I usually avoid gear reviews, but i have trust in your style of straight to the point, no gimmicks, "this piece of gear has multiple purposes and deserves it's place in a pack" style of review.... When you say it is good to go, it must be worth it's weight. Thank you.
I ordered one of these from the pathfinder school for Christmas. I was thinking it was going to get here maybe a week after Christmas or so. They surprised me completely and got it out to me by Christmas Eve! Super fast shipping at no extra cost. Super awesome of you guys. Much love! Big fan of everyone at the pathfinder school, you guys do great work.
I've recently bought both of these per your recommendations...Love them! I can't believe how light they are... I'll be putting them to use in the field very soon! Thanks again for your simple AF videos and knowledge!! I'm 52 and have been hunting , camping , and hiking since I was 14! Why I'm just now learning this valuable info is beyond me!! With that said, I refuse to get old and looking forward to retirement in 7 yrs!!
Best YT bushcraft channel by far. I’ve learned how to use a map and compass better than so many books. I’ve seen so many shelter builds and knots. I have to practice the knots but holy hell have I gone from goober to champ in just a few hours.
Very good. Since seeing this presentation several months ago, I purchased one of these. Very impressive. Light, warm, roomy and compact compared to a full size sleeping bag or wool blanket. Now a part of my day hike/emergency survival/ inconvenient camping gear.Thank you very much
Mine just arrived. It is SWEET!!! Got the poncho coming too. Thanks for tuning me into this. Going to be part of my archery elk hunting loadout. Oohrah!
These both really look like great pieces of gear. Really appreciate the closeups of the items as you go through the steps of review. I don't know of anyone else who does that, and it makes things so much easier to understand... Well done as usual.
I just want to thank you for showing me bankline, so much ideas popped into my head since I saw you using it for everything. Thanks again for giving me the motivation to get out there and try things in the woods, seeing how easy you make it with minimal survival gear gives me the strength to test my limits
Just ordered my Swagman and cordage, I'm looking forward to having it in my kit! There was no way to comment during the purchasing process that the Corporal sent me, but I hope you do get a percentage of sales
These are available right now for those interested. Just ordered mine! Honestly, when I first saw this video, I was sold on it. I just couldn't get it at the time because it was sold out. They now have more color/camo options. Thanks Corporal!
A swagman was more of a hobo that walked the outback looking for work on sheep stations and farms. They carried a "Swag" sometimes known as a "Matilda" with all of their earthly possessions rolled up inside. A bit like a Confederate Soldier's Bedroll. The USMC's 1st Marine Division adopted the song "Waltzing Matilda" from its time spent in Australia during WW2. "Waltzing a Matilda" is basically slang for a swagman walking from property to property looking for itinerant work.
I’ve been looking for your channel for months trying to remember how you used to tie truckers hitches. I’m so glad I found you again so I could subscribe. Cheers.
I was just watching one of your old videos, not that old, December, about your EDC and I just wanted to say that when I go to the dentist he always gives me one of those little dispensers of floss and I always toss those in my EDC. Yhey take up no room, add no weight, and they're perfect for whipping rope ends, sewing, trip lines, all different other uses where a very small strong line would be necessary or helpful. You present great stuff.
CPL, You sold me on the SWAGMAN. Also you are an artist with your tarp/poncho configurations. I’ve been a longtime lurker on your channel, but subbed today finally because of your attention to detail and military style of instruction (my favorite part. Very nostalgic). Thank you for your great videos of sharing your adventures, tutorials, product reviews, and wisdom.
Once I saw that video about a year ago I bought Swagman Roll straight away and it was the best buy after a great advertising! Thank you. 100% tested and recommended item! Multifunctionality is worth the price!
Good review. Multi-function and very lightweight. Beyond bushcraft, I think these would be great for thru-hikers, etc. And imagine these being distributed by Red Cross during disasters instead of simple blankets along with a Corporal's Ridgeline system. FYI ... I reached out to Helikon to see about a Swagman in multicam black on a side / hi-vis orange on the other. Combo urban grey-man / search & rescue. Coupled with a woodland camo pattern poncho, you'd have 3 of 5 major scenarios / environments covered (not desert or snow). No plans at present but they passed it on to R&D for consideration.
Yeah but think about all the mediocre or low budget gear you would of bought had you not watched these videos and learned about this tried and tested high quality gear
Thanks for clarifying what a Swagman was, big part of Australian history and tradition, might want to look up some of the traditional Aussie bush kit like swags, many versions now out there but look for and research the originals style swags, also an awesome piece of kit if you can get your hands on one is the original style oilskin" Drizabone" stockmans coat. Cheers, keep the vids coming
I know this is an old video, but I thinking of trying to integrate an all in one system for 3, I know it's gonna be hard thats one reason why I'm going to try, and alot of the things I see you do really inspire me, thank you sir
corporal i am from the city. and i have bushcraft experience at all. i have learned a lot from your videos. i have recently retired and i am trying to learn something new. thank you. an old head back in the day that was a retired corporal told me(if tou dont know find the nearest corporal he will have all of your answers) you show that in every video. keep doing what you are doing.
I've watched this a few times and you constantly mention the swagman... I'm sold. It's going to be my next big purchase and I'll go through your influencer page when I do. Great job, Corporal... as usual.
Just when we think we have seen everthing we can't live without, the Jarhead comes up with another great-can't live without it item. Well demonstrated, ordering mine a few moments.Bless the Corona virus-I can spend hours on the computer watching You Tube, especially the Corporal, Dave Canteburyand The Grey One. This old Warrior is still learning thanks to you gents.
You can tell when someone is pushing a product because they're getting paid and when someone genuinely likes the product. You are the later of the 2 and it's refreshing to see someone give an honest review on a great product.
Swagman, used round the campfire in freezing temps, also as a insulated lid for on top of the hammock whilst in my artic bag and underquilt under the tarp, was toastie... It's outstanding
I received my Helikon Swagman Roll and Poncho in four days..amazing! It was shipped from Manchester, England. The camo I received is called Camogrom, a more subdued woodland with a desert flavor if you will :) The quality of both kits is excellent. Both arrived in well made stuff sacks, the poncho in a Camogrom and the roll in an OD green one. To me the $153 is money more than well spent. I packed them in a Savotta Jaakari S or MiniJaakari pack from Finland (a superb 20L pack) with plenty of room for the rest of my gear (plus food and water) allowing me at least two days out. The other item I purchased was a 500ml Grayl water purifier you and Josh both reviewed. This, too, was money well spent ($55 for the 500ml and $85 for the 550ml version. Both items, the Swagman Roll and poncho, were neatly folded in their respective stuff sacks. When I removed the Swagman Roll it "ballooned" into a huge size and I worried that it would not go back into the stuff sack easily. I zipped it up into its sleeping bag configuration and shoved it back into the sack with ease. Thank you, sir, for the video and recommendation. Man, I think my bushcraft kit is complete!
Im from Poland, 80% of my stuff is from helikon but that poncho dont get that much of my attention .. till now. Thanks for review. Now I need to get one! Dobra robota Helikon!
was going to get a good expensive tarp and sleep system, but I'm thinking this swagman roll poncho and liner would be better suited for my immediate emergency needs.
I like this H-T swagman setup. Most their gear is outstanding. But it’s a bit pricy for most people especially in this economy. I washed my wooby with NixWax DWR and added gypsy studs to it so it snaps together with my poncho as well as a cut a slit in the middle with a stealth zipper to wear under the poncho. Thank you UA-cam for all the tips and tricks! 👍🏽
Sorry, I can't say the same about their BDU pants. Good old American issued lasted me for 3-5 years. Helikon - I feel lucky when they last for one year :( + all the buttons fall off after several months. So you better carry a needle and thread with ya all times. I wish I could say something better about my fellows from Poland... byt I just can't :( Whatever I buy from Helikon or Mil-tec it turns out to be a piece of crap.
I like that in the first 5 seconds you demonstrate the most important feature. Nice work on this video, was unsure about this item, going to get it now!
Maybe the most valuable piece of kit I've purchased. Excellent recommendation. Took forever to get shipped but damn worth every second I waited. Mandatory kit for serious users. This is the way!!!! Thanks for all your research 👍
I have a Helikon Tex poncho, whilst being completely waterproof, it's NOT breathable. I can imagine being wrapped up in the liner and the poncho as a sleep system would be a recipe for a lot of condensation, especially as the liner is nylon treated with a DWR water repellency. Good video, thanks
Woure very much correct. tried it yesterday- woke up damp and cold at 4AM. So i put summer sleeping bag over it to finish my sleep. In the morning there were wite a lot of water(sweat) inside...
The problem with DWR is that it'll wear off sooner or later, either that or you'll need to wash it, and then you have to re-apply it yourself. I don't know if it's just me but that just never seems to work nearly as well as the factory appliction and by the time you actually end up in a prolonged downpour it's gone or half gone and you end up soaked anyway. So nice in that it'll keep you dry in the odd shower but make sure to put on your actual poncho when the rain actually hits.
I just realized. in the sleeping bag mode I can sandwitch a Costco quilt between the poncho and the swagman for added loft. that's only a $20 way to survive with flexibility. you could also use pine needles or oak leaves as Daniel Boone would have done.
I absolutely love my Helikon Swagman! They rock! They are very useful in many different roles. Helikon Urban line are my favorite pants also. Plus they make the most comfortable hats, they are my favorite hats, and I have worn so many different brands, I can't even start to name them all. Thanks for the video.
So I'm in pouring rain, wearing my Swagman Poncho and I have to stop and make shelter for the night. Now I have to take off the only rain protection that I am wearing in order to make an overhead shelter out of it. What happens to me? ... I get soaked in rain doing it. My train of thought is never have one option... my carried shelter (tarp, etc) should be my shelter. My poncho should be my poncho. I believe that should be the norm. Who doesn't carry a tarp these days? In 23 years in the military, I never used my poncho for anything other than worn over my body for rain protection, or perhaps sometimes as a ground cloth inside a pup tent, if expecting rain in the night. If I had to stop in the rain and sleep in it (leaning against a tree)... fine, and that was done many times; but I didn't take it off to make a tarp out of it in the driving rain. And we used our woobies inside our sleeping bags... that WAS it's purpose, at least for me and my buddies it was... oh the comfort of a soft woobie inside the bag! You know what I'm talking about!!! One other thing I'm seeing is perhaps a restriction of movement of the arms when connecting that buckle (as a "jacket")? I'd like to see how much actual movement is available when that is done. Doesn't appear too promising. Now then... one thing I really like is this Poncho itself. Do you know how hard it is to get an actual military issue poncho these days? Nearly impossible... you can get Rothco and other brands that "mimic" the issued ponchos, but hard to find the real thing. This poncho is probably the closest to the actual as one will find. Big plus there, and I plan on getting one or two. And yes, I still do have 2 issued ponchos (both woodland pattern), and two issued woobies... considered some of best things I came out of the military with in-hand. Thanks Corporal... carry on. Love the videos!
But if you have a poncho and a swagman roll, then you take off your poncho for shelter setup, and you still have a swagman roll on you to resist pouring water as shown in the video?
@@polniypridumok In the Spring/Summer? why would you have a poncho liner in the Spring/Summer? I'm only taking about only having one option... a poncho that can be used as a primary shelter, or carrying both... a poncho to keep you dry as you move, and a separate tarp for a shelter.
idk if my input is worth anything but regarding the issue of maneuverability with the poncho buckled, you can get the same results by simply wearing a belt and running only the front flap of the poncho underneath it, leaving the rear flap over it. This leaves the arms free to move
8:05 That’s a nice survival smoking jacket you got there lol I like my Helikon gear, awesome multi-purpose gear that’s well made and well priced as well. Thanks for all the great videos and the great class last weekend!
I like the swagman...great waterproof demo....plenty of pocket space...not so great looking as a jacket (from behind), but it doesn't matter if it is raining!! Thanks sir.
Thanks Corporal, your review sold one to me. I love it so far (unboxed both roll and poncho) and next is test when the weather loses the snow. haha ! THANKS !
All DWR coated clothing must be retreated periodically, the water beading will not last forever... Not sure if you mentioned this in your video, perhaps i missed it, but retreatedperiodically, will do the trick for years.
This is exactly what I remember ( just cannot find my old GI version Woobie and Poncho =( Looks like a great replacement that is updated =) Love the chest pouch for maps and papers ... great idea and can make a light weight sleep Summer bag =) They are a bit pricey but worth the difference over the commercial stuff out there to replace the older GI one and the real Woobies are expensive and well worn 8-) Thanks for sharing =)
I was researching the poncho to replace my heavy current option thought I was halving the weight then I seen how good the swagman roll attachment is. Now I need to adjust a few things to compensate the extra weight. Thanks great review
I got this enormous Turkish poncho for peanuts from Sportsmans Guide, and I will try to modify it to do what the Swagman Roll does. Converting to a coat is especially good since ponchos catch on everything.
Great review as always Corporal! Definitely interested in this product. I really wish I would have snagged my GI poncho and liner when I left the Army. I havent been satisfied by hardly any of the civilian products. Then again, I wasn't expecting to miss being in the field so much.
I never saw the point of poncho liners when I was in the military. But I ordered an ACU poncho liner for like $10 on ebay the other month. I've definitely come around to them. But now I want one of these, it ACTUALLY lines the poncho.
The problem with the coat configuration is that is it severely limits arm movement, so you can't save yourself from a fall or do any camp tasks etc. I have a modified woobie with a poncho slit for my head to go through. I also added some press studs along the long edges. I bring the long edged together down the centre which leaves another head slit at crossing the one in the middle. So this is now a 1/2 width double layer strip with each laying having the head slits crossing each other so there is at least 1 layer right around the neck with no gaps. When you put this on, it is worn as a tabard. Put a belt around so the 4 layers all overlap at the sides of the waist. This closes the arm hole but permits full and unrestricted arm movement because the garment only extends a few inched further beyond the shoulder. For wet weather, I use and ordinary rain jacket and a heavy duty garbage bag with the bottom cut out wo form a skirt that covers the lower part of the tabard. This also keeps most of my trousers dry as well. I think it's a better arrangement for freedom of movement but obviously not going to cope with immersion. But then, if you fell in the water wearing your poncho, I doubt you would be able to swim at all well, you may well drown trying to get it off to enable swimming. Interesting product though, I wasn't aware of it at all till today.
Thanks for all the great videos you have been putting out, This video has been the most informative on the Swagman Roll that I've seen. I just purchased it and Helikon US Poncho as well.
I don’t often go for kit reviews, but after your last lesson using the Swagman Roll, I kept an eye out for this one. Great review! I’ll be adding this to my personal kit soon. Thanks.
The Swagman Ranger Roll. Love it. Loved it so much I bought an extra one for domestic applications. However, my wife doesn't love it so much when I use it for the bedroom. Semper Fi my fellow Belleau Woodsman!!
David A. Sauber if you like this style you should check out an Irish singer called Enya and particularly her album for the soundtrack to a tv series called Robin of Sherwood.
Awesome review and product. I did happen to see one very minor con to the swagman roll poncho, i noticed when you did the water test the zipper fabric got rather dark/wet quickly, i fear that in heavy rain you might find yourself with a pocket filling with water. this can be good or bad dependong on what items you may have in there at the time. This is by no means a bash to the swagman roll, it's just a smiple observation. I believe a zipper lip/cover like they put on tents/tentflys would rectify this. Once again Corporal great review i would highly consider getting both products in conjunction for myself.
Finally ordered one in adaptive green. Hopefully the poncho will be back in stock on the Helikon website soon to go with it. I've got my steel Nalgene right here on my desk to boot.
I’m in love with Helikon Tex gear. Just my opinion they should’ve appointed you as their ambassador over Mr. Canterbury. Thanks for another great video Corporal. Cheers from Northern Alberta, Canada
I just spent like 45 minutes trying to find your videos after watching your stuff earlier today on a different computer. obviously I need to subscribe to your channel, lol whew im back in true survival learning,,,nice !!!!!
Totally awesome set up corporal! That's definitely on my wishlist, lightweight and very durable!!! Has me sold brother! Thanks for another awesome video and a great review of an outstanding AF product!!!
Had the Swagman roll for some time now and love it. My only criticism is the size in sleeping bag mode. I'm broad across the chest and shoulders and can't zip it up with my arms inside.
Swagman is probably the best thing iv'e bought in my life.I'm using it several times a year mostly as a underquilt(tho im using it as a blanket and a poncho aswell) as me and my crew are sleeping in hammocs.I got both versions of it,basic one is still very good piece of gear but much cheaper.

Corporal is a no BS instructor and I've learned more from him in a year than from anyone else all my life!
he poured water over himself like that was gonna simulate what, walking for an hour in heavy rain..?
Would you rather watch a video of a fabric item get rained on for an hour?

I have a Helikon Tex poncho, whilst being completely waterproof, it's NOT breathable. I can imagine being wrapped up in the liner and the poncho as a sleep system would be a recipe for a lot of condensation, especially as the liner is nylon treated with a DWR water repellency.
Good video, thanks
Woure very much correct. tried it yesterday- woke up damp and cold at 4AM. So i put summer sleeping bag over it to finish my sleep. In the morning there were wite a lot of water(sweat) inside...
My old poncho and poncho liner had snaps, maybe that was because I was in the AF lol! It saved me in JRTC and other cold nights!!
I tried amazon for the pun o and the swagman roll
The problem with DWR is that it'll wear off sooner or later, either that or you'll need to wash it, and then you have to re-apply it yourself. I don't know if it's just me but that just never seems to work nearly as well as the factory appliction and by the time you actually end up in a prolonged downpour it's gone or half gone and you end up soaked anyway. So nice in that it'll keep you dry in the odd shower but make sure to put on your actual poncho when the rain actually hits.
Appreciate all of your videos. I seek wisdom on outdoor endeavors and you provide great advice and wisdom. I learn every time I watch.
I was impressed when you had this in your prior video. Now, I like it even more. Thank you!
Everything they make is always squared away. It’s always made so well and with great care and the features always work great.
I now have the Swagman Roll and I love it!! Used it for a week in the Sierra mountains.
heavily impressed every time I watch your vids! sold!
Now that is a nice bit of civi kit at last a good quality poncho and liner....I'm sold on it too 👍
I bought both the swagman and poncho, they are outstanding just like you said. Thanks again for helping me pick the best gear.
8:05 That’s a nice survival smoking jacket you got there lol I like my Helikon gear, awesome multi-purpose gear that’s well made and well priced as well. Thanks for all the great videos and the great class last weekend!
That medevil instrumental towards the end always vibes well.
Really really like your shows makes me humble peace and blessing to you
One helluva system, I love the woodland version, I have a USGI M81 poncho, I wouldn't mind getting the swag man roll in the same pattern.
I use mine for everything but I wish the hood was bigger
Great follow up to your last video. This is what we need. More functional, no nonsense gear reviews. Thanks
Ill stick with my Mil-tec poncho for now but that swagman roll poncho might be just what I needed for my cover system. Thanks for sharing.
Thomas Grant I like my mil tec poncho too. 👍
Hope my wife orders me a poncho liner for Christmas or something tho, this new swagman deal seems pretty legit for work, woods, work in the woods, etc
A definite MUST HAVE ..only do they make a pair of lowers..for your bottom half ..if not they should n I'll still get but would really like a set...
Great vid as always.
Awesome Irish music! I was waiting for Frodo to show up and endorse the poncho liner!
David A. Sauber if you like this style you should check out an Irish singer called Enya and particularly her album for the soundtrack to a tv series called Robin of Sherwood.
@@bugler75 Thanks! I'll check it out.
lol i made my own out of a poly/cotton waterproof poncho, I sewed zips on it with nylon tabs on the corners. Now its a poncho, bivy and a tarp.
Soon as I get the cash I'm getting the swagman. Awesome piece of gear.
$179 bones!...dang!
Thanks Corporal, I needed another poncho liner like another hole in the head, but, I ordered one anyway. Great review, and another great video.
Cool. Climashield is what Wiggy makes Lamilite out of.
Finally ordered one in adaptive green. Hopefully the poncho will be back in stock on the Helikon website soon to go with it. I've got my steel Nalgene right here on my desk to boot.
Thank you for reviewing and sharing this with us, have been curious about this item for a while now and was waiting for such a review.
Looks like a fine and essential item to use.
Corp , smile once in a while. Excellent content.
I’m in love with Helikon Tex gear. Just my opinion they should’ve appointed you as their ambassador over Mr. Canterbury.
Thanks for another great video Corporal.
Cheers from Northern Alberta, Canada
nope he does a better job. Thanks for watching
I just spent like 45 minutes trying to find your videos after watching your stuff earlier today on a different computer. obviously I need to subscribe to your channel, lol whew im back in true survival learning,,,nice !!!!!
You need to take a look at Wilderness innovations storm shield it's right up your alley
Hola, como siempre algo nuevo y muy interesante , el liner, es increíble
Totally awesome set up corporal! That's definitely on my wishlist, lightweight and very durable!!! Has me sold brother! Thanks for another awesome video and a great review of an outstanding AF product!!!
Out Standing, you convinced me. Getting my order ready. Have a great rest of your weekend.
Great review, just picked up one of these. Will be nice to go with my helikon poncho, thanks for showing the combination of the two.
Had the Swagman roll for some time now and love it. My only criticism is the size in sleeping bag mode. I'm broad across the chest and shoulders and can't zip it up with my arms inside.
Loved the review; yours are always the best! Looks like Amazon needs to restock ASAP.
thanks for the video! I was on the fence about it but now im going to invest in one.
Makes an awesome water catcher when it's raining
Swagman is probably the best thing iv'e bought in my life.I'm using it several times a year mostly as a underquilt(tho im using it as a blanket and a poncho aswell) as me and my crew are sleeping in hammocs.I got both versions of it,basic one is still very good piece of gear but much cheaper.
Recommended and another vid with outstanding content. Thanks!!
I know what I'm getting for my birthday... haha thanks for the awesome review!
Love it corporal. This one is a gem. I cannot thank you enough for reviewing this poncho. Go gear approved.
Yes, Sir! It's outstanding! Developed in Poland! :-)
@Leslie B one of these words you're learning first in any language. Definitely polish word:-)
