    The reason you would change the oil hot is so that any heavier sediments would be lifted and suspended in the oil. Where as when you do it cold the heavy sediments tend to stay at the bottom of the oil pan.

    • @nismomike3182
      @nismomike3182 5 років тому

      Also helps to eliminate sludge build up right?

    • @HockeyHead252
      @HockeyHead252 5 років тому +1

      NISMO MIKE yes and no sludge build up can be from not changing the oil frequently enough. What happens is the oil starts to break down, losing its viscosity and becomes sludgy. But letting the oil heat up then changing it more frequently can help reduce and engine build up. Basically Changing it cold and frequently won’t cause a build up but it won’t get all the heavy sediments or dirt.

      If you over tighten it’s not so much about stripping the filter but rather pinching the o-ring which can cause it to leak. Hand tight for me only but always follow factory maintenance manual procedures.

    Changed the oil on my 981 last weekend and figured out that iCarsoft scan tool can show a live reading of the oil level sensor without the engine on. In the shop manual it specifies the oil level necessary to prevent engine harm. Not quite as easy as a dip stick but I found it really nice piece of mind before I turned on the engine. Thought you might be interested in that trick too Matt.

    An oil filter should be hand tightened - you put it on way too tight using that huge wrench - hence the excessive tightness when taking the old one off. Just saying.....

Mine is sideways on the back side of the block facing the firewall so it’s really not possible. Never had any issues.

    Staples carries a 3'x4' desk chair mat that would be used in a carpeted office for $35. Check one out to lay over the swisstrax when using the oil drain, no clunky movement as the casters will glide smoothly. I'm sure it would tuck nicely behind the cabinets for storage.

    Matt, you do really need to use a torque wrench on those drain plugs: you are "cranking" on those as if they are bolts with steel threads! They are aluminum! And when, not if, you strip or tear up a thread you won't like the repair (heli coil etc.) so what is left..... replacing the casting?
    Its striking that you are so concerned with many other details on other matters, but when it comes to relevant and significant details , like torque specs - to prevent ruining threads , you shrug your shoulders! Don't say we didn't mention it..... the day is coming.
