Photoshop Tutorial: Supertext
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лип 2024
- Looking for that classic "Superman" logo look from the comic book covers? Photoshop has a bunch of 3D capabilities now, but I always hate taking the time to render things when I'm in a hurry. In this tutorial we use some simple techniques to "extrude" our text just by using layer styles and Photoshop's "Transform Again" functionality.
Go to my website for links to grab the font I used and to download the PSD file to inspect things further. You'll find useful layer styles and can poke around on your own!

The video had uploaded on Jul 31, 2015
, and I just watch this in 2019. Thanks, Doug Keeling for the simple and great tutorial you've shared.
THANK YOU! Not only I learne how to do this, but you also teach me a lot of PS tricks and shorcuts that I didn´t know! You rock! ;D
Guys, instead of doing (CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + T) you can do (CTRL + ALT + UP ARROW + LEFT ARROW)
That helped so much, thank you.
HOW TO DO STEP AND REPEAT ONTO ANOTHER LAYER IN PHOTOSHOP CS6 (WINDOWS):
Before pressing Shift+Contrl+Alt+T go the layer, right click and go to ''Rasterize Layer''( Not to confuse with ''Rasterize Layer Style''). Then just repeat as he says in the video and you'll be fine.
Thank you for the advice, i was having trouble
thanks for this. i was so lost, lol
thanks a lot man
If we ever meet, remind me to kiss you--or, at least, buy you a beer. I was about to jump out of my window because the Shift-Cmd-Opt-T (Mac) wasn't working. Your comment on rasterizing the freaking layer solved that issue. I am submitting your name to the Vatican for immediate sainthood. St. NoPeopleLand. That sounds pretty classy! Thanks, again!
My man
New tutorial clarifying 'Transform again is up! ua-cam.com/video/k43X6ghlTQk/v-deo.html
It's really nice of you that you have made this video but you're actually just explaining again what you're doing. I'm still having the same problem even though I know a few things about Photoshop. Not sure if it's because I use CS5 but it definitely does not work, no matter what I've tried.
Anyway, I've found a way to do it anyway by duplicatin the layer first and then simply transforming again. Thank you for the amazing tutorial.
Brilliant - took me a while to get the desired effect, but far more control than the illustrator option! Many thanks!
I think this is a fabulous tutorial! I could get everything done except the color palette I'll figure it out. At almost 70 years old it has to be a good tutorial if I can follow it! Thank you
I like your teaching style! I'm trying this with CS4 and although
it looks similar, it doesn't give the same effect. I noticed that
"transform again" isn't creating new layers. Maybe that's why I'm
getting letters that look more like little buildings with their roofs
removed. Any thoughts on how to do this with CS4?
I did watch your transform again video as well.
Thank you so much for your time and expertise, much appreciated.
What an awesome tutorial! Exactly what I was looking for. Beautifully done. Gonna try it out. Thanks for putting it together.
Satyajit Sahu Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Watching this in 2020!! Thank you for this tutorial, this is exactly what i wanted :D
The reverse arranging trick is mind blowing! Never know I have that in Photoshop!
Brilliant! Thx guys! You save my work!
Incredible tutorial...thanks so much!!
You have earned yourself a subscriber for your excellent tutorials!
+Eeriewolf Thank you!
Thanks! Great tutorial, helped me out a lot!
Amazing thank you so much! super easy to follow!
This tutorial was amazing! Thank you very much! :)
AMAZING! THANK YOU FOR THIS! HUGS FROM BRAZIL!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you!
This is wonderful. Thanks!
this isn t a easy tutorial but after a few attemps i succeeded and learned a lot - thank you
For those of you having issues with the Transform another layer aspect do the following: right click the duplicated layer, *** Click Rasterize Layer ***, now transpose, move up and one click to the left - follow the instructions as described.
You will see this helps the text duplicate each layer and work as described!
this is the best solution
This worked for me
DUDE! Thanks for saving so much headache!
OMG!! THANK YOU BUDDY!!!!
Thanks for that. Google doesn't know that solution yet.
Respect to your good work, thanks a lot
Grazie! Super Fantastico!
Great job! Very Useful !
awesome. i am inspired
really good tutorial (respect from belgium)
Got it ! figured out how to get the color palette on there!!
Don't know which version of PS you're using, but all this also works in CS5. The "Opt" key on Mac is the equivalent of "Alt" on PC. Thanks for the tut.
HI thnks for this tutorial..it helps a lot..it did not turn out exactly beautiful like urs but i work around and adjust it the way i know and voila hehe it looks less and more like what u trying to achieve..overall i quite satisfied..mine at least still have the superman style...thnks!
Its very good! Working! Thanks
Thanks for the toturial!
Amazing and Awesome Video.... From Brazil.
Great tutorial!
Wow that was ingenious
Can't thank you enough!
This helped me so much
thank you very much!
Thanks a lot pal, great help.
Great tutorial! I downloaded the PSD, can you tell me how I change the name and how I write something else instead?
thank you so much man, subbed
Is that complex to film the entire screen ?
DOPE.. USED FOR OTHER TEXT... SUBBED!
Do we edit the text you already created or is the PSD just so you can show us the final product?
FYI to future generations: The name of the font used is "raleway.ttf" NOT "railway.ttf." Both are on Font Squirrel. It took me awhile to catch on to this factoid.
Badass!! Really helped me out. Thanks buddy!
Thank you! Subscribe for more! I'm hoping to start putting out more tutorials, more often. :)
great tutorial
I've been trying to figure out what i've been doing wrong - turns out if you do the transform again with a smart object it won't work. I just ended up doing it straight in photoshop with the shapes like the authors has done.
It won't let me select the anchor point on the right side which in turn is not giving the desired effect on the direction of the 3D. I have googled it but no luck finding out why I cannot choose the anchor points.
love it
Wow! Thanks!
Adorei! like!
5:44 my text looks very different after pressing inner bevel. I have the exact same options pressed in that section and down the side, but it still has a weird 3D pointy shape
On the layer: style Bevel & Emboss. LOWER the SIZE.
Awesome video, thanks! How do you create the dotted pop art effect (seen at 0:11)?
+Jonny Finity Thanks! I actually just used a plugin called Permanent Press from a company called Mister Retro. It basically lets you digitally "print" your graphics so you can get some of those authentic results from the offset printing process. The plugin is a bit pricey, but if you do retro-style graphics on a regular basis, it's worth it. www.misterretro.com/
My mistake, actually works perfect, it was just I did something wrong and then started all over
gain. Thank You.
I REALLY struggled with this tut. I mean BIG TIME and it was namely due to that whole "transform onto another layer" Which just did not work and I had to keep clicking out of the "shape box" in fact your icon looked more like a "smart object whereas mine was two boxes with the link chain in the middle. I am using CS5. I got around it by using the suggestion from Eve Novak below but the only thing I'd say about that is that you need to do the nudging THEN duplicate the layer or you will just be doing the same thing over and over and won't get the extrude. I also found that doing the bevel from below worked better too as reversing the layers and the levels didn't do too much. It was also best to have the extrude in the colour you wanted first. My last tip is to save a version of the text layer so if it goes belly up you don't have to keep starting again. I got there in the end though and the way I did the retro look on mine was copying the text and adding a half tone effect to it then lowering the opacity so it showed the grain over the letters but I could still see the shading. I did the shading with the burn tool.
Thanks for your insights and tips on this! Adobe keeps changing things in Photoshop and you never know what versions people will be using as they follow along. In the future, I'll try to make it a point to mention what version I'm currently using at the beginning. Glad you were able to get it working!
Keeling Design & Media And thank you for the video, I appreciate it. :-) xx
hey @Doug Keeling great tutorial..thank you....is it possible to just edit the text layer from your .psd download and then have the entire file update?
Hey there! Unfortunately, no, there is no way to change the text and automatically update the effect. This would be possible with some kind of script or action, but it would take a good bit of time to program. This tutorial is several years old now, and at the time it was created, the file was intended to show the process and the layers involved. Thanks for watching!
@@DougKeeling Thank you so much! I have to finish a graphic for a Tshirt, and I have worked off of .psd templates in the past that worked off of smart objects/linked files...yours didnt appear to be like that, but I wanted to verify in case I was just missing something....Thanks keep up the amazing work my friend! Cheers from San Diego,CA!
I was good up until the color palette. How do you make one? And I was doing so good haha!!
Thank you very much
Hi...I am using a PC and having trouble with "Transform Again" to get the "Extruding" effect of the text. I did change to the move tool and path selection tool with no success. I am using Control + Shift + Alt + T but the layers do no duplicate...instead the text duplicates not creating the effect. Is there something I am missing since I am using a PC?
I'm having the same problem!
same here doesn't do the transform in new layer - in fact just loses shape, (PS cs6 - windows)
same here
Found an alternative, you can first do: ctrl+J and then ctrl+shift+T, and just keep doing this for how many layers you want
is there a difference doing this in cs4 mine is not coming out right
Amazing tutorial!
Thank you!
Unbelievable sorcery!
Question, how do you get the files into photoshop. Thats the onl thing im confused
¡Excelente Tutorial Amigo!
+Miguel Angel Thank you!
cool you have tricks and technic i dont have. but it looks easier if you create 3d text with coraldraw
Around 9:09 shift, control, alt, t isn't duplicating layers, only the image with applied style to the same layer. Not leaving a bevel. Help?
I got new technigues thanks
With the step at 9:03 (CMD + SHIFT + OPT + T), what is the commands for PC? Because i cant seem to get it :(
dont worry, that worked. BUT, when it renders it facing in an upward direction, how do i fix that?
Little delay in the reply, but you can select all the layers and reverse them from the menu under Layer > Arrange > Reverse. That should make it appear to face downward.
Thank you very much
I keep coming back to those basics videos because I STILL don't know how to properly use the software. I'm gonna cry
Thanks for this tutorial and thanks for the files!!
Heads up, your website only has a download to the Raleway font in THIN, not EXTRA BOLD. I found it online elsewhere though :)
+Michelle Potter Thanks for watching and for the heads up about the link! I've replaced that, now so it should be good to go for other viewers in the future. :)
+Keeling Design & Media cool thanks, I'm subscribing! I learned some new shortcuts from your video. Thanks for making it so clear :)
If your image isn't making multiple copies when you do 'CMD+Shift+Opt+T', then right click on your text layer and click 'Convert to smart object'
Excelent video. Thank you
Thank you!
Why does the GMS tNice tutorialng doesn't soft sa way like it did in the video?
why when i changed the color of the 3d the background also changes??
im a beginner, so why when i press ctrl+shift+alt+t, my thing look different, theres no copy 1 copy 2 and so on,
GOOD NEWS for CS4 users...
You can use this tutorial with one added step! All you need to do (in addition to all the instructions in this tutorial) is create duplicate layers and use the arrow keys to move each layer one pixel up and one pixel left (transform again doesn't work for this effect in CS4). 20 layers is all it takes to create a great effect.
Next question: Doug, do you have a tutorial for creating the authentic comic book effect (dots and texture) you threw in at the end?
Thanks for that tip, Eve! I don't currently have a tutorial for the comic book effect, but I've had a few requests about that. To be honest, I actually just used a plugin called Permanent Press from a company called Mister Retro. It basically lets you digitally "print" your graphics so you can get some of those authentic results from the offset printing process. The plugin is a bit pricey, but if you do retro-style graphics on a regular basis, it's worth it. www.misterretro.com/ I may look into recreating that effect without the plugin as well.
Have you tried the halftone option in Pixelate under Filters? xx
very nice totorial, but when ever i merge the layers together, the look like many layers of paper, not like in your case like one body
Can someone help me, every time I pick the move tool it only does that effect to the shape layer and I can't seem to get it off the shape layer
Take a look at my comment above I've resolved this issue with the coloring and duplicate layers
I have PS CS6 and I did step by step everything you said (I swear it, I'm pretty sure) but the text came out different than yours. What went wrong, dude? Please, help me. I want to create that same style text but using the word "SEVERICH"... Could you do it for me. I couldn't do it. Please!
it becuse, in some versions of photoshop Shift + Ctrl + Alt + T shortcut dose'nt work anymore. instad of doing that, do Shift + Alt + UP ARROW & LEFT ARROW. one layer at a time

Had a problem with my Levels layer
any help? Seems to not be taking shape
I may need some more details. Are you having trouble getting the levels adjustment layer to "clip" or be masked by the layer beneath it?
when I hit CTRl+shift+alt+T it only add copy's of my mask on the same layer, no new layers
+Jonah Block Interesting... Maybe you're transforming the mask instead of the layer itself? Make sure that the layer is selected rather than the mask when you do the transform. Again, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what the issue might be, but I'll try to help as best I can.
My beveling isn't copying with each new later that I created . . . or it appears not to be . . . I don't see the definition like yours has. When I did the Transform Again, although a new layer showed up on my artwork, it did not appear to the right in the window that shows all of my layers. Weird. Maybe that has something to do with the beveling not appearing on the new layers?
That's a good question. Possibly a glitch? I haven't encountered that before, but it seems like Photoshop is full of bugs since the CC era.
Is there an alternate way to do the CMD + SHIFT + OPT + T ? I'm using Windows and I'm not used to using the keys anyway . . . that could be my problem--or maybe there really is a glitch because last night I was able to do it successfully with the keys but now it's not working again today. So I kind of feel like it could be a glitch. When I tried it using the drop down menu (edit, transform path, again), it still was weird. So I'm also thinking that maybe there is something set a little differently on my end. It might help to see a close up screenshot of all of your settings. Do you mind helping me a little more?
Amazing tutorial. However, that transform/duplicate problem (I also watched your resolution video) forced me to spend 2 hours trying to make it work :D I arrived at a conclusion that its probably the photoshop version issue. So, I ended up doing all the transform/copying manually... 50 times... :D Anyway, golden tutorial. Thanks!
Oh no! :) Yeah, the version issue is definitely a problem on UA-cam, especially since Creative Cloud came along and they update things more frequently. Glad you were able to make it work though!
When I cmd + shift + opt + T I don't get another layer, but it does "transform again." help!
+nicole leblanc Thanks for watching! I'm guessing it's because you're transforming the path inside the shape layer, rather than the entire layer itself. Make sure the path is completely deselected first (using the Path Selection Tool), then try transforming it again. Let me know if you still have trouble. :)
+Keeling Design & Media Thank you! It worked. But I have to go and deselect the path layer every time I transform again :)
+nicole leblanc Well that's kind of inconvenient! Odd... Maybe the initial transform was done on the path, rather than the whole layer? I'll keep an eye on this. If others have the same problem, I'll create a clarification video about that segment.
Thank you so much for your responsiveness :) I appreciate your videos!

Hi. The supertext.psd is off
What about the halftones in your final?
That was done using a plugin called Permanent Press from MisterRetro (www.misterretro.com/filters/permanent-press). Photoshop does have several halftone effects built in, and you can certainly experiment to create your own effect - but I haven't found anything that does quite as nice a job as this plugin.
for peoples that watching this After 2020 or People having truble Duplicating shortcuts not working properly do this.!
in some versions of photoshop Ctrl + Shift + Alt + T shortcut dose'nt work anymore. instad of doing that, do Shift + Alt + UP ARROW & LEFT ARROW. one layer at a time
help when i merge it it becomes full gray and the bezzle are outside
Im having the same problem
Okay, no matter how many times I try this, I canNOT change the text color. Whole dang thing turns yellow.
i had troubles when you change the color to grey....didn't understand the delete option. It would be nice to see the whole screen. anybody can help me? pleaseee!!! sorry for my english :D
Thanks for watching! Pressing "Option + Delete" (Mac) or "Alt + Backspace" (Windows) fills your current layer with the foreground color you've selected. So I chose the gray color, then with the shape layer selected, pressed those keys to make it gray. Hope that helps!
i'll try, then i tell you....thanks a lot!!!
11:41 CMD-E Loses all the shadow texture of the "3d" layer
had the same problem, try rasterizing the selected layers before merging them
They must have had really good computers back then.
hard tutorial but good, thanks
Ojalá la hicieses en Español para los que no sabemos Ingles. Es genial, pero no entendemos muchos de los pasos ya que tampoco se ve bien la pantalla de Photoshop y no sabemos las herramientas que usas. Gracias de todas formas. :´(
lov u
I really thought I was the only one. Like I was buggin'.
the "cmd + shift + opt + T" thing doesnt workk helppp
+MMTheHighEndOfLow - I'm not sure what the problem might be. Make sure that you do it directly after the first transformation (don't do anything else in between). I may have to do an additional video about this.
+Keeling Design & Media Please make a video with this problem i cannot seem to find a way to get it to work thanks. And GREAT WORK! A+
Thanks Luis Benitez! I'm in the process of creating one - hopefully I can get it published soon. :)
