  • Welcome to Axolotland, a new mountainside village aquarium and habitat for two aquadragons, i.e. axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum). These very unique and cute amphibians, which are closely related to tiger salamanders are pretty interesting creatures. In this video, we watch these two axolotls evolve from strangers to best friends. We also watch how they hunt, forage, relax, and feed. You'll be surprised how intelligent and endearing they are. Hope you like this week's non-ant related (for a change) episode. Enjoy!

Please be careful with them, if they are stressed enough their lives can be shortened. Beautiful narrarating and reconstruction of the 'Axolotl Land' by the way, it certainly looks stunning. • @CrystalWingDesigns
      @CrystalWingDesigns 5 років тому +66

      I'm pretty sure both of them are female. Sexually mature males of this lighter hue have dark toes (I own two of such). The males cloaca is also a lot puffier than females in general (that I own one of). There's no sign of this on either so it's very they are both females. Also not liking how stressed out they look. A clear sign of stress is their gills will curl forward, if they're calm and relaxed, the gills lay back, and maybe slightly curled up for the upper ones.

And I’d say they’re certainly both girls. The set up looks lovely and I’m glad he seems to have upgraded (I didn’t watch the previous video so I’m not sure). I’m sure they will fatten up very quickly with earth worms and pellets! Just be a tad careful with pellets since they can cause constipation in some, but most don’t have issues! I think it would be great if you did a live feeding of them hunting live ghost shrimp!!

      Haven’t watched the rest of the video but so far in the first 5 minutes the only thing he needs to do is remove the light . Light stresses the axolotls out if there on for more than an hour at a time in fact that’s being lenient really it shouldn’t be on at all . I doubt he did too much research because that is one of the more common facts .

      He explains later that the axolotls can adjust to light after a certain period of time, and since they were kept in lit displays before this they're adjusted and comfortable. They come out of their hides, poke their heads out, relax in clear view, etc under the display lights. They're absolutely fine.

    Haven't gone through all the comments, but just wanted to give a few observations...
    1. The tank is way too small for two axolotl's, 70-80 gallons is needed for two.
    2. The pellets having chicken in them is bad as they're stomachs aren't designed to deal with mammalian and avian digestion.
    3. Black sand can be problematic for axolotl's because it is much sharper than natural white sand. This can cause stomach perforations and affect their coats, though in the small amounts you have it could be OK. I wouldn't risk it though.
    4. I'm hoping having a male and female you are prepared to either terminate the eggs if they are not genetically viable, or have a large space for the large amounts of young.
    It does show that you care for them ^_^ so please take this as positive criticism.

  • @teemo7714
    @teemo7714 5 років тому +302

    they're a great couple, but keep in mind that the male may try to breed with the female too often in the future and it will stress the female too much. so its always good to prepare another "time-out" tank for temporary holdings.

      Penelope Sacristan it’s not about being salty it’s about worrying whether the animal breathes properly. You have no choice but to breathe, same as these critters have no choice but to live in toxic environments. The difference here is that it’s clear this guy has aquatic knowledge and has created a system of total recycling nutrients. The question is whether enough time has passed for the nitrogen cycle to complete in the new enclosure.

    Your kindness is unmatched. Because of you, people are starting to value the importance of life whether it is Small or Big. You taking care of the Axolotls is enough contribution to save a little bit of it's diminishing population. Not only that, the way you've nursed your Ants, Spiders, and other exotic and non-exotic pets showed us that Nature is a wonderful and interesting place even if it's both Dangerous and Beneficial to us. We lived in this world only to survive, and not enjoy life in it's fullest. We've been scared of exploring the mysteries of Nature to the point we only valued our own lives. It is our human nature. But, it doesnt mean we cant do both at the same time. We can Survive and Enjoy life at as we explore the mysteries of it and events we haven't been apart of. You are one of the models that today's generation must look upto.
    You placed a mark in this world... And in that mark you've placed, this is what it is stated:
    "Life, no matter how small or big, is still valuable in this world despite all reasons. We humans are important, as even if some of us destroy it, there are also humans that recreates and values it. So, value life, and never be those people who contradicts this purpose."

    Axolotls don’t like flowing water. So make sure whatever you’re using for oxygenation doesn’t create a current. It’s also smart to have a small area in the tank that goes above water. Even though axolotls missed the evolutionary step of becoming a salamander. They do uncommonly seek above water land.

      It was in a comment thread on last weeks' video. I forget the OP's name but he explained his experience with Axolotls and expressed concerns about what was in Axolotl-Land, AC's response was that if he listened to bullies this channel wouldn't exist.
      *Edit* I found the OP's name - Twila Lin. It was in that thread that AC referred to Axolotl owners warning him of the dangers of his set up as bullies.

    I'm glad you work so hard to make great habitats for the creatures in your care and make sure they aren't stressed. I don't have the energy or time to care for something as delicate as an axolotl (or most aquatic creatures) so seeing your videos is great!

      Dank Betsy hey chill, he's saying that because Axolotl originate from the zone of xochimilco in Mexico, and there's a legend close by that could kinda fit. It's an idea only from the origins, Lese is literally not saying there are not a lot of other culture option, he just though the idea fit the theme.
