I'm watching this video having just come back from a weekend in the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, night temps in the 20's, so not super cold, but I used my Swagman as an underquilt. Easy to set up, worked well for me but then i'm short 5'8" so maybe others not so much. I use it as a jacket, sleeping bag in warmer weather, I love that thing.

I love the Swagman Roll and have used it as an under blanket; at 5'7" tall it worked well down to around 32 degrees fahrenheit. In colder temps I used it with a second under blanket (Snugpak) and slept very comfortably with just the Snugpak over quilt alone. My four hammocks are all double size so they cocoon me. In warmer temps I use the Helikon Tex poncho as a shelter (plowpoint) and the Swagman Roll as a blanket; and the Sarma sleeping pad with wings for ground insulation.

Due to my disabilities I was forces to discover a new way to enjoy the outdoors. That is when I discovered hammock camping. I have really bad muscle pains and cannot sleep on the ground anymore. That being said, I have two complete hammock systems, one camo and one urban grey. I love my hammock systems with quilts and hang in my office regularly. That product is a great expedient or cheaper alternative to an underquilt. Like that product, I had my quilts made with clips at the foot end so I can use them as a throw, or cinch them uo and buckle them for a footbox. I like to push the limits of my gear and see how cold I can sleep in mine too. If you drape a woobie over your ridgeline and tuck between your hammock and the under quilt, you will create a cocoon that will trap in body heat as well! It will allow you to cap in cooler temps. I found the woobie long enough to cover but left a small opening on the end for fresh air. Was super comfortable! I will see if I can share some images with you on one of your platforms. Cheers mate

I am going to take a survival 101 course next weekend. I have never been camping so I have been pulling gear together last few weeks. its supposed to drop down into the low 40's. after watching this I think I will be ok. I'm 5'8". I was going to take the course when it was warmer, but missed it. So I'm taking it now. I have the DD Hammock, the Free soldier tarp, the swagman roll, the Helikon poncho, "emergency" blanket ( that you hated) reinforced it like Dave said, Ektos Wool blanket. just in case for ground I also have the Therm zloft sol underpad, and Exped Duro 3R, and 3x7 tyvek ground cloth. Didn't know what would work for me, so I got all of it. I think I have adequate clothing. won't know Until I get there I guess. But this was a very helpful video. I didn't buy a sleeping bag, because frankly there are too many options. the sleeping bag vs Quilt thing. I don't want to buy cheap and it be trash and could've used that cash on a nicer more capable. I'm just getting my feet wet in this "bushcraft" outdoor thing. I need to learn so I know what gear to purchase for my family. I still haven't figured out what I'm going to eat. Gonna try a few MH meals next few days to see if it gives me Bubble guts or not. I pretty much have the stomach of a maggot, so If the dehydrated stuff isn't as bad as turkey spam and Underhill chicken spread I may be ok.

Thank you, its good to know the limitations of gear like this. I setup the swagman roll into sleeping bag mode then zip the foot box closed around the hammock straps. Covered my head quite well and I'm 6'1". Also have left it attached to the hammock and packed them away in tandem. Saved a bit of setup time and space.

Thanks for the great video! I went to bed last night after watching this video and though of ways to add warmth without much weight. A poncho could be added to the outside to reduce air escaping and an emergency blanket could be layered between the Swagman and the poncho. Maybe a second emergency blanket could be added above the Swagman roll. If you're sweating, you aren't freezing!

Another good item for Hammock Camping are the emergency bivy bags not the plastic mylar ones but the ones actually feel like cloth ish poke a hole at the toe Fisher tension line for your hammock through and when you get in yet pull it up like a cocoon blocks airflow all the way around you very very comfy. Bad thing about it though if you had beans for supper there might be a problem
