Duke St. and I’m excited to see how the rebuilding is going after the coffee shop exploded while I was in high school just a block away Edit my high school is at 5:00
Great job on the tour of Durham. I haven’t been back since 2019. I saw some new updates on the tour. That’s my hometown i grew up in. So many memories comeback to me. Thank you for making this.
I too haven't visited my hometown since 2019. When I was there in May and July 2019 to attend my last 2 aunts funerals, Alston Avenue was under construction and blocked off at Holloway Street. I heard it is now opened and looks nice with several lanes going past North Carolina Central University.
Hi, this is my hometown! But I don't live downtown, I live a good 6-8 miles north. That building at 4:39 in the background with the blue awning, my dad used to work there when it was owned by a different group. He had to leave after the business shut down, but now he's a bit too old to be working there, even though the new place serves the same purpose
Thanks for explaining everything that you were driving by. I'm thinking of moving to N.C and having a tour with explanation is so incredibly helpful and fun to watch.
I come from the projects that used to be on Fayetteville street. Durham will always be home. It’s a very interesting place to see top universities and gentrification and yet still a lot of violence.
@@NickJohnson I've been both of them cities. Both of them downtown is nice. Also Winston-Salem help build Charlotte too because wachovia headquarters in Winston-Salem before merge to First Union and move their to Charlotte and also BB&T Bank was headquarters in Winston-Salem. Dang you drove right past the gas explosion site. I moved to Burlington a year ago and downtown looks so different! My kids played little league at the old bulls stadium. Makes want to move back to Durham!!!
Very relaxing video and nice scenery too. The crime statistics years ago were surprising to me for Durham, but I can tell that by the newer architecture that parts of the city went through a revitalization program. Definitely inland NC is on my bucket list for a vacation. Wilmington and several of the shore points were the areas I have visited. Same holds true for me in SC, where I have only been to Garden City and the Myrtle Beaches. In Virginia, I have seen the majority of the state, mostly by bicycle. Great video Nick, hope you can get to Asheville which I have never visited.
It’s interesting to see the city this way. I’ve been to Durham more times than I know. I live about an hour north, near the Virginia border. My dad got his MDiv from Duke.
Nick, I lived in Edgemont in East Durham as a boy. I left Durham and the state in 1957. They tell me that I would not recognize the area now. Thanks for the video. I subscribed.
I haven't stopped in a lot of places in North Carolina, but I did enjoy Franklin. They have a number of ruby mines to test your luck at. Durham looks nice, too.
@@NickJohnson Yes, I think it's fun. A messy experience due to the dirt, water trough, and all the scrubbing and sifting you do, but when you find a ruby amongst a bunch of pebbles and mud, you get immediate satisfaction. If big enough, they'll cut and polish the stone to be set in jewelry. Hard to get truly large ones, but you never know...
I hate that people use the homeless population as a downside of a city. There’s still people and shouldn’t be looked at as a burden. LA has one of the biggest homeless populations in the world and people still love moving there.
The "regular" street people one encounters in Downtown Durham aren't homeless. They live in the nearby projects and walk to downtown. They receive public assistance. As far as panhandling goes Downtown, while annoying, the regulars are pretty tame. I've seen much much worse and more aggressiveness in other cities. The area can be dangerous after midnight. You will hear gunshots several times a week.
I live in Durham. It started calming down about fifteen years ago. The shootings started back three years ago. Six people were shot in this town, week before last.

I think you should do these videos on the native folks in these cities to truly highlight what the town at least use to be like. The historical foundation and character of these places not the 90% transplant heavy influence.
This a nice video of the Bull City. Its been 49 years since I've lived in my native Durham, North Carolina. Durham has been gentrified like many large and small cities. Many of the neighborhoods in the Bull City are still without street lights and sidewalks and it is still a segregated city between blacks and whites as it was 66 years ago when I was born. There were no Mexicans or Central Americans living in the Bull City when I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Many traditional black middle class Durham neighborhoods are now barrios displacing native black Durhamites. Sending a shout out to the Durham High and Hillside classes of 1973. I attended Whitted Junior High school with many classmates at those schools in the late 60's up into 1970. I am now a resident living in New York City (Manhattan) for almost 50 years. I no longer recognize my native Durham when I come home. Many of my childhood friends and classmates are dead or have moved away like me over the years. 😢 😭
Bro' it's all about a place with low crime, morals, great places to raise a family and where people don't judge you by your skin color..White or Black and definitely not on your politics even if you voted Trump or Obama, because those people that hate another over that are mental..
Seriously! This is the South. As a whole Durham mites don't talk about those types of things in polite company. But it's still there. If it wasn't he wouldn't have had to make a fact about the fact that you used to be bad places in Durham and but it's now getting better. And termites who lived here forever wouldn't have problems with gentrification right now.
I'm a native Chicagoan. It's too expensive. High taxes (you will be taxed to death). It's very crowded, corrupted and segregated. Plus we have high crime and homelessness and high cases of Covid-19. Just warning you.
most peoole when they hear durham nc they think "oh that's in the country" "they dont know if they want to be like the city or the country" but when u live here (like me) its all the same and we are jot country we just have the stereotype but we love it down here and the weather might get u sometimes and the accent but thats what makes us North Carolinian
Perhaps I think it’s more complex than that he just like every developer and political hack they want a perfect picture of Durham I mean hell let’s face it Durham is a vacant desert with a substantial number of people thriving in it and simply put they want to turn it into a bigger place where more “money” can be made and we all know more money more problems if it’s more problems for people that make more money what does that mean for my little hometown of Durham

Welcome to Durham NC, "Home of the entrance wound". No one knows how bad the crime rate is because Durham doesn't release its statistics....that means that it's crime free...….right?...….right?
Durham downtown is doing good demolishing the old houses and building new ones and bringing nice people to the area, before all that changes was scary to even walk there
I used to think that gentrification was a good thing. Then I went to these historic areas and saw stores that are in every mall and every crappy sprawling city in America. A Starbucks on every corner. A North Face store. An Aeropostale, Lulu Lemon, Anthropologie, Sunglass Hut, California Pizza Kitchen, Bass Pro Shop..... It's almost as if these corporations are pushing out small business.
The immense amount of small businesses in Durham is what makes it feel like home to me because I know so many of the owners because I lived there for 18 years and went to middle school and high school in downtown and used to walk all over

It’s truly still dangerous in areas like any other town of course but great place to grow, build& development. So stop by some time. An fo da ones who might know me 🗣SQUAD🤘🏾🤘🏾🖕🏾🖕🏾🖕🏾GANG GANG 🤣😂🤣😂

I commute a hour to durham. I could never afford to live there.
I Got 2 Visit Durham
It is not affordable for regular working ppl. That’s why a lot of people moving to Mebane. Burlington etc
I am considering to move to Durham NC from Chicago IL. Where are the bad parts of Durham. I will have to visit there and look around with a relative.
Bull City born and raised!!! Durhamite in da bldg!
I’m from Durham but I moved away and I haven’t been there in a couple months and this is really awesome to see and I saw in the thumbnail that you were driving down N. Duke St. and I’m excited to see how the rebuilding is going after the coffee shop exploded while I was in high school just a block away
Edit my high school is at 5:00
I also went to Durham High % blocks long and 3 blocks wide
❤️
I come from the projects that used to be on Fayetteville street. Durham will always be home. It’s a very interesting place to see top universities and gentrification and yet still a lot of violence.
All right you did Raleigh and Durham North Carolina. Now you got to do Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Wilmington, and Asheville North Carolina.
i will eventually. winston and greensboro are sadly ghetto
And now they merged with SunTrust in Atlanta. And now they are moving their headquarters Charlotte and changing a name.
How about Greenville, NC? I hear mixed things about that area.
Jarvis Stradford I’ve been to both as well both do have some really nice downtown areas. Sure there is some bad parts but every town has its bad parts.
@@christophercarter129 I will put Greenville one day. I'm waiting when you get a hundred thousand. That will be will soon. Greenville North Carolina don't got no skyline. Sometimes people will confuse Greenville North Carolina to Greenville South Carolina. Greenville South Carolina do have a skyline, but Greenville North Carolina got more population than Greenville South Carolina do of the annex city limits laws in South Carolina.
I used to live here watching this was so nostalgic.
cool. it's changed a lot!
Dang you drove right past the gas explosion site. I moved to Burlington a year ago and downtown looks so different! My kids played little league at the old bulls stadium. Makes want to move back to Durham!!!
Oh I did? I think it was further west from where I was maybe not. Anyways glad you enjoyed it Bree 😊
Lived in Durham for 3 months and loved it so much
Very relaxing video and nice scenery too.
I’ve been using these driving videos to help me fall asleep. Works so well
Cool!
I am sorry to hear that it is dangerous to be downtown at night now.
It's up and down Bill. Durham has really improved a lot!
I haven't stopped in a lot of places in North Carolina, but I did enjoy Franklin. They have a number of ruby mines to test your luck at. Durham looks nice, too.
Franklin! I see the billboards for that ruby mining place. i want to go. Is it fun or even worth it? can i really maybe find a big real ruby??
I've lived in Durham for 54 yrs but haven't been Downtown in over 3 yrs and a LOT has changed according to this video - wow ...
You may want to plan around a live event at either DPAC or the Durham Bulls, including dining at a nearby restaurant.
Nick your car must have pretty good suspension...smooth ride made it easy to watch your video
Wait, where was the "bad neighborhood" lol? Couldn't find it.
From Durham here. If he went north/east and around the 85/70 highways you’d cross into some less fortunate areas.
I live in Durham. It started calming down about fifteen years ago. The shootings started back three years ago. Six people were shot in this town, week before last.
I love how he doesn't mention the blown up building on Duke Street. Just blows right by it.
It wasn't "blown up" (your implication being sabotage). It was a gas leak. Very sad, a well-liked businessman was killed.
@@jillcnc Don't be silly. It nothing of the kind. It's perfectly good description of the state of the building..
I've been in quarantine for 9 months so I really needed to watch this lmao

Im from Winston-Salem, NC Aka TRE 4 but i love Durham, NC BULL CITY love the video.
great! i should come to winston but i have to say outside of downtown its kinda rough there.
Thank you for doing this, it's super helpful to see the streets. The music loop is crazy making, would love it if that were eliminated.
I think you should do these videos on the native folks in these cities to truly highlight what the town at least use to be like. The historical foundation and character of these places not the 90% transplant heavy influence.
huh good idea.
Shout me out if you do the video! Lol
Every major city is full of transplants. Durham isn’t special
Collector thank you for these videos keep up the good work
This a nice video of the Bull City.
Thanks for this cool Video. 👍
great! are you local here in NC?
Bro' it's all about a place with low crime, morals, great places to raise a family and where people don't judge you by your skin color..White or Black and definitely not on your politics even if you voted Trump or Obama, because those people that hate another over that are mental..
good to know do you live there?
Agreed! Unfortunately, very few towns like you described exist.
Can't find it Man.. Frustrating..😂
You should do Chicago next!
He should do Charlotte
I should do both!
Nick Johnson Please be careful if you’re gonna be in Chicago. Some parts are very dangerous.
I'm a native Chicagoan. It's too expensive. High taxes (you will be taxed to death). It's very crowded, corrupted and segregated. Plus we have high crime and homelessness and high cases of Covid-19. Just warning you.
I really enjoyed my time in Durham, I'd like to live there.
most peoole when they hear durham nc they think "oh that's in the country" "they dont know if they want to be like the city or the country" but when u live here (like me) its all the same and we are jot country we just have the stereotype but we love it down here and the weather might get u sometimes and the accent but thats what makes us North Carolinian
He managed to avoid that huge jail right in the center of downtown
Perhaps I think it’s more complex than that he just like every developer and political hack they want a perfect picture of Durham I mean hell let’s face it Durham is a vacant desert with a substantial number of people thriving in it and simply put they want to turn it into a bigger place where more “money” can be made and we all know more money more problems if it’s more problems for people that make more money what does that mean for my little hometown of Durham
It's some nice scenery, no doubt!
So, where are you going to take the Nickmobile next? I hope it's my hometown of Indianapolis ;)
ill be passing through there in mid dec. i actually wanted to watch live PD in Lawrence on a Friday night. Do you ever go up there? Ive only been near zionsville area not that far east.
@@NickJohnson I go up to Lawrence all the time. I have family there.
is it as bad as the show makes it look? indy has some rough areas.
@@NickJohnson Not from Indy, but it's a city with multiple personalities. There are areas in the heart of the city that are stunning to see and be a part of, then there are places that seem almost foreign by comparison.
@@NickJohnson It does have rough areas, and the usual issues a big city has, but overall it's a nice place.

Which downtown is bigger between Macon GA Augusta GA and Durham NC? 🤔
Born and raise in Durham and love it.
Is Durham conservative or liberal
Durham downtown is doing good demolishing the old houses and building new ones and bringing nice people to the area, before all that changes was scary to even walk there
We are doing a conference there later this year and I hoped to use this video as part of the promotion, nope.
Isn't Durham where Homesnacks is?
