Miguel Nieto Chaman Knife Review

- Miguel Nieto Chaman knife, a fixed blade full tang hollow ground knife. Blade steel DIN 1.4116 otherwise known as X50Cr15MoV. The blade has a HRC of 55-57 and I found this absolutely fine, as it really held an edge during all my tests. As the name indicates, the significant alloying elements are Molybdenum and Vanadium. Miguel Nieto also call this steel "Vanadio".
The Chaman knife has a partially rounded spine profile and the designer of this knife, Manuel de la Torre indicates it will damage the baton less whilst splitting wood. It also means you can apply pressure to the spine with the palm of your hand without discomfort from a more acutely angled spine profile.
The thumb/finger spine gimping is perfect for striking a fire steel against.
The Nieto Chaman knife comes in a range of handle options, mine has what Nieto have called KATEX, a proprietary formulation developed by the technical department at Miguel Nieto SL, from a Phenolic fabric composite, which during manufacture, allows the fibres to retain an ordered appearance. hence you will notice that this handle has a "visual depth" to it's appearance.
One side of the hole in the ricasso has been chamfered in order for a fire bow drill to be inserted into it and hence act as the "block". I tried this and found it to work perfectly, allowing the my drill (hazel wood) to spin effortlessly whist applying lots of pressure to the drill. In order to do this you must remove the kit pouch and have the knife sheathed so that the blade is facing away from your body.
I found the fully stitched and riveted full-grain leather carry system to be very nice and practical allowing both vertical and horizontal carry positions. Anyway see what you think.
The Nieto Chaman knife can be purchased here:
www.spainknives.com
and the Nieto Chaman comes in a range of handle scale options and there is also two other models, the BASICO (no pouch just the knife and sheath) and the Kit Plus which includes a rescue folder and more paracord. - Спорт
thanks for the review, I love this mark .
A Great review for a better knife. Regards from Spain.
Hi thanks! and thanks for watching!
spectacular videos, very entertaining and good variety of knives. greetings from Chile!!
Hi to you in Chile! Thanks for watching my videos! Glad you like what you see!
Muy buen cuchillo, uno de los mejores que conozco y que más me gusta , y gran video y gran revisión, con pruebas del cuchillo, bravo 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Many thanks!
Amazing spanish blades
rock n roll brotha man
Yeah man!
Good variety of testing material. I feel like a lot of UA-cam knife reviewers have gotten lazy lately and just do feather curls all the time.
I'm afraid your right but unless I was dead keen on that knife, I wouldn't buy any product from such a test, there are far more tests a knife should be able do other than just feather some wood. I can do that with an archer braodhead LOL! Thanks for watching!
Man , Nieto Knives are real deal , premium performance but less money .
yes there are indeed good value
that's look's A hell of knife and sheath I think these small knives now are becoming a lot more robust and manufactured better all in all dare I say it there as good as the bigger blades .
Yeah, it certainly is a tough little knife and actually it's pretty heavy in the hand and this gives me the feeling of that "robustness" too.
How can i buy it? With full item
Wondetfull knife. I will buy one
Hi thanks for watching!
Cool knife! Is there any chance you could review some great Scandinavian grind knives? Im getting more into bushcraft and I've heard they are a good type
You bet there is! I've had my eye on some very nice carbon blades for a while. The thing is there are too many good Scandinavian blades out there the choice is great. I picked a a great Puuko for just 45 EURO's several years back, deadly sharp and really holds an edge. Let me work on it!
Bush Camping Tools awesome!
in Spain, with size to the USA, Britayn,it is free or with a price of 10 dollars of transport, to your house. The price is 90 dollars. You can buy it, in CUCHILLERIA EL ARTESANO. Good purchase
Better than the M7 or just a different knife?
Just a different knife mate. The M7 is of course much bigger and yes it does have a rounded spine and not hollow ground. I think hollow grinds don't baton as easily as non hollow grinds as simply the blade is thinner in the "wedge" region but then hollow grinds cut better the same materials.
They make beautiful knives but I can't stand hollow grinds, sure wish they would make some full flats, sabers and even try some convex or scandivex blades.
They are changing all of this. I spoke with them last year, they have new equipment and some new models just released have full flat grinds. They look like real winners to me.
Plenty wide and thick but not real long. I like the horizontal mount. The pouch with survival gear would be good for that use. I would not use it for that, so it is easily removed. Excellant. The knife looks good overall.Nice review, as always. You put the knives to the test. Good job not cutting yourself while opening the can. There are quicker ways, but you did it safely. That is what counts. I know. I have cut myself. Is this German steel? I am unfamiliar with it. The bottom of blade looks like it needs a bit of sharpening (4:14).
yeah this model is like a small tank. I think it was poo pooed by many because it was made originally with what many suggest is a low quality SS, eg the 1.4116 alloy, however, whatever they did for their heat treatment, it does indeed hold a good edge. Look at the larger and full flat ground Chaman Macro- I reviewed this knife too BTW.
are they still hollow grind knives or?
This particular model was but after this they started to produce many blades in a full flat grind or a sabre grind in response to what the US market likes. :)
The more I watch this video, the more I love this knife. Not too big, so people don't think you're a psycho who wants to cut their throat, and not too small so you can do some work with it.
LOL! Yes you are certainly right about this. Even once I took my 7inch Spec Plus from Ontario out to cut some onions in mountain hut and the guy next to me really freaked out and had to make some comment about the knife was like way too big for producing in a public hut. I just laughed and said well this is my knife and we are camping and hunting and fishing. But yeah he was a bit taken back. Certainly with a smaller blade like this one you are not going to attract attention like the bigger blades, although these days I rarely take bigger blades where the public (even if camping/hiking) will see them, they are relegated to private land or wilderness areas. If this blade was blackened it would be even less obtrusive too.
Yes, specially I'm from France, and everybody is a bit suspicious because of the terrorist attacks. You can barely have a swiss army knife with you, so you can imagine the panic that can be created by a 20cm blade, even if you're hiking in the mountains, far from any sign of civilization LOL.
It's better to keep the knife inside the backpack. And when you use it, if you show no sign of "madness", people will let you do what you are doing, even the policemen.
Yes I totally agree with you on this. Very rarely these days do I put a knife on my side unless it is in true wilderness. 9/10 I take it in the pack and then no one makes a fuss. People these days are very paranoid re knives. In fact now in Australia it is against the law to carry a Swiss army knife in a pocket knife pouch on your belt, even in rural country areas where people are using knives all the time around farms etc. Very stupid rules. Most stabbings are done by maniacs carrying kitchen knives they have stolen or screwdrivers or chisels, not 200 Buck hunting knives.
Yes also countries like the United Kingdom have crazy knife laws that change all the time and really whether the cops think you're genuine or not regarding carrying a knife in public (they say public is basically everywhere of course even at campsites as there are literally no campsites in the UK unless on private land and the law says this is public) is at their own discretion at present I read from government documents. One reason I do like blackened blades, more for the "covert" non attention seeking standpoint.
Here, swiss army knife or Opinel can be considered as "traditional" then you can have one if you don't use it as a weapon. If you are in the mountains, with you family and make a picnic, no problem. But if you go in a nightclub or at the Eiffel Tower, don't be surprised to be thrown at the ground and be handcuffed LOL
Should i get the chaman or the chaman bushcraft???
They are basically 2 different knives with different steel choices. I think the Bushcraft with 12C27 is a slightly better steel, although since this review they maybe offering the Chaman with N690?- You can check. The Chaman in this video is one tough knife but it is also on the heavy side for it's size as I do not believe the tang is hollowed out/skeletonized. It's made to take a beating. In order to make it good at cutting though, this design needed to have a hollow grind. later models such as the Chaman macro, much bigger- is a sabre flat grind- maybe grind geometry is important to you? The Bushcraft with the curly birch looks like a classic knife, despite not a real functional aspect, the aesthetics are very pleasing to the eye. I think the Bushcraft model has a better grip for resistance to twisting as the profile is slightly more blocky- but v comfortable too. Hope this helps!
@@BushCampingTools so which one do you think is better
i think for more abuse and hard use the Chaman but if you just want a damn good hiking/camping knife you aren't going abuse then the Bushcraft model is the way to go.
@@BushCampingTools but is the steel at the chaman good?
Hi to be honest I think if 1.4116 is treated right then it makes a good knife steel. Certainly from my experience with this knife and others I have with this steel from them, Nieto know what they are doing. There is much snobbery re knife steels but if t works then it's good in my books. The Chaman in this video really held an edge even after abuse of the edge (i couldn't edit in all the footage as it would have been too long) but I really gave it the treatment.
Say Heah Francis, Can I just buy the sheath ?.,,. p
Hi, not sure, you'd have to ask them but I don't see why not.
Say Heah Francis, I also had my Battle Horse Attitude modified. It too L@@Ks similar. I had my Attitude Slightly Curved with a High Scandi Grind and the Drop Point Lowered so I coukd push off with my thumb. I also had White G-10 Handles with Blue Liners . I posted it your welcome to L@@K.,,.p
I'll check it out!
You make me nervous when you try your knives on your nail....
Don't worry, haven't lost a finger yet LOL!
Homeboy has too much Bling for a survival guy.
Too much bling????
I used to have many Muella knives. They were available all over the world. 20-25 years ago. I learned that they cannot be trusted. I am very cautious about Spanish blades. Italian designs are somewhat unusual as well. At any given moment I would trust Russian, Japanese, or American blades. KIzlyar offers great deal: quality and price.
Hi, I currently own 2 very good Muella knives. Did you have a bad experience with them? Did they break or bend? They are popular in my country as the price seems to be just right for the consumer. I have had some problems with Spanish made knives. I think that traditionally they tend to make a vast range of products, with also a vast range of quality, from low end gimmicks to high end Some Italian companies do the same. I'm not sure why they do this and I try and find out which models from which manufacturers are the better products. On saying that I have never come across a manufacturer whose products are all great, as this is definitely an individuals choice thing.
Typically I do not pay attention at grips or sheath. I care about blade. My Muelas did not work well for me. I broke tip on one, just by opening tin can. Next one had grips falling apart. Third one always had dull blade... I don't have MUela for over 20 years... It did not work out for me. Maybe new production is better...
I never found a best knife.... I have custom made knife that works the best for me. It is Madiarich made knife. Kizlyar knifes are pretty good too. For 100 + bucks you are getting good deal.
I really love your videos. They are really informational. It shows basic tasks that knives can perform. Great videos
I'll look up that knife maker. Yes I agree the Kizlyar Supreme knives are good value for money and i like many of their designs. The only 2 Muella's I have are the Kodiak and the Rhino, both are made with Sandvik alloy and both have certainly survived my testing. In fact I put them away for my young son when he gets a bigger boy.
I've had a Cudeman fail on me catastrophically, which I nearly ended up in hospital. After that I never reviewed or bought any of their products again as they gave me some lousy answer as to the reason why. I worked teaching basic metallurgy to uni mech eng students at one point of my career and I do know what micro structures/surfaces look like when there are manufacturing problems. They were not going to have any of that. It was disappointing for me.
Yes it broke quite unexpectedly! I was about to swing it into a small sapling and didn't even hit the wood, it broke as I was swinging it. needless to say it scared the daylights out of me. I reported it and they appeared not interested at all and even said that I was accidentally sent a faulty knife. It was impossible to tell whether the knife was faulty or not when I took it brand new out of the box. And it didn't look faulty either. It was because there was a problem with heat treating and the metal had become glass brittle. That was it for me. If they had acknowledged some problem or even showed some interest in examining the fractured surface (I've looked at many with the scanning electron microscope, then they would be able to adjust/find out where and when possibly the problem took place. They were simply not interested. Of course I never heard back from them either again. That's why I was disappointed.
Say Heah, The blade looks similar to my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162. ,, .
I'm going to check that out.
yeah, sort of are those BM bushcrafter's hollow ground it's a bit hard telling from the images on their website? Or are they flat ground?
Flagging, For a reasonably priced knife, My BM Bushcrafter is one of my Fav. Bush Crafting Knife for what I do, But I have a couple of Fav's, heh heh heh. ,, .
