    We like to surf the wakes of passing boats and move between them to create an endless wave on our hydrofoils. We call this wake thieving. To do so, we need a foil that we can launch from our docks, and pump for a very long time. There are more than 59 hydrofoil brands, and within some brands you can build thousands of unique foils from five main components. We want to find the best foils for the lake, so we’ve setup a scorecard based on the 10 most important criteria. Please let us know know which foils you’d like us to review and stay tuned as we share what we learn on our journey to fly forever.
    Disclosure: This season we will review many foil brands recommended to us by viewers, and review these foils with this same methodology. When possible, we will share the exact builds (mast, fuse, rear wing, front wing, etc) to help save viewers the time and energy to navigate through some of the decisions needed to spec a foil. Green Hat was kind enough to lend us this foil so we could try it and share our experience. We make a small commission if you purchase through the above link, but please feel free to purchase through your retailer of choice. #ad

    "We've tried only 40." Hey, probably on average about 37 more than anyone else! I kind of chuckle every time I hear you say it (I've watched multiple times!).

      You're right. That sounds ridiculous. I didn't appreciate it until you made this comment. Don't tell my wife!

    Great review/analysis. Now, it is time for Wake Thief t-shirts and sweat shirts. I'd buy one for certain!

      Ha! I know I can count on your. Please send me your address and I'll send you a hat (at no charge, of course)! wakethief@icloud.com. My 9 year old is in charge of the sticker department and might send you some too :) Thanks for all of your support, Pete. I know I can count on you! Best wishes, Devon.

    Hello! Your videos are very good, they have a lot of precise information. A question at what speed would an 86kg person begin to fly?

    Delta was ahead of the times! They had thin, high-aspect foils from the beginning, before anyone was ready for them. Glad to see them getting some good press, that is a good deal at $1399.

      Thanks, Dave. George is truly impressive, isn’t he!

    • @fungalspore

      no....they were WAY behind the times....europe was foiling DECADES before Delta....and Delta has now sold out to China.....and George is nowhere to be found...

      @@fungalspore There is a lot to unpack here: (1) I'm not saying Delta invented hydrofoils, but they were building foils since foiling with kites took off in 2013/2014. (2) What I am saying is when surf foiling took off in 2016, Delta's surf foils were considered too fast. They were thinner and higher aspect than the Go Foils that were selling like hotcakes, but now everyone is going for thinner high aspect foils as the sport has evolved. (3) George doesn't run Delta anymore? I hadn't heard that. He's not "nowhere to be found", he's right here!: ua-cam.com/video/CnkUP8ZNItI/v-deo.html

    I'm a big fan of your scientific approach. I hope you keep the channel going cause I feel companies are looking at your comparison as a benchmark.
    Have you had a chance to look at sab foil products? Like 1100/450 combo?

    • @WakeThief

      Thank you, Serge. It's on my list ... but first I will be trying the SABfoil 1250. Review coming soon.

    Great job! Where do I find the whole list of all tested foils please?

    • @WakeThief

      Yes, it's so needed. Thanks for reminding me. I'll be sharing a video soon once we've reviewed the first 5-10 we've reviewed with this scoring system. If you check out our YT Channel, there's four thumbnails that look this way and that's all we've reviewed in this new system. ua-cam.com/channels/r7-oFkrAqai1LWiJwgzUNw.html

    Hi Devon. Wondering if this would be a suitable first foil. Have been riding a friends Slingshot 76 this season, and progressing slowly, on a small tournament boat wake, but haven't managed to pump it successfully yet. Or would this be too much. I'm the same weight as you. Thanks. You make it look so easy!

    Would be interesting to see what the delta does with the axis 460 rear wing.

      Yes, that’s a great idea. I’ll reach out to delta and see about it.

    It looks like you are using different boards now that you did not introduce in other videos, unless I missed something. (Or it is the same board with different colors?)

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому

      Hi Perso ... for testing I'm still using a Slingshot Dwarcraft ... I was using the 2019 ~10L / 106cm board. Now I'm using an early prototype version of the 2021 Dwarcraft ~10L/100cm board.

    It has a better glide than Axis 1150 but a lower top speed, ok.
    Which one has better Dockstart performance like Indiana 1100P?

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому +2

      1740 had better glide and 1150 had betters lower low speed (better low speed lift) which makes the axis 1150 easier to dock start.

    Great video. Have you ever tried flying without a tail wing?

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, I have! It's fun, lower drag, but nearly impossible to pump! You can see it here, at the start of the video. ua-cam.com/video/yUgfmvJLGy0/v-deo.html

    What's the thickness of the wing?

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому

      I measured the thickness as 9.4% of chord length at 10cm offset from the centerline (max chord). Max chord was 18.7cm.

    Hey Devon. I always enjoy these videos. Could you notice the 'reflex airfoil' in the trailing edge that George talks about in this video? ua-cam.com/video/kBtDVYJGcbU/v-deo.html . Along those same lines, I'm also wondering if a rear wing with positive lift wouldn't help in being able to pump longer. In one of the the posts to Dominyk Hoskyns video (ua-cam.com/video/IcsHgh4KKyc/v-deo.html&lc=Ugzk5aOyHU2gswF6W854AaABAg.9TElPCOXk7c9TGnMXgo4hA), Olaf Vanagon talks about a using a home-made rear wing with positive lift. To me this makes sense, there is a lot of inefficiency in having the foil pitch up during pumping. If you can have the foil move up in the water without pitching up, pumping should be significantly more efficient. I've only used foils with a kite/boat/cable but I'm looking forward to trying some pumping when my new Axis foil arrives in a couple of weeks. Thanks Again.

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому

      Hi David - I did not notice the reflex, and I'm not sure the 1740 has it, but I do know that George has reflexed wings. I've done multiple tests with rear wings (across 3+ brands) changing angle of attack from -5 degrees off of the front wing angle of attack to same angle of attack (lifting), and I've always found the setup of the manufacturer is close to right ... when rear wing lifts it doesn't pitch up with enough force to regain elevation while pumping. If its too negative, it pitches up too fast, forcing you to apply front foot pressure and begin your next pump sooner than you want ... there's an ideal angle that balances these two out ... I've also tried rear wings with different cross section (high camber, low camber, thick, thin, upside down, etc) .. .again, no measurable improvement in my experience ... the best improvement has been a hinged flexible rear wing .. we've had good results with that, but not enough of an improvement to forgo exquisite pitch control associated with a stiff fuselage / rear wing ... thanks for the question ... sorry for the long answer.

    flat wings blow.....no roll stability.....at real speed anyways...

    • @WakeThief
      @WakeThief  2 роки тому

      This wing was not as flat as many other high aspect wings I've tried ... Once you started to roll it, I found it rolled more. No doubt at higher speeds everything is pronounced and we're going about as slow as these foils will let us go. Thanks for the comment.
