Cold Start of a 1983 Nissan Datsun diesel pickup in 22 degree weather. Engine: SD25 - 70hp This video was produced for the 2016 IDParts.com cold start contest.
I love the sound of a diesel engine. It's a shame that Nissan discontinued the diesel vehicle when they did. It may not be for everyone, but I believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
@@ClassicTVMan1981X Why they were never a good seller here in the USA is beyond me. Even then, you had Mercedes-Benz Diesel and you had Volkswagen Diesel. So there should've been no reason to not offer a Toyota Diesel, an Isuzu Diesel, or a Mitsubishi Diesel, or Datsun (Nissan) Diesel.
That is the clearest sounding audio for a cold start video I've ever heard. Having that professional microphone over the engine really made a huge difference. Great video!
Thanks Adam! We were fortunate to have one on hand. I made sure to edit all the sound files so you are hearing that mic on the engine every time it turns over.
shouldn't need to Give it throttle to start it. its a Diesel. if its not hot enough to burn a small amount of fuel that Cools the cylinder why add more Liquid that will cool the cylinder even further. and make the mixture non combustible.
2:20 Don't pump the pedal, just floor it until it starts to start, and ease off keeping it a tad above idle, don't do the "UA-cam" high-rev cold start. Also, glow it for 30+ seconds.
Jezus, why does a person with a heavy Autism trying to Start a nice and antique car?? Jezus get out of this video and let it happen by people that know more about these things btw: 15-30 Seconds is too much, 3-5 seconds is too less, hold betweem 5 and 10 sec, if it won't run hold it for max 5 seconds and that will make it easier to start, also its healthier for the starter
Sounds ok and "is" ok are two different things. Not being rude but it needs to be held longer. That or get a higher amp switch, (like the 7.3 powerstroke, it comes with a 30 amp switch, a lot of people install a 100 amp switch. starts first time everytime that way.)
Omg. DIESEL ENGINES THAT HAVE GLOW PLUGS ARE MADE TO GET THEM HOT, THEN CRANK! That's the simple answer. Barely holding them before cranking will NOT usually work and diesel starters are expensive, since they're working more than twice as hard as a normal starter would for the same size gasoline engine... You know nothing about diesel engines. I'm not wasting my time here.
Loud and clear understandable here in the Netherlands!! Always wanted to know this 1983 Datsun would cold start. And always make sure to glow these glow plugs for at least 20 sec, especially when cold; one attempt, starts immediately.
welcome to the club guys lol I happen to own one of these trucks myself I had it 11 years and its grown on me becoming my baby check it out if you like ua-cam.com/video/l2xXRDBKNy8/v-deo.html
I current own the very 1st SD-25 diesel engine out of my late father's 1983 Datsun/Nissan diesel King cab truck. Dad's truck was the #52 truck out of the Smyrna Tenn Plant and the very 1st SD-25.(Authenticated By Nissan) Although the truck itself was scrapped long ago, I kept the motor and Transmission. I fully overhauled the motor at 609000 miles and with it's matching 5 speed transmission, is in a 2003 Ford Ranger Ext Cab XLT. I have put 180000 on the engine since the overhaul. No Problems yet. BTW Dad's Truck had the exact same paint job as this truck does. Interior was identical. Let me know if you ever want to sell it. I loved that truck
Now that's an impressive truck! I can't believe it's available with a diesel in the US. By the way, that's a good sounding diesel. I just like the way diesels sound. Your brother sure got a rare car. Tell him that I think it's a cool truck.
Thank you - it was originally my grandfather's bought brand new on the west coast. I'm in the process of fixing her up. You find out how rare they are when you start looking fur parts.
+Wes Clark By the way, quick question. I saw that the instructions say that you can't hold the glow plug button for more than 5 seconds. I've looked up other Nissan Datsun cold start videos, and they glow them for much longer.
Quick history; This truck was bought new by my grandparents and passed along to me. While 99.9% original down to the wipers, a few 'modifications' were made as things broke over the years. The glow plug bypass is one of them. I have no idea who wrote those instructions or why. I have definitely held the button for longer on cold days.
we had an international scout with the bigger cousin of this motor, the Turbo SD-33... I think all of 110 Horsepower... we used to hold our glowplugs for 30 seconds and kick it over..
THIS! I swapped a turbo scout SD-33 into my CJ, on very cold days I would hold it for a minute. www.fourwheeler.com/project-vehicles/154-0805-1978-jeep-cj7-yj-tj/
Thanks! Will is currently rebuilding an engine for an Audi A6 wagon. The most complicated thing he had ever previously done to a vehicle was to add a trailer hitch to a VW Golf. I vote for a 'first crank' video next after he's done.
Newcumpas1 what's happening if he pump pedal, does it have something to do with the electronic fuel injection? Are you supposed to pump only carburettor engines or, it have something to do with indirect fuel injection like in this case?
Данило Ђорђевић If he holds the pedal down and keep it there, the injectionpump will deliver more fuel and the rpm will be higher than the idle is set to once the engine has started, thats true sir, but a pumping movement on the pedal whon't build up any extra fuel like it does on carburators on some gasoline engines.
Never let an idiot start your truck. Nice little truck. The auto glow system may work better. It often glows system and after glows system with ruck running for better starts and less smoke
This! My only regret was not having like 10 different thermometers to prove it was cold. Lesson learned. It can get cold here in North Carolina but still not snow. Very typical in the Piedmont region.
Had an '84 King Cab, also with the SD25 diesel, back in the day here in Manitoba, Canada. Once on a cold January night, had to start it while -35C outside (around -30F), after being parked for over a day on the street. Took a couple of minutes before it was finally running on all 4 cylinders. I've never seen so much smoke out of an exhaust pipe. Traffic couldn't see through it. Great engine though.
My uncle had a petrol version and I remember the choke lever (can still be seen here). I was a child and that feature was interesting. Someone had to explain to me what it does, in simple language.
A choke does exactly what the word says, it chokes the engine, the choke restricts air to the engine so the air/fuel mixture becomes richer (more fuel).
Wow.. Thats not even cold haha, i got a 190D Mercedes, stood locked up in a shed (cold) for almost 3 years, no battery charger or anything, glow plug 5 sec, and then started right up, and that was when it was almost -14F / -26 C. Same goes for our Volvo's ( Gas )

Engines like these are treated more fairly if you allow the glow plug warning light to disappear before you turn the ignition key the rest of the way.

the sd25 though was a bit underpowered

Clearly you don't know how to start an indirect injection diesel engine
his profile picture explains why
lol Good Point!
What is he doing it wrong, except the fact that he is only turning on glow plugs for only a few seconds,
An sd25 is direct inj.
Wait for the glow plug warning light to go out before you turn the key the rest of the way.
I lost it at "Why are my wipers on?" LOL Great video guys

If you have self regulating plugs
WHY'RE MY WIPERS ON?
you need more subs
I've never seen anybody make such a fuss over starting an engine lol.
They even made a family thing out of it 3:19. Just keep the button down a bit longer, 3 seconds are too short for the glow plugs to heat up.

3 seconds is an awfully short time for glow plugs. It's usually 15 - 30 seconds, and it may have started easier that way. Well done video, anyway.
+themaritimeman I said the same thing - HOLD THE GLOW PLUGS LONGER!!! :p

Hold pedal down, slowly release when it fires up, hold RPM above idle, what is referred to as a high idle ...
