    I follow quite a few pro photographers on utube and I’ve learned a lot from them. But you my friend are among the best! Your knowledge and the way you explain things is easy to understand, your funny and pleasant personality is an added plus. I will continue being a follower to learn from you as I march on shooting more portraits as the calls come in.

    Absolutely love OnSet. This episode is just one of the reasons why. I bet there are thousands of photographers out there, me included, that are just beginning to delve in to studio work and flash, and just wouldn't know the basics like this. Sorted in 6 minutes and 16 seconds.
    Thank you Daniel and Mackenzie. 🖖

    Thanks for the very clear demonstration, Daniel and MacKenzie! I've grown to prefer your brighter and more specular portrait style, and this clearly shows what the soft box/grid combo can do, compared to the umbrella.

    How would you stop the 3:29 from happening with an umbrealla? Maybe use a different light bulb that emits softer yellower light?

    Great video Daniel, I am subscribing now. I got a question, what about the softbox 30x60? Would you rather it more than de octagon you using? It would be for fashion photography for my case not groups. Thanks for your help👏👍

      Big boxes cover more area when they are close, thus are "softer" -- so it depends on the look you want

    • @pictureeyecandy
      @pictureeyecandy 5 років тому

      @ Marcelino Nogueiro I agree I would like to see the use of a reflective umbrella Also using it opened and collapsed so you can direct the light better and should darken the background like a softbox.

    Maybe a silly question - the last time I tried this setup, my model's shadow was very harsh and visible on the backdrop. In this video, there's absolutely no shadow at all and the model is standing very close to the backdrop. Am I missing something?

    • @matthewlivingston3168
      @matthewlivingston3168 3 роки тому

      A variety of reasons I can imagine. Maybe your flash focal length was set up with a narrow throw like 50mm?? So you got a spotlight effect. I usually use a 35 or 24 mm focal length on my flash.

    How about the profoto umbrella deep with a diffuser. Over a soft box.

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer 5 років тому +2

      Nigel Atkinson Photography deep umbrella will have a narrower throw.. but not the “edge” control that a soft box has. The diffuser will make it less speculator, but also will likely widen the throw.

  • @Southlander1000

    What about an umbrella softbox? Would that be a good compromise that could give some of the benefits of an umbrella and still serve as a softbox, too?

    • @shifteleven
      @shifteleven 5 років тому

      I'm assuming you mean a reflective umbrella with a diffuser over it - if so, then all the diffuser is doing is diffusing the light. That is to say it's making the light less specular. The diffuser won't change the spread of the light. If you want more control, then perhaps a deep reflective umbrella or parabolic umbrella would be better. Or you could try collapsing the umbrella some and shoot through that.

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer 5 років тому +1

      Southlander1000 if it’s shaped like an umbrella, it’s an umbrella as far as look and coverage

  • @cosmo0080

    what if one used a flag with a umbrella help control the light ? rather than a soft box ?
    thanks

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer 5 років тому

      cosmo ianiro you can control the light in many ways, but that seems like more work than it’s worth unless you don’t have a softbox

  • @tinderbox218
    @tinderbox218 5 років тому +1

    I notice the ungridded softbox almost acts as its own fill in the shadows. I suspect that's more to do with the octo shape of it.

    Why the first shot is so dark - there is a lot of ambient light in studio?

    • @brigtsd7179
      @brigtsd7179 3 роки тому

      He is on F11 1/250. That makes the picture heavily underexposed (black) with that ambient light. That is intentional since he wants to use the flash as the only light source in this case.

    Hi Daniel!
    Thanks for the video.
    As I know the Profoto light has high quality and temperature consistency, but I can't understand why the photo was made with an umbrella is looking colder than another one was made with a softbox? ua-cam.com/video/A1-5LsCjBc4/v-deo.html
    Does a light modifier have an impact on light's temperature?

    • @naordaniel
      @naordaniel 3 роки тому

      One year after but better late... Well the answer is that modifiers can have impact on the light temperature but in this case, I think that Daniel forgot his white balance on auto (it's just too much of an impact)

    Why All the talk about the reflective umbrella and No show? That we have a wast difference between a shoot through and a softbox is obvious. Now show the reflective, what you can and what you can not do compared to the softbox. Remember to change flash-umbrella distance and try a silver without diffust etc. Youre not done yet Daniel!!! ;-)
