- Wood Gears - part 3
In this video, I make my 2nd set of wood gears from 1/4" MDF. I'm using the same gear design which I originally drew using LibreCAD. The only change made to the CAD drawing was to thicken the outer lines.
Just as with the 1st set of gears, I'm using a Bladerunner X2 to cut the MDF, I'm using a drill press to remove the material between the gear teeth, and this time, I'm using a mandrel with sandpaper taped on to sand the teeth.
Overall, this 2nd set of gears came out nicer than the 1st set. They mesh smoother and have fewer binds.

NICE WORK AND TAKING YOUR TIME IS THE BEST ADVICE FOR QUALITY WORK - SUGGESTION: AFTER YOU DRILL THAT FIRST FORSTNER HOLE, STOP THE DRILL BIT IN THAT HOLE AND THEN DRIVE A SMALL DRILL BIT INTO THE CENTER OF THE GEAR DEEP ENOUGH TO SECURE GEAR TO THE BACKING BOARD(LEAVE THAT DRILL BIT IN THE GEAR UNTIL YOU ARE COMPLETELY DONE DRILLING) - THEN YOU CAN PIVOT THE GEAR ACCURATELY TO THE NEXT GEAR HOLE - WORKS FOR ME EVERYTIME
Thanks for the tip and for watching! What do you use your wood gears for?
nice job patience pays off
Thank-you! I'm sure I will be making more gears again soon.
Awesome need a simple scroll saw to go with this beast ,Im going to get one.Well Done.
Thank-you and enjoy the saw.
As i was saying in your first vid ,If you dont have all the tools like fostner bits this would be a job with a scroll saw also ,well done .
Yes, I agree. One day, I will get back to making gears and will probably try making the cuts using a scroll saw.
If u put painter's tape down first then glue template to it then u can peel tape away
Yes, thanks for the tip! and for watching.
...insanity LOL
Thanks for your comment and for watching.
where can I find the templates for the different size wood gears to download?
g menasco Thanks for your question. All of the gears I have made so far, I have drawn my own templates. I you don't want to draw your own, then look here:

why you make gears with the samme size ?
Thanks for your question. I have very little experience making gears plus I was not certain how the "teeth" would mesh so I decided to start by making the gears the same size. In practice, sometimes gears of the same size are used to reverse the direction of the driving gear. (If the driving gear moves clockwise, then the driven gear will move counter-clockwise.) Future gear builds will be of different sizes.
