guy from the look of it but an absout genius when it comes to teaching.
your style is really unique and it works big time !!
The first song i ever learned in full was Outlaw State of Mind by Chris Stapleton. Not too hard to play, in my opinion, and a really great sounding song. For those beginners looking for a place to start, I say this is a good one. Midnight train to Memphis is also a good one.
I got a guitar a week ago, turns out I naturally did all the correct things since day 1! So happy, thanks for the video
That’s so great ! And enjoy playing guitar :D
@@ninakoorndijk624 Thank you, appreciate it!
i learnt heaps of beatles songs when i started playing because they have an eclectic range of songs that suit beginners and advanced players. their beats are very melodic and catchy too. plus i just love the beatles.
Amazing video and immensely informative. thanks Andy, bless you
good lord, i think I'm doing most of these mistakes haha

As long as your music sound well, who cares?
Most of these aren't actually mistakes, don't worry about it.
cuz bad technique can result in muscle and tendon damage

I have to disagree with that last point. First of all, wonderwall and house of the rising sun are two of the easiest songs out there. Playing songs you know is the key thing that keeps people interested. I still get a buzz out of it 18 years later. So unless the songs are so ridiculously difficult that attempting them will confuse you, or set you back (I just can't see it - the worst that can happen is you give up trying that song because it's too hard), then go for it.
You'll find out pretty quickly whether it's too hard for you or not. And in any case, the challenge is what improves people. There's no reason to pick up bad habits this way more than playing anything else.
I just don't like the attitude of "don't even attempt" some songs. For some people, just playing the first chord of their favourite song - is enough to give them a kick and keep them interested. It's the only reason people learn guitar in the first place, and the only reason they keep playing. It doesn't have to be all boring stuff.
For a beginner Wonderwall is much more difficult than you would think. Most can play the general idea of it, but the strumming pattern is a little tricky and not something that a beginner will master until later. In fact, many covers on UA-cam have intermediate players who don't have the strumming pattern down. As a massive Oasis fan, I would know.
And I completely agree that beginners should learn songs they like, because that's what keeps it interesting and is usually the reason they picked up a guitar in the first place. The same applied to me when I first started - I never tried to learn a nursery rhyme or scale. I bought an Oasis chord book and went to town.
+Fire Dolphin perhaps a lot of them can play it but can't sing at the same time? I hear that issue. I can play a lot of stuff but can't keep the right rhythm while trying to sing at the aka time
Yep, I agree. The first proper song I learned was House of the Rising Sun, but I think the most important thing is to pick a song that you like and actually want to be able to play!
love it!! thanks a lot. x
Very helpful. Thank You!
Advising students to hold the wrist rigid, when playing rhythm, needs to be removed. Try playing The Beatles' 'All my Lovin'' with just the elbow. You won't be able to do it and you'll have an aching arm after trying.
7:59 hahaaa
+Roland Letea I completely missed that, xD
:D
Keep cool... keep cool XD
+Roland Letea Now it's lost forever! Gone to another dimension from my experience!
+Duff Man haha yeah defo went to another dimension! I had 4 picks placed on my night stand and couple of weeks back one of them just disappeared and I never played with that one! they really do have minds of their own
Just starting to learn. You're awesome.
Awesome, Andy!
Thx ... really essential for me, who begins at the age of 40. Great idea Andy ;) ... And one more subscription
Cool! Glad to see an adult picking up music and proving the "I'm too old" myth wrong
im 54 and this is the second time around my first song im working on is Wonderwall lol my instructor chose it for me after i said for a first song Eric Clapton or John Denver barre chords and picking im definately not ready yet strumming so far is the hardest but its sinking in.. my first time my instructor never taught me to play a whole song or correct what i was doing wrong so i quite and sold my guitars .ROCK ON
Benoit Joye cool!
Hey, Andy, I've been learning from you for a month now. Thanks for your lessions, you do it in an easy and slow way from which we can pick it up nicely. Nevertheless, got a one question. We cannot place our required fingers in some or let's say many chords at a time in strings. For ex, in G major, c major, D major, it goes slowly one by one. Is that a problem or we should learn to place fingers at a time? Doesn't it come with a time? If Andy doesn't reply, anyone here can, thanks in advance 🙂
Very helpful video, thanks!
Thank you for the tips, great videos.
My repertoire of songs i pick on default are Party favor, When the Party’s Over, You should see me in a crown, and king of the coulds
First one is totally wrong, sorry, but look at the great funk players or just ask any guitar teacher and you will find that a loose wrist is the goal and not a mistake, your arm should actually be as still as possible
good tips. they make sense! thanks
Super helpful, thanks a million
My guitar is arriving tomorrow and i already know that i wouldve made almost all of these mistakes lol Thankyou so much Andy!
ur fingers are gonna hurt
cherlyn ang Lad i can't even feel the keys on my keyboard lol The three fingers on my left hand are just done in xD
+Steven Travers you only have 3 fingers on your left hand??? that is so sad... maybe you shouldn't try to play any instrument....
I'm just joking, bud. keep up the practice and you will be amazing. remember, practice beats natural ability every time.
p.s. I was completely joking about you only having 3 fingers.
***** but what if I did only have three fingers 😉 I mostly play electric guitar now anyways so even my thumb is getting some action lol I'm doing good (:
+Steven Travers hahaha!! trying to picture that is very enjoyable.
on a similar note, you should check out Jeff Healy. he is a blond guitarist who plays with the guitar laid on his lap. and he is amazing. he won grammys before he died
HAHAHAHAHAHH I just died first two songs that I started learning were The House Of The Rising Sun and Wonderwall.
I can play the fingerstyle House Of The Rising Sun and it sounds actually pretty good ( I started playing guitar about a month ago)
exactly my case lol
put up a video of you playing it
Yeah please upload a video
If you listened to what he said, He didn't say that new players could NOT play them, he said you were not doing yourself any favours by not learning the basics first (and thus easier songs) learning the basics first will help you learn more difficult songs faster and efficiently, I'd like to see someone play snow (hey oh) by RHCP without learning proper picking, alternate picking, chords and chord changes, etc. That's the point he was trying to make.
