An Invasive Species Could Be THE END to My Giant Rainforest Vivarium

  • I spotted a species in my giant rainforest vivarium, that could end my whole ecosystem project for good, but the true mystery of its identity required the help of scientists to classify the animal appropriately and determine whether or not the creature was truly a threat to the vivarium and all its creatures within, or if it simply was a false alarm. Hope you enjoy this episode on ant taxonomy and the dangers of invasive species on ecosystems. Special thanks to Dr. Davide General and Perry Buenavente from UPLB National Museum of Natural History Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

For anyone who doesn't know Tetramorium insolens, commonly known as the Singapore ant or tramp ant, is a small, brown to redish ant species known for its adaptability and invasive potential. Worker ants typically measure 3-4 mm, while queens are larger at 6-7 mm. They exhibit a typical ant social structure, with colonies consisting of a queen, workers, and males. These ants are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of food sources, and are highly adaptable to different environments, from natural habitats to urban areas. Their nesting habits include building nests in soil, under stones, or within man-made structures, contributing to their success in human-modified environments. Tetramorium insolens is considered invasive due to its rapid colony growth, aggressive foraging behaviour, and ability to displace native species. It spreads widely through human activity, hitchhiking on plants, soil, and materials, which has allowed it to establish itself in many regions worldwide. The Singapore ant's invasive nature disrupts local ecosystems, outcompeting native ants and impacting the balance of local fauna. Its adaptability, combined with its aggressive behavior, makes it a significant species of concern in many parts of the world. So yes they are indeed invasive

Finding them isn’t the weirdest nor most worrying thing probably as their range does mean they could have eventually made their way to your location via island hopping the natural way at some point.

You don't always see the critters. They can be down in the soil and no amount of washing the leaves will affect them. I found that out when I moved my pineapple plant indoors for the winter. There were some fire ants in it which I didn't see because it was cold outside and they were under the soil. I saw them after sitting in a 70 degree house for a few minutes. Luckily there wasn't many, not even 100, which was very odd. There was no queen which I found out later that day when I repotted the plant. Why so few and why they were in that pot is beyond me. After getting the plant out and cleaning it and repotting it, I put the pot back where it was with the ants still in it. The temps kept dropping through the day and they were still in it early the next morning but it did warm up quite a bit and when I checked later that day they were all gone and never came back. Perhaps went back to the nest or because I had disturbed them and took out a food source, they went elsewhere. No idea.

When you talk about the Weaver ant milking the mealy bug, I can see the tips of the paws of the weaver ant: how cute are those!
    Click Beetles? Time to google!🤓
Unknown beetle with cute feet, gorgious blue eyes (could be the light, but still, in this shot it all matched so nicely) and blue antenae: What a fun surprise.
Centipede baby ball: I've never seen one before, and had no idea the mother cared for them. So much to still google to learn!🤓

I would love to see you add an arachnid alien, like a tailless whip spider, like an Amblypygid, or a Thai Vinegaroon, like Mastigoproctus giganteus. they may be scary-looking but they have so much personality and they are cute in their own way

I think a fully grown male saltwater crocodile would be a great addition to the vivarium

The way old weaver Ants take themselves to a grave point is insane, its a shame they can't die in peace. I do like the weavers. There's something about them I find Indearing about them ❤

semi invasive, their native range is a region over and they could've reasonably island hopped to where Antscanada is set up now
also all notes i can find of their native region is that it's really similar and they're a generally mild species, so non native and debatable on the invasive part
