  • Miguel Nieto SL Viking Knife
    Fixed blade, hollow ground, full tang, drop point, micarta scales, permanently fixed to tang, 4mm thickness. Well stitched leather sheath.
    I gave it a bashing and as usual Nieto knives AN58 held up very well against Australia's hardwoods. The Nieto Viking has an aggressive grip (good with wet hands, although not uncomfortable- gloves will only enhance the feel) and lanyard hole. A good solid blade in a good stainless alloy, fully made in Spain. You can see other handle configurations/options of the Nieto Viking here:
    spainknives.com/en/knives/99-n...
    The Nieto Viking is/was a good solid performer.

    I recently bought the Nieto Viking, I'd be happy to pay a lot more for it. It's a bloody great knife, it is better than knives twice it's price and really tough. It's my new favourite, plus I love the sheath

    Thanks for this helpful review. I bought the "Traveler" model last month, when visiting Spain. This is identical to the "Viking", except that it has smooth olive wood grips. It costs about the same as a typical Chinese import, but is in a totally different class. So far, I am very pleased with it, though I hope to put it to harder tasks in the Scottish Highlands. Confident that it will do well.

    Another good knife from Nieto!. Do you test the Muela jabalí and Muela tanto? and the Muela Kobun, Hornet 14w or Urial?
    Regards!

      Hi, no I haven't tested these models as yet but I believe them to be good knives from other reviews I've seen. I have, as you know tested some other Muela knives. I was very impressed with that brand too when I travelled in Spain and realised that there are so many models but many people outside of Spain just don't seem to know about them.
      Thanks for watching as usual!

    what a little beauty Spanish blades are making one hell of an impact on the market nowadays so well made tough looking and versatile,does it retain it's edge ok will consider buying one in the near future,but with me just buying the SP10 may have to wait while still putting this one through its paces Very impressive thanks for sharing

      Mate, any knife that retains it's edge after working on Eucalyptus wood is good enough for me LOL. Yes it sure did. Yes there are some great Spanish made knives. I've got two from another company put away for my kid (so u know what I think of them- no crap knives any son of mine!).

      LOL! Mate he has his eyes on so many knives! I said when his hands can close over the handles properly he can have them. He's already ear marked the ER ONTOS and keeps telling me his paws fit the handle........no chance LOL! Not yet!

    I recently lost my beloved Nieto Coyote which had been my EDC/all purpose knife for 10+ years. I was about to rush to buy another one but now Im wondering if the Viking might be a wiser option. Id really appreciate anybodys tips regarding this decision. Peace.

      Such a shame, as I'm sure it must have had some good adventures! I think the Viking is pretty close to the Cyote but of course with "less cool" scales. Personally I like wooden scales because it makes a knife look like a knife.

      Yes, it is very easy to use, a good size for most tasks and holds an edge well. Plus the handle is very grippy but also comfortable.

    What is the edge retention of this blade like ?

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  4 роки тому

      Hi, I think that considering what I cut with it over about a total of 2 weeks almost of actually testing it, it wasn't too bad. They say it has a HRC of 58 and it did/was still fairly sharp after all of my cutting of very hard woods, fibrous palm fronds and bashing it about. The only negative- well not really a negative was that the grippy grip is a bit tough on the hands if one is really putting some force into the blade but it is certainly a handy sized knife and good quality for the price.

    Couldnt watch the video till end because of the internet. I got the same knive, and im having problems when it comes to sharpening.. Do you think it has got a convex edge ? Let me know.
    Greetings from Turkey..

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  7 років тому

      Hi, no the edge is a straight bevel. The blade grind is hollow, that is if you were to place a flat ruler along the edge of he blade surface you would see a small curvature there. Just sharpen it as a regular beveled knife edge. I don't think you should put a convex edge on this knife.

    • @kushkafa769
      @kushkafa769 7 років тому

      Im pretty sure that, its not scandi.I think you mean double beveled?
      Double Beveled edge is like kind of scandi but has got another angle near edge right ? I wasnt sure if it was convex or double beveled. I tried it like double beveled, but my results were not good. For example i got different stones, and im always sharpening my opinels, and morakniv's without any problem. But when it comes to mnieto, i cant do it properly. But thanks for your help. So i will try it again like double beveled.

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  7 років тому

      Yes that is what I meant. It will take practice do not give up!. I started sharpening the pen knives of my grandfather at age 9 and worked my way up to fixed blades, I'm not expert, although that was 45 years ago LOL! and sometimes it still takes me time yo get good edges. I'll post something soon on techniques to make it easier to get even edges so stay tuned!

    • @kushkafa769
      @kushkafa769 7 років тому

      Thank you for help :). Yes at the begginning i was too bad too. But the more i sharpen i got the point. At least with scandi's. But this one was not that easy to me. For example with opinels, i can sharpen them well, after cleaning the burr(not sure if its called burr) with a leather belt,i can even shave :). It took a long time. But im new for this kind of edge..
      Again thank you for your response. It was helpful..

      And a last question, do you have any idea what should be the angle between knive and the stone ? Because i couldnt find any datasheet or anything on their website..

    Say Heah Joe, One of my knives I helped design has similar to those Rocky Mountain Track Handle, But my blade is in 3V Cryo Tempered and more of a Woodlore 6"+ and a 1/4" thick and it's pointier than Miguel's Pattern, Oh, it's also a Flat Grind, But similar, Mine alsobjust has one pin. ,, .

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 7 років тому

      Yeah Joe, Copy That. It's not a very wide knife (deep), But it splits like a wedge because at the spine it's a 1/4" thick down to a Zero Grind. I'm watching the Super Bowl Go Patriots, and enjoying a White Sauce Steak Pizza and smoking a Man of War Presidente Cigar with a Diet Coke, Then we're coming home from our regular weekend trip to the cabin. ,, .
