Once upon a time, in the faraway kingdom of Silverland, a princess named Sapphire was born. Thanks to the prank of a mischievous little angel, Sapphire ended up with both the blue heart of a boy and the pink heart of a girl. Thus, the new little princess would be as rambunctious and brave as she was gentle and caring.
However, all was not well in Silverland. By law, only a son could inherit the throne. So, to stop the evil Duke Duralumon from being next in line to rule the kingdom, the King announced to his subjects that Sapphire was a boy!
Now, several years later, everyone in the kingdom sees Sapphire as a swashbuckling prince. Very few people know her secret. But the Duke still lurks in the shadows, waiting for a chance to make his move... So begins the story of Sapphire - the courageous Princess Knight -- as she fends off the Duke's wicked schemes and fights for justice and the happiness of her people!
Princess Knight, also known as Choppy and the Princess, the 52-episode anime is based upon the best-selling comic by legendary manga creator Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion) and features animation from Tezuka’s own Mushi Productions.
It originally aired on Japanese television from 1967 through 1968, and its English-language adaptation was syndicated throughout the United States in the 1970s and 1980s.
In both anime and manga forms, Princess Knight was among the first titles geared specifically toward a shoujo audience. The original comic was serialized in Kodansha’s Shoujo Club anthology magazine, from 1953 through 1956, and its sequel series, Twin Knight, was serialized in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi anthology in 1958. - Розваги

in the original manga, Sapphire was still a human being with the hearts of a boy and girl, but Tezuka took some creative opportunities with the concept. when Sapphire losses her girl heart, she would become a man. when she losses her boy heart, she become a woman. not physical transformation but more personality wise. she could even talk like a man apparently.
Ooh, that's cool. Also--even though it's not a physical transformation? Ranma 1/2, eat your heart out! ;)
I'm also reminded a bit of Princess Ozma of Oz, who was turned into and raised as a boy to hide her until the kingdom became safer. Yep. Transgender queen in a book from over a hundred years ago! Well, kinda. :)

It's interesting how tezuka was both ahead of his time and dated at the same, the person who made a non-binery character in 1953, aslo adopted blackface designs from western cartoons, and while pretty apolitical he's aslo made proto "yiff" before modern furry culture was even a thing.
So they are gender fluid? Surprised they could get away with that in the 60's. It's even controversial today.
I don't know if Tezuka-sensei was progressive enough to realize he was doing it, but he basically created the first trans/nonbinary character in manga and anime. And I think handled it about as well as anyone writing in Japan in the 50's could handle the subject. There's a lot of American writers today that can't do trans characters as well thought-out as Sapphire!
I remember watching this masterpiece when I was a kid. A very unique series, with a strong, beautiful, brave, swordswoman as a protagonist.
She's a child not a woman.

I am disappointed that they took out the part where Choppy was in heaven giving the princess the wrong heart. That is why he is on Earth looking for the princess, to get back that heart. That was my favorite part.

Princess Sapphire resembles a combination of Snow White and Prince Ferdinand, but her hair resembles Betty Boop. Choppy looks like Toon Link from The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker.

I remember this, I was ten when it showed up on our tv channel when there was only 6 or 7 channels at that time. "Of course back then we had to get up to change the channel then adjust the rabbit ears! "WHAT DAYS"

Although she looks more like a musketeer than a knight, she's still awesome at what she does.

This is one of the anime I watched as a kid. The stories and character designs were ok, but the backgrounds and environments were phenomenal!

When I was about 6 years old I thought Princess Knight was the bee's knees. I had Princess Knight stickers all over my stuff and never missed an episode. Her look is so iconic.
How would anyone think she was a boy when she's giggling and sounds like a cross between Dorothy Gale and Mini Mouse? Nothing about her screams that she was raised as a boy. she even crosses her legs when she sits.

Yeah, I'm not normally a "no dubs" kind of person, but this one in particular is very...shall we say, of its era. I couldn't make it four minutes.

Why is it that in every anime where a girl pretends to be a boy, she still looks like a girl but nobody in the story is able to tell?
And the king thought it would be easier to pull this off on his subjects, than simply decree that his daughter will succeed him? Kings can do that, you know.

And besides, the succeeding king, Plastic, revises the law to let the country allow Sapphire to take over the throne.

So yeah... this universe is a bit fuzzy on gender identifiers.

Sapphire changes the laws when she takes the throne! As someone who lives in a monarchy, it’s not so easy, by the way! Monarchs fear the influential families who helped put them into power, if he makes a law they disapprove of (and he is clearly surrounded by people who covet his crown and clearly doubt Sapphire’s gender), they could try to overthrow him with their own armies!
Kings who go ahead and pass laws their most influential noblemen would oppose are usually tyrants who rule through fear of death, so they won’t dare oppose him. Sapphire’s father seems both too gentle and too cautious to do that, so he tries to play by the rules of seemingly keeping popular/entrenched laws while trying to keep the crown safe from Nylon and his ilk.
It not sailor moon the first magical girl, nor sakura cardcaptor and neither was cutie honey. This was the first magical girl anime, created by the legendary osamu tezuka.

Thank you so much, I love Osamu Tezuka’s works (especially Black Jack, Dororo, and Angel’s Hill) and I have always wanted to read (if I can someday buy Vertical’s volumes...!) or watch Princess Knight, but it was always region-blocked.
Her voice is so sweet!! The animated whimsy and visual humour, the Mickey Mousing in the opening, it’s all so charmingly Tezuka.
I was shocked by Choppy (Tink) having such a deep voice, but orherwise... this is all charming and sweet!! Even the cartoony voice acting is kind of familiar and funny, reminds me of watching 60’s Kimba.

Though not as good as Astro Boy, Princess Knight is definitely one of the greatest Anime series of all time
Very pleased to find this after looking for it for over 30 years, since I first watched it on The Children's Channel (UK) in the 1980s. It's more "slapstick" and played for laughs than I remember, though the Queen's sorrow over her daughter's predicament is perhaps more poignant for this.
Anyone else notice the music was credit to Isao Tomita, who later achieved fame in the 70s for his synth arrangements of classical pieces ("Snowflakes Are Dancing")?
For some reason, every anime before the 1980s is wild and unpredictable like this.

I grew up this anime when I was a kid in Spanish Dub I was a fan of Osamu Tezuka's titles. Like Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion and Princess Knight. I love the animation style and the artwork and characters design.
Damn, I loved this when I was a kid. It was so different to anything else I had ever seen. Awesome. Although I believe it was renamed as Choppy and the Princess for the UK.
I remember watching a couple of episodes of "Choppy and the Princess" on The Children's Channel in the UK, in the 1980s. It really stuck in my mind all these years, but until very recently, I wondered if my memory was playing tricks on me 😅
Like in Hoodwinked, Red Riding Hood maybe lovable and pretty in the outside, but in the inside she’s a fighter
She is against tax for luxury, I wonder how many of us was aware of such thing back then, but now as an adult we truly see the great justice she have done.

Wonderful to find this. I vaguely remember watching this from my childhood in the early 70. I'm sure the ending theme was slightly different, though.
Sir Nylon has the best voice ever in this adaptation! Whenever I read the manga I always try to read his dialogue in this voice. :-D
