    Once asked the waitress at a sushi place in Manhattan if I could get sushi with cream cheese. She gave me a weird look and said, "I don't think we can do that, I'll have to ask." I was confused because I thought cream cheese was a pretty standard ingredient at sushi places. She came back with my sushi, I started eating it and it was the most delicious sushi I'd ever had... but it wasn't cream cheese. It was kimchi. The waitress thought I had said kimchi, and I have no idea why a sushi place had it, but the combination was pretty amazing.

      +Liam,
      you really need to lighten up. people make choices. most Americans spend a ton of money on eating out. i don't. it's a choice. 2nd, if you were less off which you apparently are not, you would notice a lot of poor and even homeless folks using the internet at the library, McDonald's, Starbuck's and Safeway supermarkets. If you don't know that, you must be pretty well off. Be grateful that you are.

    I love kimchi! Anyone in North America who hasn't yet discovered Asian Supermarkets is *seriously* missing out. I actually can't imagine what my life would be like without a major part of my diet including mostly asian food that is bought there. Tofu, rice, rice rolls, rice noodles, packs of dried & salted seaweed, seaweed, sushi, wasabi, wasabi peas, curry powder, curry broth for soup, miso paste, etc. the list just goes on and on. I'm eating curry coconut rice with lots of veggies right now! Also, I'm vegan. Asian supermarkets have a ton of stuff that is fantastic for a vegetarian or vegan diet. I bet most people haven't thought of this, but it's absolutely true.

    I love David Chang and "Ugly Delicious"... but I'd like to clear up a myth regarding Asian foods.
    Naturally-occurring MSG (found in tomatoes and variety of other foods, or as a natural byproduct of fermentation such as soy sauces processed using the honjozo method) isn't a problem. However, the MSG additive used as a flavor enhancer in most commercially prepared foods tends to be concentrated.
    For people overly sensitive to it, food with heavily concentrated MSG results in excessive glutamate in the brain, and excessive stimulation of nerve cells. Our body reacts poorly to (or can not process) that heavy concentration of excitotoxins - it leads to headaches, shortness of breath, swelling in the throat, and/or vomiting.
    The worst culprits aren't Asian recipes (unless they require those damn seasoning packets or use commercially prepared sauces). Instead, it's Campbell's creamed soups, Doritos and other flavored chips, and commercially frozen or canned foods that include MSG as part of the chemical mix used to 'preserve' the flavor.

      Americans just take a while to appropriate foreign ingredients. Germans came to America a long time ago, thus sauerkraut has since been appropriated (along with hamburgers and hot dogs). Koreans have been in America far less time. Want more proof? Chinese food is an American staple, but the Chinese have been here since the 1800s.

    • @kingjamestres

    Eats sauerkraut - "that's a hot dog." Eats kimchi - "that's an immigrant's hot dog." SMH Stephen. Just proved David's point about how there is racism associated with foods.

      you ignored the obvious to start playing your racism card. as was explained earlier, sauerkraut has ALWAYS been accepted as normal topping for hotdogs, and part of the American hotdog image. jesus Christ, you guys need to comprehend what you are hearing, instead of just waiting for specific words that can enable your bullshit narrative.

    I love Stephen but you can see the implicit racism in how he called the kimchi hotdog an immigrant hot dog. Sauerkraut is also an “immigrant” dish yet we consider the kimchi to be foreign. Not saying Stephen is a racist but we always forget our biases in stuff like this.

      @TaymaShine 6 років тому +12

      youngleo_95 He did that on purpose. You think STEPHEN wouldn't catch that? Especially since David explained it to him right before.

      I don't think you guys heard him say "that's more american" right before saying it's an immigrant's hot dog. His point being essentially that everything "american" originated elsewhere.

      I was thinking that too. Stephen is well-meaning but even when he's trying not to be racist, he still shows his disconnect. I don't think Stephen understood the msg thing at all. When Stephen played his character, I think many of us gave him the most credit since it was satire and he was pointing out the ridiculousness of the right, and I assumed he was as "liberal" (for lack of a better term, socially aware, not racist, etc.) as can be and we loved him for it. But watching him be himself now is interesting. I'm glad David used that example too because it's those biases about various East Asian cultures that people don't think about as much in America. I thought he was going to go for the fried chicken like that episode. Also, the hotdog is probably better with kimchi, and I'm glad he liked it, but the point was more about acceptance in culture progressing rather than one country vs. another country. Like you said, saurkraut is also an immigrant dish but from white cultures. Stephen's comments unintentionally demonstrates David's point about biases. This is partly why representation would be nice in the big late night shows (which are all hosted by white males like Fallon, Colbert, Corden, Kimmel, but no offence to them personally, as they are great); even when Stephen tries to be sensitive to these things, there's a point where he can't really get it since he has never had to go through being the target of racism, even casual racism. George Lopez was great.
