  • In 1958, Fleischer revived Out of the Inkwell Films, Inc. and partnered with his former animator Hal Seeger to produce 100 color Out of the Inkwell (1960-1961) cartoons for television. Actor Larry Storch performed the voices for Koko and supporting characters Kokonut and Mean Moe.

I'm so sad Larry Storch passed away today... exactly 6 mon. before his 100th BD. Not only was he supremely talented (great comic & awesome impressionist - his Cary Grant was DEAD ON!), he was a very humble & the most gracious of gentlemen. There was a humility about him that you just don't find anymore nowadays. I loved Out of the Inkwell & Tennessee Tuxedo. RIP Sir, you definitely earned your wings. 10:17 am 7-8-22

Never thought I'd see anything from the 1960's Out of the Inkwell show. Great find.

Thanks for the heads-up on Larry Storch. Didn't know he was still kicking. He's up there with Dick Van Dyke and Mel Brooks, as of this 2022 posting. Laughter keeps you young and healthy.

Mean Moe the Russian hunter... I remember on F Troop, Sargeant Agarn had a passionate "thing" for Russian Gypsies. :-) I never knew he was a cartoon voice actor also.

These were the first cartoons I remember watching. From about 1966 (age 2) to 1969 when I started kindergarten, my cousins and I would watch this and "Johnny Cypher from Dimension Zero" at our grandmother's house on Charleston SC's "Cartoon Carnival" on WUSN TV2. Throughout our lives and up to his death, the cousin closest in age to me would sing the KoKo Theme "Out of the Inkwell, comes Ko Ko the Clown/Let's gather around/For Ko Ko the Clown" as an inside joke between us. Seeing it again after some 53 years, it's surprisingly as good as I remember and actually quite amusing in spite of the very limited animation. Thank you for preserving a part of my personal heritage.

Loved these revived color episodes as a kid. They used to play them with the Abbot and Costello cartoons, back around 1969. Been looking for them since before the internet. They seem to be hard to find. Now if we can just find the other 99. Almost gave up. Who could forget the catchy tune. Thanks

I'm from New York and saw these starting around 1964 or so. They would cycle these along with Betty Boop every so often. After-school shows were full of revivals during the 60s... 3 Stooges, Rascals, Abbot and Costello, Dick Tracy, Krazy Cat, Felix the Cat, and the weirdest of them all... Clutch Cargo, Diver Dan, and Colonel Bleep. If you ever wondered "Why the Boomers are so frikken weird???"

They might have revived Bimbo while they were at it. You'd never guess from this that Koko was the first animated character to move smoothly.

I am giving this a thumbs up for Not An Animation Historians efforts in bringing us this rare toon. But it does not capture the spirit of the original Koko/Out of the Inkwell cartoons at all. Koko even seems second fiddle to the Russian character. Thank you for the interesting post though!

I did not see this show EVER growing up and recently found out about this revival by reading "Wild Minds" but I can say this series has its unique charm to it (similar to a HB shows). Thank you for sharing this!
NOT AS INTERESTING AS THE ORIGINALS BUT STILL VERY UNIQUE!

I remember this cartoon from a local Chicago kids t.v. show, "Cartoon Town" with the late Bill Jackson, and the Post-master of Cartoon Town, Dirty Dragon.
I don't know if Dirty Dragon is still alive----dragons do live a long time, though.
