    just got an auris hybrid, and honestly, regarding the ECVT whining - it's not like you're always flooring it in that car... so 80% of the time when you're driving it comfortably and economically (in the way the car is encouraging you) it's more silent than any other engine that's running through gears.
    I've driven a single car during the last 8 years, a diesel, and honestly, that was encouraging me to floor it and be a hooligan in traffic - even when floored the consumption was negligible. i appreciate the auris hybrid for encouraging me to be a gentleman, it's true, the whining is annoying, that's why you only ask for it when necessary.

  • @sos10
    @sos10 9 років тому +33

    Dear Fifth Gear, this Lexus has no gearbox in the classical sense. Not even a CVT although the system works similar to one. You hear the car rev up a lot when you accelerate fast, but when you don't it is very very very quiet. Strange that you didn't mention that. The bootspace is not reduced because of the batteries but because it has a full size 5th wheel. If you take that out (like in most countries) The boot space results much bigger than most of its direct competitors.

      +SOS10 No gearbox... lol. That's a good one.

    • @sos10
      @sos10 9 років тому +6

      +Grant Goodman It is an E-CVT, a kind of planetary gear box that works similar to a CVT.

    • @sos10
      @sos10 9 років тому +3

      One can assume that Toyota/Lexus after over a decade of experience knows how to program their E-CVT, which works like a CVT only in the sense that there aren't any gears, but is dramatically different in design since it uses no belts or pulleys. That it is not the kind of driving experience you personally look for as a driver, is something else. The ZF 8 speed is a fine box, but it is not compatible with the Toyota/Lexus hybrid drive train if you are looking for the same kind of results the current hybrid drivetrain can offer.

      +SOS10 good point. i like lexus nx and was almost put off by their 'noise in cabin' bla bla. lexus is the best in noise reduction. thanks for the explanation on the e-cvt. fifth gear should know better before judging things like that. they should add more context. instead of just making a statement like that

      +eastwood978 they are not hammering it round a race track, they drive at normal road speeds. The bit where the gearbox was whining was when they were doing 60mph, which again, is a normal road speed.

    • @eastwood978
      @eastwood978 8 років тому +13

      +Commander Turtle They are accelerating like a boy racer at the traffic lights and can hear the engine revving it is nothing to do with the gearbox as it doesnt have a gearbox. The Lexus Hybrid drive is silent except when gunning it. Normal stop start driving on the public road it is silent, normal acceleration speeds, motorway driving it is silent. I drive one every day and it is so nice to be free of diesel rattle. If you want diesel economy but prefer the refinement of a petrol engine Lexus Hybrid drive is an excellent choice.

    The Lexus hybrid drivetrain is obviously not the same as that in a traditional car. A different approach to driving is therefore needed. But once you get used to the way it works you can avoid the 'whining' noise lots of people complain about. The suggestion of sticking a ZF gearbox in it is just stupid and shows a lack of understanding about how the car works.

Hybrids aren't the same, they're made for nice cruising not racing and sporty stuff. I say it's unfair to compare it against BMWs and MBs

    No reviewers like CVT transmissions, so their comments were predictable. They would obviously be happier
    driving a German car.
    I've had three CVT cars and haven't had any problems with them. The NX is all wheel drive not 4 wheel drive,
    so not designed to go off road. If you buy a BMW or Audi equivalent, be prepared to be spending a lot of time
    in your dealers courtesy car.

    • @nbroadsman

      No they just don't understand it. It is a super sophisticated very clever, and very reliable, e-CVT which uses no belts or pulleys like older CVT and effectively has an infinite number of seamlessly selected gear ratios and can use any combination of iC engine, electric motor(s) only or IC and electric motors as required. It runs, and holds, the extremely efficient Atkinson cycle IC engine at the most efficient revs for power/torque when called on to accelerate hard (which for most people would never be more than 9 or 10 seconds at a time) then dials the revs right back for very quiet cruising at low revs once at higher motorway speeds. This is a very interesting video explaining the ingenious way it works ua-cam.com/video/O61WihMRdjM/v-deo.html

      The super sophisticated and extremely clever e-CVT is why I Do have a Lexus NX 300h. It cruises at very low and relaxing revs at high motorway speeds. Unfortunately it seems most reviewers cut and paste the same nonsense about CVT (mainly wrongly associating the Lexus e-CVT with the older, less reliable, belt powered style CVT) and don't seem to understand how to drive it or the efficiency of the e-CVT coupled with using the peak efficiency of the very efficient Atkinson cycle IC engine (plus electric motors) during hard acceleration. This video explains the genius behind it ua-cam.com/video/O61WihMRdjM/v-deo.html

      I had a Skoda Yeti for several years which I really liked. Just traded it in for a Lexus NX 300h and the Lexus is at another level and the super sophisticated and very ingenious e-CVT is brilliant if you understand it - Just seems that most reviewers repeat the same old CVT nonsense about it. Once cruising at high motorway speeds the e-cvt winds the revs down extremely low so it is a very relaxed cruiser - and very easy to go faster than you ought to if you don't use the radar cruise control or keep an eye on the speedometer as it cruises so effortlessly. In traffic jams it will often silently hum along using only the electric motor and the radar cruise control will actually stop and start the car to follow the traffic without you having to touch the pedals. Watch this video if you want to know how the e-cvt really works and how very clever it actually is. Of course if you just want to hoon about all of the time then you have missed the point and the Lexus may not be the car for you ua-cam.com/video/O61WihMRdjM/v-deo.html

    This urban "SUV", the Lexus NX300h, is no more than a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (both mount the same engines and give same horsepower) but heavier (its weight adds 285 pounds to the TAV4), with a lower safety scores (at EuroNCAP, at the IIHS and at the NHTSA), less off road capable (it has a worse attack angle than the RAV4), with a worse acceleration (one more second than the RAV4 to reach 60 mph) and far more expensive than the RAV4 even with far fewer accesories or extras.

      Exactly, if someone buys a hybrid it's clear they won't be racing with it on a track lol so I don't know what he was whining about lol :/

      Wasnt arguing in the first place, was merely stating that fifth gear is a prog that favours German cars over any other make, It was demoted to a lowly satellite channel for such low ratings.

      How about because they are efficient and reliable? I drive a GS 450h which has essentially the same planetary gear system. It is SMOOTH and in normal use, very silent. When doing 60mph you can still have a whispered conversation. It does 0-60 in under 6 seconds, top speed is 155 mph and yet it still achieves 40 mpg on the motorway. The only things I don't like is that the infotainment system is clumsy and outdated, and I'd prefer a bigger boot.

Does it even sell? i hope you know the Lexus Rx is the world's highest selling Luxury SUV by a mile? the NX just came out watch as it blows the competition away again in sales.
