👩🏽💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

For some reason the button "Publish in subscription feeds and notify subscribers" was unticked when I originally uploaded this video. This can't be changed once the video has gone public, so I have reposted it here to ensure all my subscribers see it! Apologies if this video appeared twice for you. Hope you still enjoy this month's Night Sky News :)
Thank you!
I was so confused. I thought I was going mad after watching the whole thing and then seeing it for a second time being uploaded only 4 minutes ago...I even refreshed the page several times and checked my history to make sure I wasn't completely losing it. Oh well - twice the fun I suppose! Love your vids btw
@@michaelwells4802 Sorry for the confusion! Hope you enjoyed
Congratulations on your new house
Thank you for your work. It’s very HARD TO FIND HONEST content that is not sensationalised. I am watching from Australia and do appreciate the inclusion of the southern hemisphere where you can. 😊👍😎THANKS.
Yep watching from New Zealand and do appreciate a comment or so about the southern hemisphere.
One time I lived out in the deserts of Saudi Arabia. Many times I slept outside in the desert well out of town, with no town light
The sky was completely full of stars, completely full of them. How wonderful it was.
Thank you so much, Dr Becky.
Den
@@denrobinson8277 outback Australia is much the same. The sky is so full it makes you wonder if it’s real.
There is structure in the noise.
Watching from Brazil and I can relate. This channel is really one of a kind.
Thanks for featuring us, Dr. Becky! We're so excited to dig in to all of this great multiwavelength science - keep up by following our channel here😀
What a beautiful time to be alive with all the most recent science and technological advances! 💙
I'm glad LISA is moving forward. I also think it's fascinating that astronomers can use neutron stars as gravitational detectors.
Congratulations on the move, Dr Becky! Love your work always! Matt, Sydney AU!
Yay the night-sky news the _longer version_ landed, thank you Dr Becky for this. Keep up the good work please 👍
LISA is good news. Hopefully someday its discoveries will move forward our understanding of the universe.
Congrats on your upcoming move Dr. Becky, well deserved! 👍👍👏👏💖💖
I prefer to think you're remaining stationary while the rest of the universe moves in order to give you a nicer house. Happy to be doing my part.
Thanks a mill. Any Juno news always cheers me up for some reason!
And condolences on the mic. It had a good run.
What a terrific show. Engaging and interesting from start to finish. TY Doc.
Congrats on the move! Re: bloopers: "spouth" (n.) 1) a spout that always faces south (i.e., one at the north pole of a world, or one that is fixed in a south-facing orientation elsewhere); 2) the mouth of one's spouse. Coming up with definitions for accidental neologisms is something I do for fun... and yes, working on the OED is one of my dream jobs.
Congratulations on the move! Looking forward to seeing the new digs in March, and hope you'll be happy (but not too happy, or we'll miss those fabulous bloopers at the end of each show). Cheers!
Don't thank us! We thank you for being such an incredible resource! So entertaining, informative, topical, well researched and presented! You've worked hard and deserve all of it! Thanks!
Congrats on moving into a new place! I hope one of those upcoming videos is about the Kerr paper PBS SpaceTime jus5 did a video on - I’d love to get your perspective.
Just finished "A Brief History of Black Holes" last night -- absolutely wonderful book. Thank you for all your hard work (and expertise and humor)!
That's so cool that LISA is finally getting adopted! Last night I read about LISA in your book, so I'm excited to hear about the technological developments in that project
Your excitement is contagious. Thats what always keeps me coming back for more NSN.
Good luck with the move Becky. I'm looking forward to seeing your new studio. Hopefully, your new place will be out in deepest, darkest rural Oxfordshire, with a shed containing a telescope at the end of the back garden, and plenty of good views of the night sky. 😀
Always phenomenal! Thanks to you and everyone who made these images possible! From Scientists to Custodians. #Grateful ❤
Congrats on the move! Loving the channel, you're doing a great public service here. 💖
The audio doesn't sound up to your usual standard, so you may want to check what was different.
I questioned that myself. I thought it sounded like there wasn't a mic. Still heard it fine though.
My (cheap) lav mic I always use died on me, so I used my (expensive) podcast mic instead on a table in front of me but it picked up more of the room noise. That’s what you’re hearing
Hate to say it, but the lack of a mid-range sounds like you had a hat on top of your mic today, @@DrBecky I am surprised you had a direct shot from mouth to microphone.
@@DrBeckythere is nothing wrong with the sound whatsoever. Some people just like to complain about nothing. Thank you for the wonderful content❤❤
@@DrBecky What's a "lav" mic? On second thoughts, perhaps I don't want to know :)
Congratulations on the new pad, Becky! We love space almost as much as we love youuu! 😘
I didn't expect so much incredible news this month. I can't wait for LISA
Congratulations Dr. Becky!! All the very best!!
Congratulations Dr Becky!!!
On Io they call it Jupitershine, on the Moon they call it Earthshine, while here on Earth we call it moonshine. I guess creatures everywhere hate paying taxes on liquid refreshment.
Just to say thanks again for the brilliant content that has taught me things I was unaware even existed.
Congrats! So happy for you.
Fascinating stuff, dr. Becky! Thanks!!! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you so much for this great video!
The new JWST images are just incredible! Just a funny thing: I already saw these images like 2 months ago, as I am (more or less) part of PHANGS. So this video was especially interesting for me! 😊
Thank you!
Thank you for another exciting video!!
In one of your future videos could you do an overview of the article in the 2/19/2024 issue of "Nature Astronomy" about the large quasar (J0529-4351) which is near a large black hole. The lead author is: Christian Wolf. The quasar is 500 trillion times brighter than our sun. The black hole is 17 billion times larger than our sun.
You have put in a lot of work. Good luck with the move. Thank you.
Congrats on the new house! One of the best things about this channel is your enthusiasm and love for space. To see the channel grow and help with these types of things is amazing 💕
my astronomy teacher at school brought up and your book and i nearly fell out of my chair
:) Best of luck in the new digs Dr. Becky! Love the JWST t-shirt!
Thank you! Enjoy the new digs!
Congrats on the new house! It's crazy that the dwarf galaxy is as far away as the Mesozoic age!
I learned about LISA when we visited the LIGO near us in Louisiana. Exciting to see it's finally getting off the ground (literally)!
Thanks, I think I saw the original post. Commenting to support this wonderful channel with a wonderfully dynamic, talented, and knowledgeable creator and presenter!
great episode as always!
Grats on the move, I hope all the plants made it! :p
Congrats both on the move and on the much better and more helpful sponsor !
Thank you, keep working.
Thankiuu Dr. !
"dragging" Lisa behind the Earth is just a matter of placing it at L5. We've already started placing equipment at other Lagrange points so the tech exists to get something out to L5.
congrats on the move. we're also happy for you good luck.
Congratulations!
Great video! (Consider Lowering your light's brightness a bit, or bringing the levels down in post. You look over exposed)
Love your videos, don't worry about the small technical issues 😊
Congrats on the new home, and thanks for another episode!
Congrats on the move! 👍👍👍
What is truely mind-blowing is that Webbs' amazing high-res inages are going to be future astronomers' low-res images some day.
I'm a bit of a fan of NGC 0628 (Phantom Galaxy, you know... I'm just a big kid) it was quite a case when I thought I recognized it in the images from the PHANGS survey out of the corner of my eye... (yes, I was multitasking, I'm guilty, I'm sorry) the images are incredible, you made my night
JWST is really getting it done despite its turbulent past, big hooray!
Gratitude and a big hug from the hemisphere that sees the Galactic Center
tl!
JWST must be seeing Double Vision, a video do nice it watched it twice
Congrats on the new crib!
Incredible!
You are completely welcome to visit us for 2:43 of Totality. We have a guest room and I'd enjoy talking about astrophysics...
Notably: during Totality it is possible to witness suicidal comets falling in. I once did a numerical study which showed this was quite likely for a random infalling Oort comet
Thanks!
Many thanks for teaching me to find the winter hexagon! I am really enjoying learning a few stars, fantastic!
thank you!
Great video thanks for sharing 🍻👍
I just got a Celestron 6se. Havent gotten it set up just yet but im pretty stoked about it.
You are awesome, once again love hearing your space news!!
Well, that's exciting. And congratulations on the new home.
Wowza those PHANGS images are amazing
Around 1290s Dr. Becky says that dust particles are held together by gravity and not the EM factors I've heard of.
The Universe is Eternal💯
Thank you for sharing such interesting information with us, and doing it in such a way that non-physicists can understand it!
I love your videos, thank you for what you do
I would love to see a collaboration with you and Anton Petrov.
Thanks for making me imagine "hello wonderful Becky" with that delightful smile of his. I would like to see that too.
thank you for the joy and knowledge
Good luck in the move!
Every time you said "the conjunction " my brain pictured Ohgrah(sp?) from dark crystal. That movie was something i asked mom to rent whever i was home sick from school, gods im old.
I love your enthusiasm. You love what you do and it makes you so good.
Excellent.
You and Anton need to coordinate your videos I think 🤔 ... and now that I've watched your vid, there's loads more than alluded to in the title! Very good. Carry on.
@ Dr. Becky: How likely is it that there is intelligent life at work around Przybylski's Star? Please share with us your views on the topic.
Thank you, love how you convey this great information
So very interesting. Lots of mind blowing discoveries and projects happening.
Congrats on the new house!
Thanks
In my to do list:
1. Remember to move much closer to the equator. I am fed up with these planets always wanting to stay close to the ecliptic.
2. Don't forget to take at least one week in the winter in northern Norway or Sweden, just for the lights. (yes, not for the food, obviously)
Great news about LISA
I am watching from South Africa and really appreciate the inclusion of what can be seen in the sky from the underside of the Earth.
Thank you
Is everything really INCREDIBLE ?
Congratulations 🎉
Four videos in one day, I am looking forward to see how the bloopers progress over the next 4 weeks! 🤣
Really happy for you doc! And I’m happy I don’t have to help you move!! Congrats and thanks 🙏
Back for round 2!
My dad got me into astronomy when I was a young child. You though make it enjoyable for us adults who don't have a PHD in astronomy / cosmology.
Huge congratulations on the move. I hope you selected a neighborhood without any motorbikes. Although I may miss your reactions to them in the bloopers.
Good luck with the move.
Thank you for your video, good luck with the move 👍
Dr. Becky looks scary excited when talks about LISA. 😅 But for a comprensible reason. I can wait to see the results from the LISA data too.
Liking and commenting!
Such an excellent scientist should have a happy home to live in when you are not at university being magnificent and solving space mysteries, I hope the move is easy ✌️❤️🇬🇧
