Detention is dare I say, the most unique game I've ever played. Simply put, it's a 2D side-scrolling 'point and click' horror game. And it's fantastic.
Set during 1960's Taiwan under martial law, you play as protagonists Wei and Ray (Predominantly Ray though), who are trapped in their high school during a typhoon alert.
Exploring the school you discover it's haunted, and end up learning of it's dark history.
Amazing atmosphere.
Excellent graphics and art design.
Superb music and sound.
Integrates religious elements based on Taiwanese/Chinese culture and mythology.
An intense and tragic story.
This is a game I will not be forgetting anytime soon ...

For those who are unfamiliar with our(Taiwanese Taoist) culture
I’ll explain here
HeiBai Wuchang（黑白無常）- these deities are sort of like the grim reaper, their job is to take people after death to hell.
Legend says that both deities originate from Yuan Dynasty China, both of them were great friends. One day they were going to work, but a typhoon or hurricane struck the place where they were living, Mr. Bai said to Hei that he will go back home and take umbrella with him and told Hei to wait for him, but Bai failed to come back in time and Hei was washed away and drowned. Suffered with his own guilt Bai committed suicide. The Yanrou/Yama( God of hell閻羅) was saddened by their story and decided to turn both of them gods of death.
Deity Chen Huang（城煌爺）- The "another" god of death. He is the one in charge of the entrance to hell.
Spirit money（金紙）: Special ritual props used in praying. For us, these are the money used by the deads, and we deliver it to them as a gratitude by burning these papers.
Old Woman- When you die in the game, you actually go back to the entrance of the school, the old woman you see there is actually a deity named MomPou（孟婆）. Her job is pretty interesting. See, In Taosim and Buddhism, every person goes to hell after death, the Judge and the God of Hell determines which person goes to heaven, reborn in the present life, or suffer in hell. For those who will reborn in the present world, first they will have to cross a bridge called NaiHe Chau（奈何橋）, in the end is a gate to the present world. MomPou stands in front of the gate, what she does is she hand over to the souls a drink or soup of some sort, and the soup will erase one’s memory from his or her former life, in order to let the souls can be reborn completely.
I would also like to mention, compared to the 9 levels of hell stated in the Divine Comedy(or 18 levels based on your culture), there are 10 levels or “palaces” in the underworld in Taoist culture. All leaders from the 10 palaces are early dynasty famous generals or scholars. The Yama(閻羅）is said to be Justice Bao(包青天）from Song Dynasty. The naihe bridge is located in the tenth palace, also is where the Wheel of Destiny/Nirvana, is located. The first palace and the tenth palace contains no actual punishment “equipments”, all malevolent souls will be distributed to 2nd to 9th palace. So, a typical procedure would be:
1. Soul gets taken after death to palace 1 by HeiBai Wuchang
2. Soul get his judgement by palace leader and is shown the reflection of his or her previous life, the deeds, crimes, the good etc.
3. Soul goes to a magical cliff to see his or her parents and family in Earth for the last time.
4. Souls gets distributed to different palaces to suffer based on their crimes.
5. After punishment is finished, soul get transported to tenth palace and the wheel will decide the next life in present world. People with good deeds and outweigh the crimes get reborn and depending on the deeds, the souls gets financial benefits, born wealthy, or basically good life. Those rare people who go by the rules of “10 Precepts” stay in paradise forever, and those who committed “10 evils” rot in hell for eternity. Those “10 Precepts” in my opinion is pretty much impossible to achieve in modern life and you must have some serious self discipline or being a fucking psycho to be able to achieve that.
Incense sticks- Sticks range from 60cm to 30 cm, props used in praying.
Edit: Fun fact, incense sticks are always offered in an upward position(burning point on top), sticking the stick upside down(burning point buried in ash) is considered serious disrespect to gods and can lead to SERIOUS unfortunate consequences.
The piano song played in the school radio is called 雨夜花, or flower in the rainy night. This piece is actually forbidden during the 60s since it contains sensitive words in its lyrics,all 4 songs played in chapter 3 are forbid by the law.
Edit: The lines and music played by the tape recorder in 27:30 is a normal 60s~80s morning exercise song, every students from elementary to high school are required to exercise with this song in the morning ceremony, generally held in Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The song in particular is a very early version of the exercise tune. The dance/fitness moves looks very basic and stiff compared to today’s exercise songs for children, and believe it or not this tradition still holds today. I remember I have to do these type of fitness songs every morning ceremony and PE class in elementary and high school.
The next track with the women speaking in Taiwanese is just an average time announcement for audiences. What is interesting is that in this clip, the broadcaster speaks in “Now is Central time……….Period.”
(These Taiwanese phrases and sentences are really hard to translate to English without leaving out the details, so anyone interested do look it up online)
This particular is a very early style of time announcement dating back to WW2 and when General Jiang ZhongZheng(蔣中正）first “escaped” to Taiwan. I have never heard any time announcement nowadays speak in that particular format, and even in today’s old-fashioned Taiwanese A.M. radio stations who also speak in Taiwanese doesn’t speak like that anymore. This is very interesting to see how many old-era relics does this game has that resonates with Taiwanese people. Even though I wasn’t born in that era, I still lament of all these people suffered in the White terror era and hope those who got executed fighting for free will may truly find peace.
We Chinese people feel different kind of horror in the game than the people in the west. Based on a variety of youtubers I’ve watched I say people in the west mainly experience horror with the dark, gritty tone, the monsters, gore, and the sudden jumpscares . The Power drill massacre video Gstar made has proven my point. Asian people(mainly from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong) feel horror by the familiarity of the environment. These are the gods we pray and suddenly presented in a demonic way. The music fits perfectly with the game by feeling familiar to us but in a creepy way. There are a lot of schools in Taiwan today that looks just like the school in the game, and Ray’s condo is a typical house people lived in 30 years ago.

The tree with the faces in the broadcasting room reminds me of the Living Forest trees from Mortal Kombat. And the hooded man at 7:37 kind of looks like Dr. Salvador from Resident Evil 4.
