John, you nailed it brother... 👏 "this is a one way Covenant, where I will love you regardless of circumstances". Holy literally means different. To be set apart. Theres a reason why that is the word used by the seraphim to describe what they see as the fly circling around the Most High. There is none like Him. So in a sense, you're saying "let's make our marriage holy, different, set apart, something that brings honor and reflects the Most High.

It shouldn't be "Happy wife, happy life." it should be "Happy spouse, happy house" and in that statement its not dependent on the other spouse to provide that full happiness. That is on each of us individually. Your spouse can add to the happiness but not the cornerstone.

For a while though I wasn't in a good place and struggled with alcohol for years. But I've since been sober over 7 years and beginning of last year got in the gym to make some changes to my body, which I absolutely had despised for years (too skinny). I'm thinking maybe later this year I'll try dating again.

    I found an exception
You can change everything and go to al the marriage counseling, can't please a bipolar spouse, that was abused as a child, with a mother in law pushing for divorce, and then misery for her daughter and grandkids.
When the VA counselor tells you "next time she will send you to the morgue, not the emergency room" you then succumb to her demands for divorce.

You have hit on so many of the issues my wife and I have had during our 50 year relationship. (We were 16 when we met.) One of the most important things we have found is when we don't have joy in God, ourselves, each other, our family, that's when our marriage does not work well. Seldom do we feel joy in all those categories at the same time. But, when we cannot find joy in any these, we have had to rethink how we are living our lives. Everything changes and, to keep our marriage healthy, we have changed to maintain our own identities while growing our love and respect for each other.

To the "this is hard" (24:54) I remind my daughter that it's triple reinforced when we play that game. We thought it, said it and heard it from a voice we trust implicitly. This gives the defeatist attitude significant strength when we didn't have to make that choice. There are times to use this loop in a positive way to our advantage. Finding a ways to prop ourselves up in the face of adversity and challenge is vital in many aspects of a life that strives and thrives irrespective of circumstances.

Hey John! I want to thank you guys for this video.
I am a Christian young looking to pretty soon put a ring on the hand of a beautiful, strong, Godly young lady, and this video really cleared up some of the questions that have been flooding my mind. As a young man making my way onwards in the Lord and in this world, I am bombarded with wrong thoughts and ideas as to what marriage should hold. God put this young lady in my life, and I want to treat her accordingly. Thank you again for your sound advice!

This channel always makes me feel like I'm just hanging out with friends. Kudos, guys. Your authenticity really shines through. I'm completely hooked on watching your videos. And to think I went down this rabbit hole just because I was looking for a review on a rifle sling. Well done.

35+ years into a life sentence and a movie comes to mind win I think of marriage

Love this content. Truth spoken! #sacredmarriage
My wife and I recovered from a year long separation in 2010. Same kind of issues and had to discover (the hard way) these truths too. Holy vs Happy. Now more in love than ever before and its not because we focus on being happy, we see conflict as growth trying to happen.
    Great channel!

THANK YOU for publicly stating what my own mind, heart, and soul believe. It is a rare and refreshing change from our selfish and materialistic culture. As someone "in the trenches of struggle" myself, your encouragement is a needed shot in the arm to help guys like me persevere and to keep the faith, continuously moving forward with the Lord at my side. Please pray for so many couples in the same boat and that both husbands and wives may avoid the hardness of heart that destroys. God bless!

What kind of loser thumbs downs this? 😤 Great advice on keeping people grounded, balanced, honest, and grown up/mature/adult within a relationship. I could see this helping nearly everyone I know or at least reaffirming to others that they’re on a good path.

Crazy authoritarian "liberals" that care nothing for traditional values, maturity, growth, honesty, having children, or being committed to the betterment of anyone but their own, ultimately empty and purposeless, pleasure. That kind of loser.

Love this! So much of this rings true, balance is so important. Family and work with a reasonable, healthy amount of focus on your own well being. Awesome to see MEN engaged in a real conversation about the reality and responsibility of marriage.

It’s the husband’s job to lead in humility. God has designed it as such, so as soon as you decided to hold up your end of the deal, she was inclined for follow your lead. Well done, my man. You have been blessed. Keep up the grind!

Thank you for putting the caveat in the there that you may need to elevate some friendships. Not all friendship circles are healthy. And it's okay to cut them and forge healthier friendship circles.

The founding fathers should've kept it as "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of property." Do we really have the right to be happy?
This is a great episode. I could've used this advise a few years ago. Psychiatrists/couples therapists, at least the ones we talked to, just made things worse.
