If I might add to this excellent information...I get a lot of ideas from children's coloring books that I pick up for $1.00 at the Dollar Stores. Flowers, teddy bears, ducks etc. Trace them out or cut them out of the book.
I just got into carving and some of the stuff turned out pretty good thanks to your videos! I'm gonna try making all the characters from Winnie the Pooh as it's the best thing in this entire world. Wish me luck!
I love that I found this channel, I am a huge fan of creating stuff myself, like I love sewing, and I’m learning how to embroider which is pretty easy, and I really want to learn how to knit and I REALLY REALLY want to learn how to carve

Super useful info, thanks for sharing! The winter here has made my hands idle and getting into whittling has been very beneficial for my own mental well being
@@CarvingisFun You are right, it is, I succeed maybe 1 time out of 5, but I think I fail at seeing the way to do it somehow... I've been carving since more than a year and a half, but never figured out , yet
@@Chlorophyle974 I think getting a 3D form for me is the hardest part too. I found it really useful to watch videos on drawing in 3D, even if you're not that much interested in drawing or anything like that, these videos can teach you how to see objects as 3D shapes as they are in real life, rather than relying on flat lines or the way we remember them in our head (which is often flawed). Then, I'll often have a look to see if the object I am carving has a 3D model online, e.g like on the website "sketchfab" you can look at 3D models of things and rotate them around. I did a deer carving recently and looking at photos really wasn't helping because they were often very flat and only from certain angles, looking at a 3D model allowed me to rotate it whichever way I wanted.
Thanks for these video's, i've been searching for a hobby, just picked up 2 basic flex cuts, a hook knife, and some wood blocks. (and safety gear :P) Thanks for the inspiration and great videos, I'll be making spoons in no time!
Thanks so much again. I have a huge problem visualizing from a blank block of wood, and I am not artistically inclined! This is now where I beg you to post a tutorial of how to do the elephant, because the *only* thing my son wants a carving of is an elephant 😆
Worken on that, it requires me to use a rotary tool and is very messy. Plus I burnt out 4 dremels aready :) new, better, n more powerful rotary tool is on the way.
Indeed it is! I considered doing both on the channel, but for the same size carvings wood takes less than an hour while alabaster takes more than 5 hours. Soapstone is faster but doesn't hold up so well with smaller carvings. Just dont have the available time to do the stone carvings on video.
@@CarvingisFun A timelapse of stone carving without instructions would be really fascinating to watch, just to see your process and the object develop.🙂 The one you showed today was beautiful.
Great video! I have tried to carve a simple fish a few times from basswood. I have such a difficult time when I get to the tail/fins. I feel like it has to do with the wood grain but idk exactly what it is. Do you have any tips? I know this question is incredibly vague. But any help is appreciated. I just feel like I'm having a tough time roughing out wood. My knife is plenty stropped and sharp and good quality blade.
Yep, I know what you're talken bout! You want to carve a curve in the fish but the wood grain is causing problems. You may have to come in at two opposing curved angles and intersect the cutsat the point the wood grain changes. This video at the 3:42 mark goes over what I'm talking about ua-cam.com/video/mQmt9y0kIoI/v-deo.html
Hello! We just trimmed our apple trees and I was able to get some nice twigs from it. They're still green and a bit damp since we've had a bit of snow. How would I go about drying them? They're each about 3 feet long and about an inch thick at the widest part. Some of the projects I have in mind involve keeping some bark intact. Right now They're laying on a newspaper covered table in the basement. Should I hang them?
I am getting a little disheartened. I have been practicing every day, and I take the time to sharpen my beavercraft knives. No matter what I do, my cuts are always messy and splintered, especially with roughing. I ended up buying a whetstone to see if that would help, it hasn't. I've been using the beavercraft basswood. Could that be the issue?
Beavercraft knives are good to get started with, but they can leave a little to be desired. How bout this, send me an email at brian@carvingisfun.com and let me see what I can do for ya. Comment on here when ya do so I can keep an eye out for it.
Mes amis me demandent ces animaux.

I really want to do a wolf! Thanks so much for the great guides!
Hardest part in my opinion is to go from 2D ( front and sides patterns) to a 3D form. I'd be definitly interested to learn how to do it !
Takes some practice but is completely doable:)

Try a Paddington bear pls that would look so cool
That would be a cute lil carving!! Gotta add that one to the list.

Do you think you could try doing a shark? Love the simplicity of your carvings!
I havenplans for a shark, just dont know when I will get to it yet.
hello, can you tell me what kind of basswood it is? I bought basswood but it is hard.
I use air dried basswood from a guy on ebay. I also did a video comparing different brands of basswood here ua-cam.com/video/uH5jNGgS7Tg/v-deo.html
I love that you searched for "Bunny".
what do you use to glue the picture to the wood?
Just regular craft glue or wood glue
Woah, stonecarving too? I imagine that's a whole different set of tools, huh? Have you considered doing stonecarving videos as well as woodcarving?
Indeed it is!

just keep them open to the air in a dry spot away from the elements.
Honestly, give it a shot carving them green as you may enjoy it better :)
