    Its been 49 years since I've lived in my native Durham, North Carolina. I see many of the neighborhoods in the Bull City are still without street lights and sidewalks. Sending a shout out to the Durham High and Hillside classes of 1973. I attended Whitted Junior High school with many classmates at those schools in the late 60's up into 1970. I am now a resident living in New York City for almost 50 years. I no longer recognize my native Durham when I come home. Many of my childhood friends and classmates are dead or have moved away like me over the years.

    Some people have been saying this is a dangerous place to live. Is that true and is it costly?

    • @lindenchasteen
      @lindenchasteen  2 роки тому +1

      In my opinion, it's not dangerous. Everyone will have a different experience but I've lived here all my life and have never had any problems. Just use common sense and you'll be ok.

    Does anyone know if the 21c art museum exhibit is free? Like do we have to pay for tickets to see the art or can we just walk in and look around?

    Sure. Durham's great if you lived in the suburbs all your life. Oh and if you can afford it. That's really important.
    Otherwise this place is absolute trash. I can say that. Born and raised there for 30 plus years. Homelessness on the rise. Cost of living going up. Average 1 bedroom can cost you a grand. If your lucky.
    That place has a lot of hidden problems people don't see or pretend doesn't exist since it doesn't hurt their lifestyle.

    • @lindenchasteen
      @lindenchasteen  Рік тому

      Of course there are problems but I would argue the city has way more good than bad.

    The places you mentioned in your video are welcoming to you due to your white privilege. When I was born in 1955 at Duke Hospital in the colored section and growing up in Durham, Durham was a racist and segregated city. Desegregation was forced in the Bull City in 1970 and I was forced to attend the mostly white Durham High School, graduating in 1973. Many blacks like myself left Durham for other cities up North or elsewhere for better opportunities and education. Durham has changed over the years and its been gentrified. When I visit home, I no longer recognize Durham and I get lost on some city streets. At 66 years old and recently retired, I considered moving back to the Bull City. Since my grandmother, mother, aunts, and uncles deaths in Durham, I no longer have a reason to move back home. My family members are buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Durham. I have decided to stay here in NYC (Manhattan) and I will be buried here. Thank you for making this lovely video of my native Durham, North Carolina. I want to send a shout out to the 1973 Durham High and Hillside High classes. I attended Whitted Junior High School with many of the people in those high school classes.
