I have the Scaper 60, so the filter is the same. I've modified mine with some speedfit pipe to pull the water down to the bottom of the filter box and then it will push up through lava rock and filter pads of increasing density before it flows out. I'll be setting it up as a Marine Invertebrate tank. I chucked the cartridges out, the only bit i kept was the black flexible 90 degree piece.
It's pretty simple and almost free to mod the filter and make it shrimp safe. You could block the intakes and put a sponge on the bottom one so shrimp don't get in :)
Will the cartridges that house the sponge inside the filter fit on the end of the pipe when you remove the skimmer etc? You could undo the cartridge (with some difficulty probably) and replace with foam and then put media inside the filter and polishing foam etc where the cartridges were designed to live. It can be pimped for better filter action and to make it nano fish and shrimp safe. I might get one for my little shrimps and if I can’t pimp my filter I’ll get them a sponge one but it’s a great price for a good looking tank. Thanks for the review 👍🏻
Got the 5.5 gallon super fish tank to put a Betta and small fish any tips for keeping the small ones safe from the hole you mentioned? These are my first fish so I don’t really no much except you need at least 5 gallons for a Betta
Hi I am new to all this so this tank really appeals! Your review is so informative thank you. Could you just confirm that it is possible to replace the cartridges with some filter foam instead? Is this easy to do and is there a type/brand you'd recommend? I'm literally clueless sorry!
Hey. Its a lovely tank and well worth the purchase, I'm certainly glad I bought mine :D Yes the cartridges are very easy to remove and use filter foam instead, they are held in place by a piece of push-fit rubber pipe. Both cartridges can just be removed and the cavity filled with a big piece of foam. I use cheapy Powkoo filter media foam (coarse -30ppi) (which I got from Amazon), it works a treat and keeps the water nice and clear.
Hey buying this tank. Thanks for the great review. Didnt find anyone else talking about the incompatibility of the piping whe. Removing the skimmer which is a shame but i am hacking it up anyway when i get it so an additional pipe wont be a big deal. Does anyone have the pipe diameter?
If somebody weren't afraid of a little DIY I'll bet you could deconstruct the filter cartridges and make them user serviceable. That is if somebody hasn't come up with a 3D printed alternative for that same reason.
I brought a Tidal 55 hob filter and I'm coverted. Really like them. So that filter you have I could live with. I would customize it myself. A big draw back to that aquarium starter kit is the light for me. You cannot control the light power. Also you cannot raise the light if it is to strong. I'm a big fan of the Fluval plant nano Bluetooth. You can raise the light or extend it. You can control the power plus other funtions. Not cheap though. This must be your 4th aquarium Lauren? Can you do a scaping video of it?
Great review, thank you. I was looking at one of these today, and the filter put me off.
This review was exactly what I was looking for. This tank is the one for me. The filter isn't but OH WELL.

Great review, been interested in the Scaper series - but looks like the filter and the "dimmable" on/off light is a drawback - love your content btw!

👏 thank you
Those cartridges look like you can just cut the bottoms off and slide regular filter foams in place
HI how did you put the backing on did you use tape or did you peel the white of the black and then stick on cheers
How do you attach the back ground
Good old cellotape in the corners :) Im not too fussed about how the edges of my tanks look as I can never see them on the shelving.
Are you gona do an update video
Hey! I will but not for another couple of months as I'm still tinkering with it, once it has settled i can get some filming done :)
@@tinymenagerie I’m look at getting the same tank upgrading my betta also is the hight 45 or the length?
They have one of these set up at my local pet shop and it looks really nice. A shame it comes with one of those awful american style filters though.

You just pry the side off and replace the media
@@vinizzlevinizzle6131 Oh nice well that makes things easy.
Why don't they just throw in a heater. They never do.
Because you don't necessarily need one, it depends on the livestock and your room temperature
nice tank from MADREEFER fellow youtuber , liked and subscribed to help support your channel
Thanks Mad Reefer!
