    Yes, we have grown on dried leaves! Be sure they are thoroughly dehydrated before using them (even though you will be wetting them when you install your bed, fully drying them first is necessary) and if you can, shred them first it will work much better.

    here's a few suggestions worth trying
    select the top type - there are lots available.
    grow them in the right environment - some eg oyster muchrooms like cool humid conditions and can be placed outside (I learned these and why they work from Gregs Mushroom Grower website )

    Elm Oyster mushroom do you have to boil with hot water straw ?

    • @100thMonkeyMushrooms
      @100thMonkeyMushrooms  10 років тому +3

      You do not need to boil the straw in hot water for outdoor beds.

  • @100thMonkeyMushrooms

    The seeds in the hay have a lot of nitrogen which encourages contamination. Check the local feed stores for a bale of straw.
    Happy Growing!

    Very interesting video! I'm curious with a bed like this and in shade can you produce mushrooms year round?

    • @100thMonkeyMushrooms
      @100thMonkeyMushrooms  9 років тому +3

      doucher bagger Generally, you will get 3-4 productions of mushrooms per season (spring to fall) then the straw is spent.

    can you mix mulch, straw together. Do you recommend coffee grounds in the this mix, or to add to the water when you are sterilizing at 170 degrees?

    • @100thMonkeyMushrooms
      @100thMonkeyMushrooms  10 років тому

      Use coffee grounds sparingly...they are high in nitrogen;hence, they attract contamination more readily.

    It would be wonderful if there is a way to inter crop mushroom with vegetables or trees. The vegetables / trees can provide the needed shade. Spent mushroom compost should help to feed the vegetables / trees. Wish you would do some experiments and show us how it can be done.

    hi, i live here in the Philippines. I know there are mass producers of mushroom here that uses rice hay. But I'm not aware if there are products here like your mushroom kit for those who want to grow mushroom in different containers in our backyards. Is it possible to order from you, and how much is your mushroom kit? Thanks

      Philip Bartolome Philip, Ufortunately, we do not ship outside the USA. Find a local source of oyster mushroom spawn and apply the same method described in the video using rice hay. Thanks for watching!

    If you look at the package of those "elm oysters", why are the gills decurrent, they really shouldn't be? So much elm oyster sold is apparently not actually a Hypsizygus but a Pleurotus?

    • @mnforager
      @mnforager 4 роки тому

      These are definitely not Hypsizygus (elm oyster) but are in fact a Pleurotus (oyster) species.

    Could I use a plastic tarp instead of cardboard for the bottom liner?

    • @100thMonkeyMushrooms
      @100thMonkeyMushrooms  10 років тому +1

      A plastic tarp will create standing water which is a large risk for contamination. The cardboard allows water to pass through.

      100thMonkeyMushrooms Okay that is what I was thinking. Could a bed like this be created with shiitake saw dust spawn or does that need to be on logs?

    • @100thMonkeyMushrooms
      @100thMonkeyMushrooms  10 років тому

      Shiitake will not grow in beds...as you mentioned, must be on logs.

      Ama Pit it certainly helps especially indoors. But no as long as you're willing to have a few contaminated jars or bags. If you make your own spore syringes or prints than that will help with the cost of spores.

      Because outdoors you have the uv light from the sun which helps kill bacteria and mold.
