My Oscar "Mr. Nibbles" has quickly become on of my favorites in the fish room. Great personality and very interactive. He is messy which I perpetuate by adding floating stem plants. He spends most of the day tucked into the plants waiting on food "or my hand" to hit the water.

My mom had an Oscar that refused to die! Despite several instances of hole-in-the-head, and house-sitters who over fed, under fed, and lapsed with water changes when she traveled, she always came home to find him still swimming around! He finally died at 18 or 19 years of age. He was huge, probably about 14" long, and hilariously picky about the decorations in his tank. There was one little flower pot he absolutely HATED, and would always bury with gravel every time my mom dug it out and repositioned it. His best bud was a large common pleco... he'd let the pleco come and "groom" his sides and float aimlessly adrift while he enjoyed his massage. My mom lasted less than a year before getting a new one because they are such entertaining roommates! The new one is doing very well and has a beautiful smooth face; no hole-in-the-head! He also does the thing with his pleco pal, now, though it took him a while to decide they could be friends.

@@sarahshay4212 ask if you can get a 2.5 gallon. They're really small and you can still have a filter and a heater and that's the limit anyway (depending on where you live). And explain to her the health problems the fish can have if they don't have these things. I explained to my mom that it's like making her live in her closet her whole life. Yes she can live, but it's not a quality life. She's going to get board, restless, she's going to develop health issues. Same with a Betta. Bettas like space. Bettas can jump out if they feel too confined. They can developed fin rot, ich, and other desieses that in the long run becomes more expensive than just getting the minimum of what they need.

In my first fishkeeping years I had two little tiny Oscars in a ten gal tank. No internet then mind you. Then I had two in a 20 , two in a 40, then went right to 75. I loved them. They would sulk and drape themselves over rocks and play dead if their food was late. They would rub on my arms when I was sticking the plastic plants back in. I took a serial murdering electric blue African cichlid about an inch long and threw him into their tank. He'd killed everything in a 55 tank over a weekend when we were gone. It was either that or burial by sea. The huge Oscars never ate him! They grew, he grew but they never ate him. He was, however, exceedingly polite.

I've got 3 Oscar's that I've had for 2 years now, one got beat up pretty bad and I've had to separate, the other two have laid eggs many times but only had baby fish twice
Got a pleco with a larger tank from a neighbour and he tends to "graze" on the Oscar's from time to time, I'd love to separate but I don't have the space, they are fine most of the time, think the pleco just likes to be a bit bossy (I think he's a shovelnose as I saw one in the pet shop that looked the same as him)
I didn't know what I was getting, I wasn't told at the store when I got them what they would turn out to be and yes they decorate how they want and make me do water changes all time but there great fish and as my first fish I feel I've done quite well with them
If anyone wants to see them my instagram is the same as my UA-cam (couzanit)

    • @naerwyn239
      @naerwyn239 6 років тому

Your pleco should not be housed with the oscars if you've seen him "grazing" on the oscars. This means that the pleco is hungry, and eating the slime coat of your oscars. You may come home one day to find an oscar dead, with a hole eaten into it. Find someone to give the pleco to, or find another tank. :( Sorry for your bad experience with the pet store.

So glad you made this video! I keep nodding my head in agreement with everything. So many don’t realize that that cute little Oscar chasing your fingers on the glass at the pet store will get big and fast! I have my 2 knuckleheads in a 125G filtered with TWO FX6’s. I still do water changes regularly because, like you said, they are messy. I love my babies. Man, you hit the nail on the head with everything in this video right down to them changing colors with their moods.

Going back a bit to your backstory video, I guess you and oscars in general kinda have something in common, your both kind of misunderstood and mistreated. But it ended up very well for you and CH. great video, have a great day

Have you ever bred Oscars? The Oscar is by far my favorite fish. Many years ago (when I used to breed bettas) I had an Oscar in a 100 gallon tank. His name was Grumpy. He would get upset when my male friends came over to visit but would get very happy when the girls showed up!
I had him for about 11 years when he decided to go to that big pond in the sky!

I have had two oscars one that died from hole in the head one that’s still alive. The one that died would let me pet him and it grew to about 13 inches in 5 years. It was the first big fish i’ve owned and is still one of my favorites

Idea for you. Have an online realtime camera on Frank. And make a small corner section of that in all videos. You probably get less complaints. ;)

So cool to finally see you with an Oscar. It’s the fish I’ve been keeping since I started in the hobby back in 1995. Greatest fish in the hobby if you can provide the proper conditions!

Interesting.I m not a Oscar keeper. But I love species profiles just to learn about other fish species and why people love them.
Thanks again for another great teaching video Joey.I now kind of understand why you love Oscars.

I had 2 red Oscars for many years and they were like a couple of little dogs to me because they were so intelligent and friendly. I could handle them and they enjoyed it. They used to love bulldozing all the gravel in the tank from one end to the other. Sometimes when they were naughty they would smash the tank lights .
I ended up with 16 tanks with many different species just like yourself. I love your red discuss also and appreciate all your work and vids mate.
    Take care.😆
    Regards. ....Kingi
