The skill level was extraordinary. I was lucky to see this team many times as a kid. Love the story about Paul Madeley signing a new contract without any of the terms filled in. Said he only wanted to play for Leeds, they could fill in the rest. Interestingly he later became a very rich man outside football.
They had flair, steel, incredible will to win and team spirit in shed loads. I agree about the comments about total professionalism - ahead of their time. Bad luck, bent refs and going deep every year in so many competitions stopped them from lifting more cups.
I always thought the team Revie built was as good as anything in Engliah football over the last 50 years. possibly only the goalkeeping position was the slight weak link

One of the best and competitive games I ever saw was a home defeat for my team Everton in a FA Cup 4th round reply in January 1965 at Goodison Park. After a 1-1 draw at Leeds on the day of Winston Churchill's funeral. I was confident about the replay. But to two sides packed with internationals played a fiercely fought game until late in the second half when Jack Charlton scored, followed quickly by a breakaway goal from Don Weston. Fred Pickering replied straight away. And with minutes left Alex Scott was flattened in the penalty area and Ref Kevin Howley refused to award a penalty. The gate was in excess of 66,000 that night and the clash between Bobby Collins and Dennis Stevens was two great midfield players. Everton won the FA Cup the next year. Though the late 1960s Leeds team were outstanding, and should have won more trophy's.

04:00 not well known fact, Don Revie signed Trevor Francis for Leeds before the start of the 74/75 season. When Brian Clough took over he didn't rate Francis and cancelled the deal. A few years later Clough realised his mistake and signed Francis for Forest

There was this never ending hatred of the great Leeds team ,dirty Leeds dirty Leeds. I think between 64 to 70 there was more than some truth to it . But 70 to 75 they played some great great football. Hard but gifted . Every team had hard men back then . Liverpools Tommy Smith was an animal .just ask Geoff Nulty. Chelsea had Ron Harris . Man Utd had Nobby Stiles ,they were like minders that allowed the great players to play. You get booked these days for tackling as all the foreign players roll around like gymnasts .

Compare them to Clough's Derby and Forest, both of whom played superb football, and were immensely popular. Clough made a mistake going to Leeds, but the Leeds players made an even bigger mistake by not accepting him. It was their loss.

Revie's Leeds teams were crammed with top qualty players, yet they were so detested by the neutrals, of which I am one. It could have been so different, but Revie made them into a bunch of thugs. Compare them to Clough's Derby and Forest, both of whom played superb football, and were immensely popular. Clough made a mistake going to Leeds, but the Leeds players made an even bigger mistake by not accepting him. It was their loss.

They were great but you have to admit they were dirty and knew every trick going they moaned and groaned at the ref even if they were in the wrong and they left the boot in used studs and their disciplinary record shows that do a degree but they got away with a lot
they were consistent yes , consistent at falling at the final hurdle far too many times , they lost far more titles by finishing runners up, than they actually won , they lost three out of four fa cup finals they appeared in , and lost in two major european finals , a great side yes , but certainly not the greatest ever , great sides win trophies on a regular basis , leeds trophy count is nowhere near what it should have been
Consider the era they played in..Consider a side playing 68 games a season.. season after season..with a first team pool of 15 players..consider a side playing 8 games in 13 days.. all at the business end of a season.. consider a side forced to play a title decider 2 days after a FA Cup Final.. consider a side cheated out of European glory in two finals by referres who were later banned over bribery allegations.. consider a side that picked itself up again and challenged season after season.. in the mix to the end for everything..sometimes falling on their sword and sometimes but not always getting the rewards their skill and brilliance deserved..its no mistake this team 50 years on still trips off the tounge...
@@steakandsidjustleeds they did not play 68 games every season nowhere near , as far as leeds is concerned the revie side is talked about for one simple reason , its the ONLY side that as ever been relatively successful over a consistent period of time in their entire history . we are talking nearly fifty years ago now , and since then leeds have one league title to their name in 1992 , and spent 26 years not even in the top flight of english football , it was vastly different times back then and football as changed enormously , they were a great side, but should still have achieved far more than they actually did , they were always recognised as the bridesmaid and never the bride most of the time.
In the era this team played in for 10 years.. no English team won more or dominated more.. that is just a fact
