- This video will cover a bit of history for the O’Keefe & Merritt cooking range company. They were one of the most popular companies producing stoves from 1920s through the 1950s. They are a highly sought-after stoves for the retro lovers. The stove in this video is a 1950, 850-G.

I grew up with an O'Keefe & Merritt stove, which was built to last. My 7 year old modern stove just died and I'm ready to go back to a range that was built to last, a vintage O'Keefe & Merritt. They just don't make them like they used to.
I just got one yesterday! Its a real beauty too, in excellent condition. Everything works perfectly too. Griddle looks brand new, previous owner never used it. Im thrilled to have this gem.
I’m having a 1954 Aristocrat restored . COVID caused a lot of material delays but I’m looking forward to getting it soon. There’s so much chrome on it, it’s going to look like a Buick in the kitchen.

What a truly magnificent design and build. I cannot think of a better stove.
I got one in great condition for $150.00 on Ebay still working. I love it! I was born in the mid 50's and all my family had these.
I forgot to add that mine has the grillevater.
I recently bought a 1949 Westinghouse Commander and I will never own a modern oven again. I absolutely LOVE it ❤ Now I'm on a mission to find a 1950s refrigerator.

Great demo! I just got my 1960 O'Keefe & Merritt returned after a full restoration. I don't have the condiment feature or glass oven doors but I have the griddle in the middle and the Grillevator. The chrome and enamel finish on these stoves are just gorgeous. They definitely don't make them like them like this anymore. I love my stove! I live in Los Angeles and I have found that these vintage stoves are very common here more so than in other parts of the country probably because they factory was here. By the way, I love your vintage coffee pot on the counter as well.

From back in the day when the little wifey stayed home and cooked three meals a day plus desserts and still had time to host her Tupperware party.
I got a model 394 from a local thrift store for $175 and they even delivered and brought it in the kitchen. It was missing one handle and one grate had a broken tip and it’s missing it’s top panel but works awesome. The handle and grate were easily replaced and it fits under my microwave hood without the top. I love it and will never replace but do everything to keep it working. It’s perfect for proofing bread and love the burners. It’s got the disappearing shelf cover with the towel rack supports. Perfect for my 1949 kitchen.

@@8675-__ mine would be worth more if it was completely restored with the top light and timer/ clock. I’ve looked at a replacement and they’re $750.
So beautiful! We had a lovely, double-oven O’Keefe & Merritt stove growing up. It looked a lot like this one. Before that (in the early 1970’s), we had an early 1930s stove. It was two-toned, yellow and white. Something caught fire on it so my mom got rid of it and bought the O’Keefe & Merritt from somewhere.

I used to rent an apartment in the Bay Area that had a stove like this. It was so nice!
That is surprising. Most landlords find that renters do not know how to cook on them.
I found a Tappen Deluxe, on marketplace. $150. It works and is in great shape. She is the centerpiece of my renovated kitchen.
I grew up learning to cook on our 1950's Roper stove in L.A. I then inherited a 1946 O'Keefe and Merritt stove like the one in the video but even prettier! It had the oven on the right and the big grillevator on the left. Then another broiler below and pot storage below. I brought it back East with me to Brooklyn and everyone flipped out and wanted it! I had to sell it a number of years later and hope to replace it one day!❤❤❤❤❤

It's super-easy to get your red lights to work again. They probably still work but the insides have sputtered so much that their insides have turned black so you cannot see them light. Get F4 or F6 neon light bulbs with a 100K resistor and replace. Your clocks seem to not work, too. That requires some fiddly and time-consuming but not difficult work to get working again. No matter what, a working timer/clock will make ticking sounds that might drive you up the wall. It did to me. Your non-functioning griddle temperature dial is a 5 minute change to a working one.

What a gorgeous stove !! I have two that I restored with new insulation with no traces of grease and I even got the clocks to work . I will sell one and keep the other I cannot wait to cook and bake on this wonderful time piece.

@@mlaiuppa if your gonna replace the entire insulation even between the ovens it’s a bit of a challenge. But it’s doable and totally worth the little effort. What a difference with the new insulation makes .
When things were made to last. My 60 year old stove is still going well.

@@anothervintageday I just looked. It’s Domestigue on one side and the other side says GEC. Some of the writing has worn off. I assume it is General Electric Company. I’m in Australia. I assume it is at least that age as it is in Fahrenheit and I think over here we have been using Celsius for at least 50 or more years.

You've produced a wonderful video about my favorite vintage stove brand - OKM. Thank you. One tiny correction. The model 5850 is called the Bel-Air, not the Aristocrat (nor Town and Country). If you check a Jun 3, 1951 Arizona Post newspaper, you'll see a huge ad showcasing five OKM stoves, including the Bel-Air.

@@anothervintageday This is a fine video. My uncle worked for OKM and helped build a good number of the Aristocrats. Since they built less estate sized stoves than other models just two men worked on these in a section of the factory. You could actually call them hand built. Before he died he showed me paperwork on several of the stoves. The big 6 burner was at one time called the Bel-Air however it also was originally called the 5850 and also the Aristocrat. This is for absolute, definite sure. I saw all the documents. Town and Country was never a name used for OKM stoves. Western Holly and Roper had a court battle over this name for their estate size stoves. Hope this is of interest to you.

Love the video I have a stove like this and the antique repairman told me not to keep the vanishing tray down as it will cause burn marks on the top. Has that happened to yours?
It has not but I can understand how that could happen if your burners are turned up to high.
@@anothervintageday I was told the same thing caused by the heat of the pilots always being on. I’m looking to see if I should have pilot covers on my stove.
Oh I wish these were available now I’d have to look high and low to find something like this they’re so nice why do they improve stuff until it’s almost ridiculous we don’t even like them I looked at the new stoves I was so disgusted I couldn’t believe it you’re supposed to sit on the floor then lift out your biggest meal of the year you’re gonna have to put bath towels on the floor to set it on sure can’t bend over and pick up something like that hot from that low of a position and then you’re gonna have to have help picking that thing up and putting it on the counter after you get yourself back up on your feet I can’t imagine it
how do I find out the year my Magic Chef Stove was built?
How much did and does that stove cost in it's day? And what would it cost in 2022. I love old stoves.
I am not sure. But considering you can always get it repaired it is priceless! You can find refurbished ones on line.

I had seen a gas stove that looks a lot like yours on "Tasting History with Max Miller" (his was an O'Keefe & Merritt from the 50s as well).
You can still find them out there.
The older appliances are much better built vs today’s garbage. I can tell that’s very well built back when people took pride in their work.not so much anymore the craftsmanship isn’t there today like it way back.
