This game doesn't even offer terraforming? Sim City 2000 has that feature; and also I can build bigger cities in that game than in this one. Man, the limitations in this game compared to previous titles is unacceptable.
Wow - 4 years old huh? I recall being supremely annoyed with this game on launch - couldn't get online, numerous bugs and the worst problem of all - disappearing cities. I abandoned this game fairly quickly. I wonder if they'll ever bring it back, and if they do, I wonder if their opening trailer will have, in blazing letters: "WILL NOT REQUIRE ONLINE". I also hope they re-vamp their entire engine - the cities were small due to constraints with the underlying programming and AI.
I can say, having almost 100 hours in the game, it's a mixed bag. The fixes have helped make the game become more stable but it's quite obvious that the game was abandoned by EA and (pre-closure) Maxis after their first DLC was released. I think it's a good "town simulator" if you work at a slow pace and I would argue it's on the same level visually as Cities: Skylines vanilla. It's very much like the vanilla Sims 4; except with ZERO support. It could have been more.
The answer you seek is in what you've posted. Because there are so many complex simulations running (instead of represenations), it's too expensive on the system. I imagine that SimCity 6, with a refined engine & newer hardware, will have much bigger cities.
your outputting your waist water in the middle of the radiated area, put your waist water outflow next to your filtered water pump, or your water treatment plant next to your normal water pump, and you re-hydrate the land where your pump is its not a bug its a feature
Great look. Ive been really wanting this game since the beta came out and I was wondering if the 80 bucks for the deluxe edition would be worth it, now I know that's really not the case. So thank you so much for posting this. I hope that EA will implement bigger cities, fix some of the bugs with this game and lower some of the prices on the older games so I can try them. Oh by the way, they have two flash fb sims games and they also use the "reticulating spines" joke.
The game forces you to move up not out - in tho video they have no parks - you need parks and plazas to move your buildings up in density which will make your buildings even taller - it's all in the strategy
I suspect the reason for the small cities is primarily due to the large files of bigger cities. The files needed to make online game play would be just too big to send back and forth over the average internet connection. I suspect that if you were a big fan of the old games and loved making the biggest cities you could, this incarnation may leave you a bit wanting. It would be nice if Maxis made an offline version with bigger cities butted up next to each other like #4 just for us old timers.
I'm not colourblind but those modes don't look so great to me. They could easily fix it by making each zone outline a pattern instead of a colour. Bubbles for residential, tiled squares for commercial, hazard stripes for Industrial. That way there would be no mistaking them, colours or no colours.
I have to say that the once thing that Simcity does better than Cities XL is that it's actually fun to play. Cities XL technically has all the things you'd want in a city sim game, but it's just a nightmare to play, at least thats my experience
I REALLY wish theyd make a simcity for the xbox or playstation because then you can have way bigger cities and it would just be a lot more fun and accessible
Wait till a crack is released. That's what I'm going to do. Hell, I think I'll check if one is released though it's a bit early. Then you don't ever need to worry about losing signal.
They STILL don't have cheetah speed back yet, I can fill up a city with high rises and be "done" with it in 4 hours on Llama speed, can't imagine how purposeless this game will feel with Cheetah.
man before this vid the only thing superior to cities xl the new sim city had was its performance, but seeing as how the game lags at a small map with a measly 250k pop, I just dont know if the new sim city is even worth buying at this point
I always thought SC4 was too complicated, I get the need to simplify the gameplay a bit but the size of the cities is just ridiculous. I didn't think that before but now I see it...sigh, I'll still try it out sometime.
I don't even understand how they could fuck this up so badly. It'll probably be a great game in a year when they fix the problems, but holy shit I'll just wait for the price to go down and for them to fix things that fundamentally make SimCity enjoyable.
Can I ask a slightly offtopic question? Why is the UA-cam video link on your site marked 'members only' when non-members can just type the video title into UA-cam and get it that way?
The thing is, Will Wright, The creator of the sims and simcity, quit EA. Which is why, after this, all of his award-winning games went to the shit. Spore for example, had some huge potential, and it was dumped in a trash can and pissed upon.
He's saying its a great game, but EA did make it a way worse game than the newest simcity should have been. Simcity 4 was a great game, the new simcity should have been at least as good. But its missing some of the great things of that game.
I used to love SimCity back in the day. This one was a mess though, on a few different levels. Thankfully i have Cities:Skylines to wash the bad taste out of my mouth.
Of course it could be. But if they didn't fix these bugs in BETA you really think they will fix them post release? If we're lucky Maxis will find a new publisher for their next simcity, but this one is dead in the water.
The devs have been really supportive of modding, but I don't know if EA will want people to download stuff for free when they can sell it for a profit.
I don't mind too much the DRM (I mean it sucks no doubt and in no way benefits the consumer) but if the game was awesome, I'd play it regardless of the DRM. There's other stuff that bothers me - the small city size, the almost insistence on MP, the way there seems to be one 'correct' way to lay out your city if you want it to be efficient, so if you want to be at all creative with your city layout, it will screw you over. I'll keep watching vids, but for now I don't think I can justify the price
PC Gamers: We already own that game it's called sc4 with NAM mods, it was just on steam sale. EA: But you won't have to mod this one, in fact you can't... PC Gamers: Good luck with that...
Well Cities Xl is more of a rip off of sim city. Some other reasons are the people in your city have no detail they're just flat blobs walking around if you zoom in, the game is to me way to easy, and my computer has 8 gigs of RAM but Cities XL still lags when you get a big city.
Yep. That's the one thing that no one can gripe about, I think. It's a gorgeous and cute little game. While I was watching this video, I thought to myself just how attractive this game is, and how fucking dirty I feel for wanting this game, knowing that it most likely doesn't benefit ANYBODY associated with the old Sims franchise, and will just line EA's (and that clueless executive producer bitch's) pockets.
Actually it will play on iOS. by "spring" apparently But why the hell are they taking so long. They've already said it will be the SAME game. so..... we get to wait until the servers work good or.... it's getting truly annoying. I had really big hopes for this game
Which implies that there's no demand and therefore market for games as they used to be. Is that really the case these days? Thank god for the indie crowd.
Yeah I am really not a fan of EA games. Also they seem to be a bit more expensive for what you get. I haven't even bothered with Origin because I fully support Valve and Steam instead.
I’ll never forget you Ryan Davis.
We all miss you so much.
My fucking man! I will never forget Ryan Davis. He was a great treasure :D
Jeff, Ryan & Vinny...QUICK LOOK DREAM TEAM ASSEMBLED!!!
"if they have launch day issues you will be keenly aware of it."
- Jeff Gerstmann, videogame prophet.
RIP Ryan Davis. :(

Thank you merchant for decreasing city size. I never needed big maps and if I do, I am glad to know you are there to sell me a bigger format.
Always expect Jeff to do something wrong with his nuclear power plant.
The answer you seek is in what you've posted. Because there are so many complex simulations running (instead of represenations), it's too expensive on the system. I imagine that SimCity 6, with a refined engine & newer hardware, will have much bigger cities.
looks sooooooooo good! might bring back my sims addiction
6 years later and so many games now require an online connection and unfortunately little fuss is made about it
This is the most technical quick look ive seen in a while Giantbomb. This game looks kind of complicated
I'm sure the city area I had in the beta was bigger than this, but I guess they might have changed it or something
Lol 'Brodyquest for 10 hours' bookmarked. Jeff has his priorities in the right place!
your outputting your waist water in the middle of the radiated area, put your waist water outflow next to your filtered water pump, or your water treatment plant next to your normal water pump, and you re-hydrate the land where your pump is
its not a bug its a feature
What little excitement I had left about this game is now dead, buried, and pissed on.
Great look. Ive been really wanting this game since the beta came out and I was wondering if the 80 bucks for the deluxe edition would be worth it, now I know that's really not the case. @0:14:10 it's like that because you have an intersection right on the highway entrance. meaning there's traffic lights there. red ones.
when Giant Bomb do it people sure do!
@LarsFalgren because if you haven't noticed cities haven't been saving
I have to say that the once thing that Simcity does better than Cities XL is that it's actually fun to play. Cities XL technically has all the things you'd want in a city sim game, but it's just a nightmare to play, at least thats my experience
I REALLY wish theyd make a simcity for the xbox or playstation because then you can have way bigger cities and it would just be a lot more fun and accessible
Simcity 2000 was not a complicated game. This is not a dumbed down simcity, this is a DLC'd up Simcity.
This is most certainly not my grandfather's SimCity.

Okay, I'm going to play Cities XL some more i guess.
i heard city spaces are very small really small. are they?
I always thought SC4 was too complicated, I get the need to simplify the gameplay a bit but the size of the cities is just ridiculous. I didn't think that before but now I see it...sigh, I'll still try it out sometime.
So they nailed predicting the server launch problem.
I loved seeing the population go down as everyone was turned into a zombie
TotalBiscuit has a video o the "error 37" of this game and cloud saving doest really save your city to a cloud.
I don't even understand how they could fuck this up so badly.
It'll probably be a great game in a year when they fix the problems, but holy shit I'll just wait for the price to go down and for them to fix things that fundamentally make SimCity enjoyable.
Phenomenal virtual city, iddy biddy living space!!!
I really wish I had seen this video before I bought the game.
I really don't understand how Maxis can just COMPLETELY ignore his simcity fans and make the farthest thing from a good simcity game.
Can I ask a slightly offtopic question? Why is the UA-cam video link on your site marked 'members only' when non-members can just type the video title into UA-cam and get it that way?
:/.. i'm just going to go by Sim City 4
Roads? Where we're going,we don't need roads.
The thing is, Will Wright, The creator of the sims and simcity, quit EA. Which is why, after this, all of his award-winning games went to the shit. Spore for example, had some huge potential, and it was dumped in a trash can and pissed upon.
Welcome to democity
Yes. It's on Steam.
RIP Simcity

You mean you can expand the city outside that little box?
wow....
I mean, this Sim City has a lot of interesting Ideas (Multiplayer regions and the like) but the small cities man...They just fuckin kill it
So how would you increase max city size?
This launch was an unmitigated disaster wrought upon the hardworking people at Maxis by the greedy corporate overlords over at Electronic Assholes...
yeah, it looks unpolished right?
is it gonna come out for MAC?
No. The cities would be even smaller and it would be impossible to play because of the lack of buttons on a controller.
Surely they plan to sell an expansion later where you can have bigger cities.
why would they make such small zones?! I don't understand
Elasti City? pretty clever GameSpot02.
They will get bigger with an update.
water pumping station next to purification plant = infinite water
I really hope the civitas guys are onto something.
Mmm. That radiated industrial area...
build a water filter instaletion near a waste dump.. and it cleans it out.. so u got water for months! even years
it pollutes the ground. not exactly managing pollution.
Wow this looks really good. Let me just install it on my PC and.......GOD DAMMIT!
I used to love SimCity back in the day. This one was a mess though, on a few different levels. Thankfully i have Cities:Skylines to wash the bad taste out of my mouth.
What dissappoints me, is that it looks more like SimTown. Not SimCity.
Simcity needs a lot of drastic changes, proper region sizes, cheaper roads...
Of course it could be. But if they didn't fix these bugs in BETA you really think they will fix them post release? If we're lucky Maxis will find a new publisher for their next simcity, but this one is dead in the water.
SquareBob city?
The devs have been really supportive of modding, but I don't know if EA will want people to download stuff for free when they can sell it for a profit.
Welcome to SimNeighborhood
There will be mods, so I would imagine you will be able to sprawl after a while.
There is a reason none of the schools are full. The high school is closed because there is no water there.....
Yeah I don't really recommend buying the new Sim City.
welcome to giant bomb
I have Cities XL but haven't played this new Sim City. But from what I've heard and seen, Cities XL > Sim City
i play it myself and its much worse than the impression one gets here. im back to cities xl now. enough simtown for me.
"hey if they can keep the servers up and running..."
Well i was gonna buy this game. But things being so small, i would rather get something else.
So excited
PC Gamers: We already own that game it's called sc4 with NAM mods, it was just on steam sale.
EA: But you won't have to mod this one, in fact you can't...
PC Gamers: Good luck with that...
I think he's missing the grade school step?
did u just make tristram... silence... d2 joke hahahahahha i got it
it looks soo goodddd

This dumbing down of complex lineages makes me feel like modern games are lacking. I don't know, it's just a feeling I get.
Actually it will play on iOS. by "spring" apparently But why the hell are they taking so long. They've already said it will be the SAME game. so..... we get to wait until the servers work good or.... it's getting truly annoying. I had really big hopes for this game
There's a mod to build outside the coty
Which implies that there's no demand and therefore market for games as they used to be. Is that really the case these days? Thank god for the indie crowd.
Unless you're into that sort of thing... : )
R.I.P. Headphone users(And i mean at the beginning.
Who? :?
Yeah I am really not a fan of EA games. Also they seem to be a bit more expensive for what you get. I haven't even bothered with Origin because I fully support Valve and Steam instead.
It should be more like Cities Xl u almost never un out of space in that game.
YOU GUYS the game doesn't even need the always online connection! a modder found out how to play offline, tHE CITIES DON'T EVEN NEED THE CONNECTION!
may be a prak could help !!
I repeatedly spawn the giant lizard to manage garbage and pollution. Kinda a bullshit strategy.
