The Roman's fought in a way that for them was " manly " and they viewed ambuscades as being somewhat cowardly.
Hannibal fought smart and used terrain to his ( as one should ), advantage!
The early Roman's always learned from their enemies and adjusted accordingly.
Hannibal exploited there own fighting style, used their weaknesses/ ego/ and strengths against them. He handed the Roman's their asses on several very large battles!
But ultimately, it was his own people's back in Carthage that made him fail busy not helping him when he was on a roll!
It took Scipio and other Roman generals years of losing against Hannibal to properly adjust their tactics/strategy to defeat him.
