Which game do you prefer?
GameSpot well ive only played hollow knight but its also a platformer so i dont think id like dead cells more, pluss hollow knight is half the price and has free dlc
I like both
*DORK SOULS*
your old pal chronic depression its called dead cells
Marquise Pixley woooosh
"Creepy bug guy in a cave underground with a sword" is also my aesthetic
Tyler Lund lol I read ur comment as the guy said it
Actually he is *DEMONIC SHELL FULL OF VOID*

Dead Cells made me a better Hollow Knight player.
I was stuck on a couple bosses, then Dead Cells came out, I played that for 10 hours, came back to Hollow Knight, and breezed through a lot of the stuff that was holding me back. Pretty cool.
My playthrough on hollow knight has reached 70 hours because it's my first metroidvania, dead cells would screw me over so badly if I played it but I'm intrigued by it
@@raidiar2021 same

Dead Cells is a blast, but on the harder difficulties it can get old quickly. The game's permadeath design and randomization will grate on you eventually. Enemies hit stupidly hard and you get spammed by them.
@@bizmonkey007 over 100 hours in and not really getting tired. still tryin out new weapon combinations.
olaf8778
I love the weapon combinations and finding a new build that completely changes how I play. I guess what irked me was the tedium of trying to get a run going on higher BCs. They make it incredibly difficult, especially in the starter level when you're weak and have no scrolls. If you get hit once it can really screw up your whole run.
Dead Cells and Hollow Knight are completely different games if you set aside the platforming and the metroidvania mechanics.
well... then... they aren’t completely different?
so... bassically the whole idea of both games are platforming and metroidvania
alejandro fajardo What I'm trying to say is I don't understand why they're comparing the games when they're so vastly different from each other. Hollow Knight has tons of content and is way more story and exploration based while Dead Cells is all about combat and upgrades. Sure there's a story to Dead Cells, but its not really the main focus. Both games are fantastic but comparing them just because they have somewhat similar mechanics is silly because they're so different from each other.
I would argue they are almost the same game, except Hollow Knight has a story that it pushes, where as Dead Cells has a story it drags along behind it. They definetly fit into the same genre and even sub-genre so i think saying they're "so different" is a stretch. The game feel is different, the story is different, but the mechanics feel pretty similar.
ryan techmeier dead cells is a rougelike. Hollow Knight isn't. I think that's a pretty big difference.
I say buy both since they are very different besides being 2D sidescrolling games. One is a roguelike loot/deathfest with RPG mechanics, the other is probably the best metroidvania experience to come out since Symphony of the Night. One has a main story, the other is just see how far you can get with your upgrades. both are really cheap too!
Agreed completely. I was gonna comment basically the same thing but you beat me to it.
the gba and ds castlevanias are VERY good. easily as good as symphony of the night. some arguably are better imo. hollow knight is great but i wouldnt say its better tha. those games.
Dawn of Sorrow soundtrack is seared into my brain after playing it so long lol.
agree with you completely
The guy representing HK did a terrible job! He was only 10 hours into a 40+ hour game. He didn't even reach any of the (IMO) best gaming moments I've had in years!
Totally agree with you. He should have played more before giving any thoughts. The combat mechanics gets much more complicated towards the end with the full set of possible movements and smarter bosses.
Which moment were you exactly referring to?
@Gérard Mentor this could be footage he didn't play lol
I feel like that's ok because they were both talking about first impressions and if you have to get to the end of the 40 hour game for it to start getting really good then it wasn't really good to begin with I like hollow kinght and that guy did a good job explaining it
Both are great, but Hollow Knight is an all time great. Also- I liked the less confrontational style of the VS. this time- but I would have liked to see someone representing Hollow Knight that has played a bit more than 10 hours, because that's just barely scratching the surface...
Easily Hollow Knight. It has a full fleshed out world and characters. Dead Cells is still a repetitive Rogue like game, even if it's one of the best in its genre.
RedVIII and hollow knight is half the price and has free dlc
RedVIII false
I don't see why world and characters automatically makes it better. Dead Cells fixes the problem I always had with Metroidvanias in that their combat is usually not that great. And ones you realize Hollow Knight is about finding elaborate keys it can be just as repetitive.
dead cells has absolutely no connection the metroidvania genre and is just a rogue like... stop calling it a metroidvania
hollow knight's controls are tighter than a nun's buns, and the combat is superb, allowing multiple different playstyles, thanks to the various abilities you pick up along the way. unlike in some metroidvania's, where abilities are specifically keys, the abilities in hollow knight are each extremely useful in either combat, or movement, not just as glorified keys.
Hollow Knight is easily the best metroidvania ever made. A huge variety of areas, enemies, bosses, secrets, and characters make it an absolute masterpiece. Don’t even get me started on the sound track.
Brinsk Hollow knight is sooooooooo overrated.
Foxes are entirely canine it really isn’t lol. Everything about the game screams creativity and effort. It’s been polished to perfection, it’s got a shit ton of content, and it’s only £10. That’s a masterpiece for your wallet.
Hollow Knight is great but not better than Super Metroid or SotN. It might be the best outside of the namesake series tho.
Yung Pattawan strongly disagree. Metroid games always have some really bullshit moments when trying to progress that make zero sense. I don’t know about Sotn since I haven’t had the chance to play it, but I strongly believe that Hollow Knight is probably better. There just isn’t another metroidvania which can match Hollow Knight’s variety and attention to detail.
Completely wrong.
there is no comparison HK takes the cake
Ak47 wrong.
Wrong. Hollow Knights world is great but it's combat is pretty standard while Dead Cells' is amazing. So it's about what you value more. I value combat.
I like both games
You're wrong, but it's up to you.
I guarantee you never experimented with all of the different charms in HK because its far from "standard"
Hollow Knight is a Masterpiece, i don't think you can compare those 2 games
Hollow Knight is the best game ever to exist
@NanoKat
Nope, that would be Cave Story ;) (Hollow Knight is an amazing game and quickly climbed the ranks to my all-time favorite games of all times like DKC2, A Link to the Past, etc.)
NanoKat Hollow knight is sooooooooo overrated.
@Foxes
When you put a statement like this out there you should explain why.
Dead Cells is also a masterpiece in every single way so where is the problem to comparing the two games?
Hollow knight is pure GOLD .I didnt played Dead cells yet
kamo124 Didn't take a grammer class either. I'm kidding
They are both genius! If you like rougelikes Dead Cells is a fast Hollow Knight rougelike. It's really really fun! You won't be disappointed. In my opinion they are on the same level. If you're in the mood for a deep story and big world to explore you play hollow knight. If you want some action packed bite size exploring you play dead cells.
DarkRengi it's grammar, not grammer hehehe
Both are great games and the complement each other perfectly.
Lmao, can we just enjoy the fact that you tried to make a cheap roast about his grammar, but you misspelled grammar! 😂
Keep in mind that Hollow Knight is an extremely large game with a very large amount of content for your money. I think Dead Cells is a very good game but Hollow Knight is an absolute masterpiece to be played and remembered for all time.
John Evans no one is ever going to remember hollow knight
ok troll
Rhys Kleier yet people are still making videos on it months after it came out
@@rhyskleier9961 that's false its my favorite indie game
@@gunblade8674 Oh relax, he's just a stupid kid.
I love dead cells, but Hollow Knight is literally, possibly my favorite platformer/metroidvania of all time. Im a stranger in the internet so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I fucking love hollow knight, and it's easily one of the best third party games on the switch.
Not sure if anyone noticed this but when I was playing Dead Cells and I was in the Ramparts i came across one of the many labs, but this one entomologist lab and there was a bunch of insects on the walls in picture frames and one of them was a picture of the of the main character in Hollow Knight.
id maybe take this critique in consideration if 1. you actually played and finished the games you were comparing (which you obviously didnt as the person on the left said he only had 10 hours in hollow knight and 2. if the video was a bit more structured than two guys awkwardly sitting in a couch talking vaugely about two games they dont really understand, like how deadcells is a rougelite and how there are no areas in the entire game that block you off from beating the game untill you have an ability other than the vine rune in the second area.
Hollow Knight all the way.
Dead Cells is fun too but I don’t have time for these permanent death bullshit. Either you have a lot of free time, or really love the game, you can finish it.
Thaibiohazard123 there are permanent upgrades that make futures runs easier.
I play both and find HK being the time sink. I can usually squeeze a few runs in DC on the go. I managed 6 runs in work today 😉 I simply can't do that with HK. I kind of feel it deserves more of your attention because if feels like a more traditional Metroidvania game.
Charlie L.
Lol, I photoshopped my face to some random guy. Just for fun.
But yeah, your guess is close enough.
DOOVDEPLAYER
Yeah, but I feel like DC is something have to really commit to it if you want to finish. The fact that you have to beat the game in one run bothers me. I played Hollow Knight every evening after work and I made progress bit by bit until I finished the game (it was very good) Can’t really find time to play on the go on work day though. :( (which is ironic, since that was what I bought Switch for)
You really don't have to beat the game in one run. And trust me, you most probably won't. Getting through levels is a breeze but you will be exploring the first 4-5 levels in the first 10 or so times that you get killed, each run taking about 15 minutes at most. Getting to the first boss usually took me about 20 minutes each time, and that is after exploring all the areas that come before it. The perma-death system is not too bad since all the weapons and items you lose are easy to find again and you also keep getting permanent upgrades.
One thing i will say i like about Dead Cells is that you the player can choode whether or not you wanna piece together the story. There's various lore rooms throughout that allow you to piece together what's going on in the world.
The levels and loading screens also have their own stories that can add to the overall lore of the game.
I really like mostly dark with glowing bits here and there so both games in my opinion have a great aesthetic
Gamespot just trust me on this one....
Warframe vs. Destiny (Make it happen)
Stephen Sawyer that’d be interesting, I played both. I love both warframe and destiny 1, I don’t think d2 is worth it tho
Samjamhawkeye Gaming I just wanna see what they can offer to the discussion honestly, aside from the cancerous "X is better than Y just because" argument
U dont even need to do that.destiny aint even a thing in front of warframe
Yes break the destiny community
both are shit, and you said that on the other versus
Haven't played Dead Cells, but I put about 80 hours into Hollow Knight and got to around 103% completion. Regarding the difficulty, the boss fights ramp up very quickly. There were some bosses that I kept throwing myself against 20 or 30 times and kept getting wiped out until I finally wrapped my head around their patterns. Probably some of the toughest boss fights I've ever experienced.
Another thing which isn't apparent at first is that the game starts to throw some particularly cruel platforming challenges at you eventually. Some areas reminded me of Celeste where you have to pull off a complicated series of perfect jumps and if you don't you immediately die and have to start over.
Loved the game and I agree with others who call it a masterpiece but just giving a warning to those who might not know what they're getting into: it might seem slow and methodical at first but you WILL die dozens of times in the same places over and over again while swearing at the TV with sweaty palms.
i love hollow knight. i want to try dead cells because it looks like it kind of mashes together hollow knight with some of the mechanics of enter the gungeon which i also love. i'm just not crazy about the art style but maybe it's something that i'll warm up to or it will look better once i'm actually playing it and understanding whats going on on screen.
Dead cells is really fun and well made, but Hollow Knight is a masterpiece...
Hollow Knight have many design flaws so it is not a masterpiece. IT IS OVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRATED!
@@awakenedsoul2638i can agrew it a some bit overrated but stil masterpiece
@@Five_pebbles_official
NAAA AAAH! No bub! It has too many flaws to be considered a masterpiece. It ain't a masterpiece. Players who say that its flaws make it a masterpiece are FREAKS, CRAZY OR NUTS that because of the flaws or its short comings it is why they favourited the game. Hollow Knight reviews are mostly paid.
@@awakenedsoul2638 whats flaws ? These flaws can be only subjective but definitely not objective
@@Five_pebbles_official
FLAWS ARE FLAWS stop defending it because you like it. If you like it go ahead and keep liking it. I am telling the truth. I myself liked the game I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT. For now I stopped playing the game because the high-end laptop where I was playing it got broken so maybe I will resume playing it next year as I had just finished playing the third Trial Of The Fools. I opened the black egg temple, I can finish it if I want to but I decided to play it more completing some of the things I can still get before finishing it on my first play through. Playing the game, people said it was a masterpiece made the game SOOOO OVERRATED just because it is their favourite. They do not understand what masterpiece means. Because you liked the game and is riding the hype train does not mean the game is a masterpiece. A masterpiece have a meaning AND IS NOT SUBJECTIVE IT IS OBJECTIVE! I like the game yes but it is far from a masterpiece. People like me is telling the truth.
Hey folks! I'm nearly 30 hours deep in Hollow Knight now and I love this game so much. For this episode we tried to have a more casual chat about why we like each game rather than trying to prove which is better. I'm totally going to pick up Dead Cells once I'm done exploring Hallownest :)
The winner is broforce
hollow knight all the way
I love both games to death but HK for life, sorry dead cells but your one very expressive character can't beat HK's large amount of characters who are just so darn great.
but the combat is better in my opinion
but hollow knight can't beat dead cells combat
@@ridelbaker4607 But perhaps it can beat Dead Cells in exploration, or story, or sense of accomplishment
@@salgen1319 in exploration maybe for accomplishment and story oof i dunno man if u complete dead cells all the the way to 5bc(difficulty) everything will makes sense from the reason why the protagonist is in a prisioner body, why he can no longer die, whats really happen to the ppl in the island and etc the story in dead cells is top notch
3:38 For Dead Cells, I think it needs to be clarified that you bank your cells at the end of each "area" during a run. You only lose the cells from the current area that you haven't been able to spend yet. Also, blueprints aren't automatically saved, you still need to finish the area you found the blueprint in, or else you'll lose it if you die. It makes it a lot more nail biting, as you really want to survive an area if you've obtained a lot of cells or an awesome blueprint.
What about Hk vs salt and sanctuary? Which would you choose.
Have not played dead cells yet.
Salt and sanctuary is my preference, but hollow knight is incredible too. Beaten them both. Actually haven't tried dead cells yet
Hum... Dead cells is not a metroid vania... Like at all. Only 1 or two things are metroid vania like but it weights nothing aside of all the other gameplay mechanics. So bad comparison.
so it's not a 2d action platformer with heavy emphasis on combat and exploration?
@GRIFTY P Hey, first of all, there is not "heavy" emphasis on exploration in dead cells. Then Metroidvania implies that there is obstacles in the level design that can be passed only with power/item you get in progression 😊
You are welcome
Oh and I dont really count the 2 things that open in dead cells, thats not the point of the game, you could say there are influences but zelda is more metroidvania than dead cells
I'm really tired of people saying g Hollow Knight is just a 2d dark souls all because it has the death mechanic. It's like when people see that for the first time they go, "wait a minute...that's like Dark Souls, I'm now going to classify you as Dark Souls, just like almost every single game I've played since".
You guys should totally check out Vagante if you liked Dead Cells. I'd argue it's even more difficult, since there are no collectibles you could carry over in your next run. Also there are different classes to choose from.
They're both fucking amazing. I love seeing a Metroidvania renaissance blooming in the gaming world, as Metroidvania is one of my favorite genres.
I bought both about a year ago on steam at the same time (Probably within a week of eachother) and I can say without a doubt I prefer Hollow Knight to Dead Cells, although that being said they may sport the same genre metroidvania they are two games that play completely different and have two completely different aesthetics.... To anyone reading my comment and wanna try one of these games out go with Team Cherry's Latest and greatest Hollow Knight, they deserve every bit of support and are very active and have been disshing out free dlc ever since the get go and once you enter the lore of there world youll be asking "Dark Souls Who?"
I just can't stop thinking of the "fluid, rapid, rogue-lite" game that Filip Mucin reviewed
Easy, Hollow Knight 90 hours and I dont even have the 100%, its a masterpiece. Dead Cells 30 hours, its cool, already finished, not any much to do.
Hollow knight was great I got to 107% in about 60 hrs. Then did the speedrun challenges which is great also use guides if you have reached 100% yet
@Truth hollow knight has 60 hours only for the principal Game lol
no way u finished dead cells 30 hours with weapons unlocked, i bet u never played in higher boss cells
RIDEL BAKER lmao he probably hasnt got any blueprints neither higher boss cells and havent got the new outfitd
@@EduardoJesus1943 yep, i bet this guy never actually play dead cells , i mean if he's already get a taste of it, i think he'd know how long it takes to unlocked all the blueprints
These type of games are they best played on pc or switch?
Who else reads people's abbreviation of Hollow Knight as HK and immediately think Hong Kong. 🤣
wolfshot_ K yes im not alone
Hollow knight = Epic story, artwork, and music feel like decent of Symphony of the night in a bug world on steroids
Dead Cells = Straight up madness of speed runs which you would reply it over and over again
Hollow knight needs focus and play at home while Dead Cells you can play a quick run while outside or on the go.
Can't wait to play both of these.
Anyone played Salt and Sanctuary?
That’s a great game
Hollow Knight is about exploration for the story, it is an emotional game with complex characters and every place you visit, and every thought you read brings you closer to the hidden truth of yourself and the world you are in. It even has different endings, I mean, come on, dead cells is basically go, kill all these guys and get to the end
Both are amazing games. I play both. And playing both has made me realize, I don’t like dark souls, but I really like games with dark souls elements
Rogue-lite vs Metroidvania. No sense to compare them. You would be better off comparing Ori and HK.
I really like the guy sitting right side (Tamoor Hussain). His explanations are very clear and intricate! Very interesting to listen to. I now have to buy dead cell!
Love the art style, it's the reason I purchased it but I'm really not liking the game play. I'm about two/three hours in and just don't see the point. I'm walking around with not much to do. Obviously playing it wrong but would I be better going with Dead Cells or would I have the same issues?
Will Hurley yea that’s how I felt at the beginning of hollow knight but it really flashes out later, you just really gotta explore and take risks.
Everyone feels that way when they first play Hollow Knight. Also Hollow Knight is a game that is focused on exploration (mostly at the start) and descovering new location, charms, abilities and charecters. And the longer you play the more powerful you and your enemies and get. So please try playing the game for more than a few hours so you can experience why so many of us call it a masterpiece
Such a tough call. I give the slightest of edges to Hollow Knight, only because I am more of a story-driven player and the lore in that game is fantastic. Dead Cells is one of the most addictive games I've ever played though. It's basically a 9.5 versus a 9.4 for me.
Dead cells is good, but Hollow Knight is a complete Masterpiece.
Hold up right there buddy Play the whole game then judge a game and you have to learn the mechanics That you need upgrade one type of scroll because the damage becomes more 15% damage means 1-2
Then after 2-4 then 4-8 long story short you have to learn and play the whole game then judge it.
Yes apart from radiance
All the Switch needs is Death's Gambit
is it as good as hollow knight?
Zifer it is different. It ,IMO, plays a lot like at least mechanically similar to Hollow Knight.
Yes rumor has it coming to the switch
Death's Gambit is basically 2D Dark Souls. Everything from the character creation screen to the boss health bars scream Souls. They even poke fun at Souls' objectives in the game. Death's Gambit is FAR shorter and less metrodivania-esque than HK or Dead Cells. Great game, but again you can't really compare the three THAT much. If I were to compare them, I'd say Death's Gambit is closer to HK than Dead Cells. Also, Death's Gambit (On console anyway) has a ton of bugs and glitches right now. They need to patch it big time.
GTA5 , over watch, the new COD and the next elderscrolls. Throw in a real Pokemon game with a fresh and interesting mechanic that gives it hype and everybody's buying a switch
I prefer hollow knight :v
I thought everyone was over comparing these games. They are both fantastic games, but they aren't even close enough to a same genre for all the comparisons to make sense. Dead Cells is a rogue lite with some metroidvania elements in it. Where as Hollow Knight is actually a metroidvania. They are both incredible indie games that I highly recommend to everyone
HK is better but u can't compare those 2 games
I swear this was more of a friendly conversation what happened to the in your face vs that was in the start of this series
What is the game at 0:50? (after Celeste)
Owlboy
In my opinion. Dead cells is the best rogue lite on switch with 100+ weapons and several difficulty options for plenty of replay value.
Hollow knight is the best metroidvania on switch with a lot of exploration, upgrades, and secrets.
You can't really compare them. They are both great games in their genre and great value for their cost.
I'm playing Hollow Knight at the moment, the game is incredibly great. It may seem simple at first glance with a 2D world style, but once you embark on it, it absorbs you, with every new upgrade comes new areas I can reach. The bosses are challenging, most of the time you get so fkn nervous Lol you end up dying instead of patiently learn their fighting patterns. For a US$15 it is a jewel, I wish we have a sequel seriously!
This is like comparing our biggest nuke vs a bomb that would blow up earth
I own both games and love both of them. I am not sure if I HAD to pick one over the other if I could.
"I've put 10 hours into this game and it's challenging" -Latest victim of the death serum of godmaster.
They could have put me as a hollow knight reviewer and they would have got 6 times the experience. I've put 60 hours into this game and I know that this guy has next to no idea what he's talking about.
About the dead cells guy: He's a better reviewer but even he slips up at times. Like where he speaks about the vine rune to access an area.
My opinion: Dead cells is a marathon of death. You will have fun ,trust me. The combat system is godlike. But if you are looking for something which balances stuff out, which has lore, combat, platforming and much, much more then go for hollow knight. I mean the game costs 15 dollars and it's content is HUGE.
I think I’m going to move onto Hollow Knight. Dead Cells was an absolute blast for my first playthrough, but the tedium in the higher difficulties and lack of checkpoints starts to get old.
Nah you gotta be fast
I gotta say hollow knight. I enjoyed both but dead cells just became to repetitive the stem cells make for a nice change of pace but it’s still the same enemies everywhere with the same areas in the same order. Hollow Knight however, kept me engaged the whole way through and I’m yet to complete everything, still thoroughly enjoying the game.
what game is shown at 0:51 ??
Owlboy
I love deadcells the main reason being the combat and the feel. I also love how it looks amd the loop of the game it's tight. Haven't played Hollow Knight but it looks pretty good maybe I'll get it on a sale on PC.
The camel's back it's worth its pricetag man, the game has like 50 hours of great content and a super engaging story
H4x Styrofoam I’d say that, on a first play through, it’s usually Mitch more that 50 hours.
I like Hollow Knight so much. One time I played for 6 hours straight and forgot to eat lunch (all I had was a coffee) and it took my family coming home for me to snap out of the daze and realize that I was going to pass out if I didn’t eat something LOL. It’s so addicting and it’s exploration is so nice. I found myself remembering places that I didn’t even realize I remembered. Great mixture of creepy atmosphere and story too (:
Try Valdis Story: Abyssal City
Easily Hollow Knight, that game is on another level. Team Cherry created a master piece.
Didn’t expect to see a tde hoodie when I clicked this video
I can't tell. Are we talkin Top Dawg Entertainment or something else
hollow knight is about atmosphere and exploration of a beautyfull crafted world while dead cells is all about crazy combat and comming up with new builds every time you start a new run. right now i am way more addicted to dead cells its like playing a 2D diablo but if you die you can try again with a new playing style that is both random and of your choosing it feels like something i have never played before.
Im in love with dead cells these days.imma go for hollow night soon 2
I bought both games, finished both games and absolutely loved both games. I will never forget either of them so I feel like in a competition both win
Who would win in a fight
hollow knight is the more complete experience, but dead cells has more replayability.
Obviously lmao
I have played both of these games extensively and have to say the comparisons are apples to oranges here. The only similarities are the Metroidvania mechanics, and the fact it is platforming. Other then those two facts, extremely different. One is story driven and has much more in terms of narrative. The other is a Rogue-like game with randomized maps, in a run based gauntlet that is all about seeing if you can reach the end.
What’s the game at 0:50?
Owlboy, it's pretty good
These games are so similar yet so different.
I should get around to playing Rain World.
Everyone complaining about this comparison and here I am on the eshop with 20 bucks in gold and typed this in to make my decision between the two 😂
HK.
TDE hoodie is hard bro. i’m wearing the same one rn lol
There completely different games? I'm so confused with the title...
I bought both, love both and will keep playing both.
Hello I would like to address something first before I state my opinion on which game is better. A UA-camr called The Superforge has already covered this and there is no need to make a versus to each game if someone has covered it already. But anyway I think HK is better considering the bosses and lore are a little better tbh oh and the music can’t forget that.
And when you said Needle your wrong it’s Nail.
People keep saying they aren't comparable. They are, one is not better than the other though. The core combat loop (what you're spending your time doing most of the time) is what makes the games for different people or different moods. Dead Cells has super fluid, constantly moving combat (on Switch, swap A and RT and the game gets even more fast and fun) - you take damage when an enemy specifically attacks you. Hollow Knight has super specific, methodical-pattern based combat, but you take damage if you touch an enemy while not attacking. I enjoy Dead Cell's combat way more. It's what I want in a game that I play to unwind after a long day of work. Hollow Knight looks more incredible and I want to explore the world, but for me the combat feels more stressful, like work. I own both, play both, and love both. But I have more fun when I play Dead Cells.
FireBlaze525 I didn’t say that because it’s not accurate and why should anyone care which one I like better? I have more hours into the game, but I play dead cells more often. They both have a story and they both have combat, that’s not why I play these games so it’s not what I’m highlighting. Simplifying it to say one is better is to compare a sports car and a truck and say one is better. They are for different things and they do the those things better than the other. I enjoy fast paced dead cells combat way more and I like the super illustrated world and art of hollow knight way more. I don’t care for the story in either. Take from that what is useful to you.
What’s a switch?
Holy heck, this is like comparing the world heavyweight champion to the world heavyweight champion.
I love both of these, Hollow Knight is a trip, it changed the way I played games and it is a 20/10 game. Tight combat, great world, charming npcs, everything good.
Dead Cells is far more replayable, it has so much run variance, a compelling hidden story, amazing combat, such a great synergy system, everything good.
You get what I”m saying by now, these are both great. But them, now.
No mention of "A Robot Named Fight"?
Comparing the games are like pain(Hollow knight) or impatience(Dead cells)
I'd like to see a dead cells vs death gambit comparison...
"you can die so it's like dark souls huhuhu" right every games in the universe are dark souls now I forgot
Guy hasnt fought the radiance or any important bosses yet
what kind of stupid comparison is this?
hollow knight is a story driven platformer
death cell rouge-like platformer
just because they are both metroid like doesn't mean they fall in the same group Gungen is a better comparison for death cell and sundered is a better comparison for HK
ramtin d.h ..... Are you new to this series
ramtin d.h That's what I was saying! Setting aside the platforming and metroidvania mechanics, you have two totally different games. What it comes down to is preference. Hollow Knight has action in it, but Dead Cells is based completely around combat and upgrades with a story on the side. Hollow Knight is way more story driven with upgrades along the way as you progress through the game. Do you like story and more memorable characters, but you're also interested in a challenging combat experience? Are you not a fan of pixel art and do you want more content in a game? Then you want Hollow Knight. Do you enjoy pixel art and do you like frantic combat with an interesting upgrade system? Do you really love a challenge when it comes to combat? Do you care more about the action than you do story? Dead Cells is the game for you. I mean, don't get me wrong, I own both games and they're absolutely fantastic in their own way but c'mon. Comparing them like this is dumb.
After hearing both of your arguments here I am now swayed, they are different enough that the comparison does feel odd.
ramtin d.h Reddit says it's rogue-lite not rogue-like. Apparently there is a difference
Eh, I wouldn’t say Hollow Knight is story-driven...
This video is basically for hollow knight players who search for more metroid vania and see if it's as good
dead cells: has better combat and the randomized levels are unique, but not better than the systematically designed levels of hollow knight.
hollow knight: better is every other way
Hollow is amazingly though game and Dead amazingly though a little more rewarding than Hollow in turns of upgrades and Hallow is rewarding in terms of self skill satisfaction, the upgrades only help a little is your persistent that help you truly. Same in Dead but even if you keep repeating is not the same ant that makes the game fun every run
Personally i enjoy dead cells alot more, the raw combat is just much more appealing to me the. The slightly more tame hollow knight, plus things like finding new loot and blue prints felt much more exciting and rewarding than finding gem things in hollow knight (pretty sure they’re not called that) i was really enjoying the hollow knight until i got to the coliseum, it’s really uninteresting in my opinion, i feel like the combat lacks, energy, if thats the right word, it’s just boring even even with things like quick slash, i also found it more fun to combo items and weapons in dead cells given there’s more interesting status effects that make it real fun to try to squeeze maximum possible damage out of ur kit while trying to stay alive, coupled with the added tension of the rouge aspect giving death a real punch when it happened, i always felt the tension, and when i died i was just as energetic to go again.Granted death does have some meaning in hollow knight as it uses the ds mechanic of regaining souls upon death. But I rarely ever died twice before regaining them, and because theres no leveling mechanics in hollow knight money becomes practically worthless late game because enemies drop so much. And when i did die i would just make the small treck back to where i died and did it again. It may seem like i thought hollow knight was a boring mess, but in actuality i really enjoyed it, and i put more hours into it than dead cells, but i like to measure games in quality over quantity hours, and i just had way more fun playing dead cells than i did hollow knight, i think both are great games, but you should really do ur research if you plan to make a purchase. Ive been told that the you shouldn’t buy hollow knight unless you plan to 100%, but after seeing some of the quests and tasks you need to do to get that 100, i said “fuck that” and just stopped when i had felt i had my fun
Rancid I haven’t even tried dead cells but I agree because I like hollow Knight but I love games where u find random weapons & stuff (like enter the Gungeon)
Just play both! They are cheap and amazing in their own way. Also very different from each other
They aren't even comparable in my opinion. One is a traditional Metroidvania and the other is a Roguelike/Metroidvania hybrid. If someone forced me to pick one or the other, Hollow Knight would be my choice, but I think both are phenomenal experiences for their own reasons.
I think the more apt comparison is dead cells and binding of Issac, they scratch the same itch. That said, they are both amazing games - get both!
Is dat a Top Dawg Entertainment hoodie?
I would add for anyone going in Hollow Knight they should expect to be ok with being “lost”. The game is certainly paced. It makes you feel you are really discovering an underground world. No one will tell you where to go. You have to be ok with this unguided semi-slow progression.
I've enjoyed both of them so much
Hey!!! aw. I wil Buy Both of Them 🙋🙌🙋
Hollow Knight took a few hours for me to really get into but the lore, story, level up system is just TOP NOTCH!
