- Appledore on the Torridge in North Devon | Personal Walk Around Pretty Quayside Village
Appledore is a beautiful little village on the edge of the River Torridge in North Devon. I filmed this 'walk around' so my daughter has some memories of her family who we can trace back to around the 1600s. Her Great, Great Grandfather was Coxwain of the Braunton Lifeboat in the 1860s and 70s and was awarded medals by the RNLI for rescuing the crew of a ship in 1971; he lived on Irsha Street and was also the Grocer.
Family owned many houses in Appledore and along Irsha Street and one of them was even a Master Mariner. I love tracing family history and hearing stories. If you are watching this and have family in Appledore or who were in the past please leave a comment below I would love to hear your stories.

I had some relatives who lived in Irsha street no3 and 5 that got washed away. The pub they had was through the doorway to the left while you were talking about The George. Also has a relatives name on the war memorial just out side the church. Also the pub before you go towards the car park and irsha st, was owned by other more recent relatives,

@@CalliesDiaries we live in Plymouth my dad was from Bideford and it was his family name. My brother( in Bristol) will be the last of this name in his lineage.
@@ThePurleflower That's happened on my daughter's family line, her grandparents line has now gone. They were Smallridges.
@@CalliesDiaries We have traced my family backto1640s and Taddiport. There was a Leper house that housed the minister to Taddiport chapel (which is still there) on the other side of the bridge from Torrington who turned out to be a relative. On golf links road in westward ho! there is a bungalow we’ve known, as a holiday let now, but the owner has put the name plaque on the wall pavement side. It’s a bit eerie to me to see my maiden name but it makes me happy to see Penhorwood so thank you.

@@ThePurleflower Hiya, I know Taddiport as I lived in Torrington for a while. Bloody Corner is literally a bend in the road on the A386 (Churchill Way) to Appledore between North Street and JH Taylor Drive - just before Marshford Camping field. If you look on google maps and zoom in you will see the bend in the road. If you can drop into street view you can see there is a little parking area and a farm road running down the side. You could easily whizz past it in the car and not know it's there - it's located in a wall, it's about 2ft high with metal bars in front of it. I am in North Devon again next week, I will try and video it for you so you can see.

We stayed five fabulous years staying at Appledore . And adore the place, and began to be recognised by the staff at John's. First time we stayed on Meeting Street, the the following four years we rented cottages overlooking the sea/river on Irsha Street. Appledore is a fabulous place to base your visit to North Devon. No visit is complete without trying the fish and chips from Sylvesters! Thank you for your great video, it has brought back so many memories. I cannot wait until I get a chance to come and stay again.

Forgot all about Appledore. I was there as a kid in the early 70s with my parents. Kinda woulda been nice to see some of the shops, businesses etc but nice to watch.
Hi Yogi, there are very few shops in Appledore now, the largest is on the front owned by John's of Instow which is a Deli and Cafe in what used to be the Co-op/Londis and 2 other shops are theirs as well, then a charity shop, gift shop, another cafe on the Quay. Most properties are now either 2nd homes or holiday rentals. We walked and videoed all the roads where the main shops are/once were. There are a couple on Marine Parade that are antique shops. Fish and chip shops on side roads, two pubs down Irsha Street, but sadly that is all. It's certainly changed a great deal over the years. Many thanks for your comments xx

@@ForgottenWinter Oh love borh of those. The whole of the Atlantic Coastline is gorgeous from Devon down to Cornwall. I will have to go and visit more and upload some more movies of the area! Any excuse for me to get down there!
