My fav blooper..... I’ve got six of these......... I’ve got five of these....
Mine too! :)
Hey guys regarding the backup, I'm a mac user with 3 different macs in the house. Using iCloud not only keeps all your files safe but extremely portable from desktop to laptop. If not a mac user i believe google drive and dropbox are great alternatives as well. Great Vid Jeff !
Yes. I have a NAS at home, but still zip up the folder at the end of each year and keep the zip offline just in case. :)
Most entertaining teacher on UA-cam.
Haha. Thanks!
First year noob so I need all the info I can get and I learn a ton from your videos!
Thanks! Check out Keith's video so you'll know what to do in case you run into trouble. :)
Lol Jeff.. I was literally sitting here putting pixels into my new medium Boscoyo minis when I saw your post today. Talk about brain wavelengths...hehe. Thanks for posting all your great content!!
Thanks! Yep, it's getting close to showtime! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! :)
Glad to see you made it thru the Summer. Hope you guys are doing well, and surprised your wife hasn't got tired of you working at home and banished you to your work shed. Hopefully the Bevos can get on the top side of the score in Dallas this Saturday. Pete
Thanks Pete! The break in the heat has been welcome. Na, we're not tired of each other. We have fun together. I'm boycotting football this year. Too much off-field drama for me. Cathy keeps me updated tho. lol
@@CanispaterChristmas Sounds like us.... still enjoy each other's company. My sports consumption and interest is way down this year.
Yes. That’s what goes through my head.
😂
Great Video Jeff! Thanks for the update.
OBTW..... that echo on the intro turned out great!
Thanks! Trying to make it sound like I was thinking.... 🤔
Great video. I can't wait to see them set up. Some thing you might want to think about, is before setting them up outside, do a quick wipe down of them with Armor All. That will keep the polymers from breaking down in the plastic and causing it to become brittle and breaking. I do that with everything plastic in my display every year before it goes outside. Keep up the great.
Thanks! I know a lot of James' products has UV protection built-in which should prevent a lot of that and they're only in the elements a month or so each year so it should be minimal. I don't specifically know about the trees, but I'll ask when I talk to him next. Admittedly, I'm fairly new to coro - 2 year-old candy canes so we'll see. Thanks for the tip.
Just getting ready to jump into the world of pixels. Going to diy my house outline this year (hopefully before the snow flies) and then add a prop or two every year!
Yeah, that's a great approach. Good luck with your display!
Glad to see ya back and at it thanks for the information
Thanks Robert!
LOL, Jeff! Love the video, I knew you were talking about me. I'm a Software Engineer and you would think I would know better! Look forward to more Great Videos. Thanks
Haha! Well, just think of it as giving back to the community. 😂
Just got around to watching this video, thanks for all the great content! I wanted to let you know that I have all my show folders in Dropbox and it works great. I switched computers, loaded up Dropbox and Xlights, and just kept going from where I left off. Just don't try and edit the same set of files with two computers at once (although if you are proficient with git you can manage the files that way, the XML files do very nicely in version control)!
Cool! Yeah, it's generally a problem editing the same files from 2 computers. lol
Funny you should post this. I just ordered 6 mini trees in total (2 L, 2 M, 2 S) I believe the small only comes in 360, unless I missed it on website.
Oh! They do have a small! Yeah, that one is 360-only.
Great stuff! Always entertaining.
Thanks! 😂
Jeff, you put the 180 degree tree together backwards. you are supposed to put the cut slits on the inside.
Posted a pic of mine on your facebook page :D
Haha. Yeah, that would look better. Thanks!
I was going to say the same thing. 😂
Already got the next intro planned. 😂
I just put 8 of those together too. I was thinking I had done them wrong.
You did it again.. Slit inside... No slit outside..
😂
I use Dropbox and it works just fine!
Cool! Thanks!
Thank u so much for fibrinogen me a smile
Haha. You're welcome!
Canispater Christmas aka Jeff thx
On using Google Drive.....my show directory is on Google drive. That way I can work on it from home and if I have some downtime at work I can continue there. Seems to work fine.
Excellent! I have a NAS and keep mine there, but I also zip up the directory every year and store it somewhere else just in case. I can't emphasize enough the importance of these files. 😂
Hi ..jeff are you using 12v pixels lights on your big mega tree or 5v v.?
Most of my pixels are 12V. The only 5V is a matrix and the globe in the sign.
Not sure if this was reported already. I'm an Apple user and store my SHOW folder on the Apple iCloud. Can access from any of my Macs as a result and has automatic backup copy in the security of the cloud.
Thanks! Yeah, forgot about that one.
I recommend Onedrive for backup. My entire show resides on my onedrive and runs and backs up to that locationi. I can access it from any system and never have to worry about it. If deleted it still can be recovered.
Excellent!
Thanks for doing the update, I was pulling my hair out a couple days ago until someone pointed out that I had "2 boxes" meaning it was set up for 2 cards.
ONE CARD, ONE BOX. haha! Sorry about that. It worked on mine with 2, but I suppose not everyone's and maybe not on different versions.
I enjoy watch your video, can you help me setup the F16V4 I can't get the output port on the F16V4 it only show port #1 but doesn't show all the other ports. How can I add port #2 to #16 pixel ports? F16V3 shows all 16 ports pixel output. Can you help me?
Thank you
Not sure I follow. You shouldn't need to assign the ports, they are just available for pixels. Are you looking at the DMX output ports by chance?
Hello Mr. Jeff! What layout did you use for the lights on the 180 medium tree, including the star? I can tell I need to start from the bottom, but what about the star?
If you right-click on the model in xLights, choose wiring view, it will show you how it expects it to be wired up (the view is from the back). Do them as 2 separate models. Tree first.
i have a problem i have set up my card correctly to xlights and i can do a matrix test and it shows on my p10 but for some reason cant get anything to play on the p 10 .all the drivers are loaded and working correctly but nothing from schedule i am at alost last thing iv done is try diffrent versions im now back to 6.8 and 6.9 all my dmx lights ect are working on scedule but no p10 cheers
It's been a while since I looked at this and things may have changed a little since then (they usually do). At the time, the plug-in Scott wrote was required to get data to the card from xLights/xSchedule. If the test is working, that may be the problem. The plug-in info is in the previous video ua-cam.com/video/JQerpqt76VU/v-deo.html
Thanks.
Thank you Ron!
Hey Jeff! Looking at a few of those mini trees. I'm not able to find the model for the 180 tree, how did you model it in Xlights? Cheers!
Just use the Christmas Tree default model and adjust the settings to make it work. Same for the stars.
D'oh. I should have thought of that. Cheers!
No worries. I checked to see if James had models for them and he doesn't so those are fine with the standard models. He has some custom models for the weird stuff.
That's fair enough. Forgive me because I'm relatively new to this hobby... if I'm using a strip of 50 pixels, I'm using one string in xLights? It appears as one single line so I must be doing something wrong. As it is, xLights thinks I'm using five channels.
You might benefit from watching Keith's 3-hour xLights training video I have in my Beginner playlist. Strings in xLights generally equates to controller connections. Strands per string is how you can break it up into segments. For example, I have 1200 pixels on my mega tree. 4 strings of 300. 6 strands per string. Looks like 24 strings of 50. Kinda messes with your head a little, but fairly easy once you get the hang of it.
Re-viewing this video... Does anyone have a 'good' (inclusive of the star and able to sequence the star and tree separately) model for the 360 degree mini-tree (medium if possible :-) )
I'm not sure what you're looking for. If you have a coro tree & star from a vendor, there should be a model already in xLights. If not, you can use the built-in tree and star models to create one.
As a noob can I just buy the alphapix 4 and set everything up through that?
I don't know anything about the AP other than what it is, but I wouldn't suggest trying to run pixels without some knowledge of how they work as you will likely run into problems no matter what you use.
@@CanispaterChristmas for sure. I think I'll start really small and work my way up. Thank you!
can a display using a raspberry pie be done with a computer and no network
Not sure I totally understand your question, but there are Pi "hats" or "caps" you can attach that drive a small number of pixels so the Pi + hat/cap would run your lights with no network connections though you might want to enable WiFi so you could control it and so that the Pi could reach out to the internet to fetch the current time for the scheduler. What are you trying to do? Low startup costs or no knowledge of computer networking/electronics? 😂
If you are starting small you might look at the Beagle Bone based controllers as they have much more potential capacity than Pi based. You could run stand alone, but as Jeff suggests having WiFi to control remotely is a good enhancement.
Buy a 360 tree, and an extra star, cut the tree in half.... now you have 2 cheaper than 2 individually
Haha. Still need 2 backplates tho.
Can you show me where I can buy Megatree?
It a DIY project. I don't know of anyone that sells them since everyone's tastes are different. There may be some kits out by now, but most people build their own.
Anybody else feel like you put your pixels in the wrong way on your mini trees? LOL
Yes. Check the comments. lol!
