And, more importantly, believes in the human capacity for growth and change be it good or ill.
Two of my favorite portrayals in this moment: Beast Boy isn't some goofy comic relief character that throws a tantrum one episode, and is fine by the end, the series' trauma has piled onto him throughout. As someone who grew up hearing that same VA in teen titans, hearing them portray a depressed, broken Beast Boy hits Hard. And I absolutely Love Canary here. She isn't brought on keep the older people watching entertained, she's being genuine, pushing gently, but not overstepping, and is motherly, Finally a series makes use of her therapist background.
I love the way Young Justice portrayed Gar, it's the best in my opinion. They showed a real side to him, the side battling with depression, what he was masking by being goofy and happy. It's really sobering but refreshing to see.
Honestly, this HAS to hit harder for people with superpowers like there's an understanding of humans can only do so much but knowing you HAVE the power to do so much more and that you could have definitely could have changed their fates only to still "fail" must hit *HARD*
This is something I wish they dealt with more in these shows. Survivors guilt is real and it seems like if it’s brought up in the show at all it’s “fixed” rather quickly. This is the first time I’ve seen it actually presented as a long term battle to overcome.
Fun fact: This side of Beast Boy existed since decades ago. Beast Boy only jokes around because he is severely depressed. Before teen titans he lost an entire team that adopted him as his family and much much more, he is the punching bag of DC, never happy, always losing people.
All this has taught me is that every great team needs a dedicated therapist. Mans really went "Gar you were 8 years old..." "OKAY AND??? I COULD'VE CLUTCHED IT" "Bruh-"
This scene breaks my heart over and fucking over again and it was amazing. The deterioration of his mental health just felt so accurate. It may seem like a sudden snap, but this was built up YEARS in the making.
I’ve seen some people critique that if beast boy knows that he’s pushing people away why would he keep doing it, since pushing people away at your weakest is harmful to you. But that’s kinda the thing about being in a mental state like this when you’re dealing with past trauma and grief, you can know what you’re doing is harmful to you and everyone around you, and know that that’s wrong, but because of the pain and depression or your mental state, you just don’t care, it’s not in a malicious way you are just also riding out these intense emotions and it sometimes doesn’t matter how logical approach you and your friends can try to combat it. It just takes gentle patience and reminders that “it’s okay to sit with this pain” and just to try to ride the waves and keep hope that you will be ready to accept help once you’re ready.
Holy FUCK, I love the way they tackled mental health in this show. It made sense, didn’t feel forced, you learned from it and it can invoked an emotional response from the viewer. Masterclass in writing.
Beast boys arch was phenomenal, this is how you do mental health in a show. Especially on a type of mental health so dark in a show that is already pretty dark
The thing about the Young justice chronolgy that I like the best is that they actually address the fact that being a super hero would be super traumatizing.
The response for every person he’s lost and the responsibility/ attachment he feel he has for it hits hard. Like 😮💨 I had to take a breath on that one
I would say flash(more specifically Barry Allen) has an argument as well he had his mother killed in front of his eyes and had his dad blamed for it only to find out that a maniac was behind literally every bad thing that happened in his life and even when he got his powers he can't do anything to stop him (a lot of iterations of zoom is fast/stronger than flash) and the only reason he doesn't just kill him is cause he can't if not he stops existing so instead he makes his life living hell just so he could be a part of his legacy. He can't even go back in time without something like flashpoint happening so despite the fact he has the power to make his life what he wants it to be he can't without making it so the world goes to shit he literally had to stop his past self from saving his mother.
@@belethon Altho Barry does have the hardest time with knowing that he COULD save his mother but CANT use his powers to do so, I would say that he still is far from the most tragic character in DC comics. I'd say even Hal Jordan had a harder time or even Wally West who was literally phased out of existence and came back only to find out that he was forgotten and replaced by a different Wally West.
Meanwhile, Roy Harper, who lost his arm, his daughter and was addicted to drugs, had died and was resurrected, sitting in the corner having a pleasant conversation with Martian Manhunter, who has witnessed the genocide of his entire race and family from his evil brother.
This us defiently one of the saddest things to see. Seeing someone who was initially so happy, eccentric and goofy tearing themself apart over something and watching them lose that smile
I hate that they didn't give beast boy a moment with super boy after he learned he was alive like man was devastated and then just accepted superboy was alive
I loves Garfields voice in this. It's a very serious young adult take on his voice in teen titans. Where you can tell he's still got that chill attitude but here he is mentally struggling at every corner and his delivery is sending it.
As someone who, up until recently, didn't know they were suffering from survivors guilt... BB is a good representation of that powerlessness and that overwhelming pain... that you Comics... I love you...
Well yeah, considering how he never witness both of his mother's death in person, and the fact that he's surrounded by friends and the team to help support him when he's down, especially since they're also friends with the people who died. Batman didn't have anyone besides Alfred as he was growing up and he received training from teachers around the world to help train his mind.
Survivors' guilt is one of the most depressing things ever. Most of the time, it leads to suicide. I feel so bad for those who know what it feels like. Because I've been through it, too.
I relate to beast boy so much, especially in this moment. I have that thought too. “I just need to be better!“ It’s not a healthy mindset and I’m trying to work on it. My friends have been helping me by actually making me try to like myself. I think I’m getting closer but I’m still so far
It's like when you feel weak and helpless when you fail to save someone, that invisible scar grows and only thing you can do is just put the smiley sticker on it but inside it'll keep growing...

he's not coming back. the speed force doesn't exist in this universe, the creator confirmed it
Gar is a kind character with a gentle heart. Imagine having his power and still being absolutely powerless… Primates, Mammoths, Dinosaurs, some of the most powerful beasts known to the universe are his to control, and that brute strength is nothing. You can only fight in vain. I just want to hug him.
The way the VA Expresses emotion through Garfield is amazing and hearing it is also heart breaking because it feels real
Can I just say, Greg Cipes was the perfect casting for beast boy
You can and should say it!! 🤩
Well yeah he been playing the role for years now
@@AceXY7 20 years in fact!!!
Give his voice actor a oscar
I really feel bad for Gar...when he finds out that Jason is alive and has become the Red Hood I don't think he'll be able to handle it and there's a huge possibility that Gar will have a complete mental breakdown
Don't forget when wally comes out of the speed force.
Why is everyone saying jason hes mourning connor aka superboy
@@hampter8546 Connor does come back and him and Gar aka Beast Boy reunite I'm just saying that Gar won't be able to handle seeing Jason as the Red Hood....... seeing Jason on a killing spree would hurt him a whole lot worse because Gar may have known Jason when he was Robin and heard about his death
@@broly2316 yeah I know connor does come back I just didn't understand your comment
Hey what is this from? I’ve seen teen titans, teen titans go!, titans, and the old justice league show. What is this?
Beast boy was practically the itachi of teen titans, man's went thru real shit.
More like Sasuke or obito
All of the leaguers went through something. Each and every one of them has a dark past or trauma. This isn't uncommon.
They turned beast boy into his “last ronin arc” and he’s the Michelangelo VA too
Knew it.
he's also the og beast boy VA
@@chrysaliscrisis8530 I mean this the same show that has cyborg voicing like 6 other black dudes and not cyborg so 🥸
Well I know this is beast boy, but all I'm hearing is Kevin from Ben 10
God, when she says he was just 8 years old, he couldn't have done anything, and he says back he just needed to be better. That really hit a chord it shouldn't have for me lol. Having something traumatic happen when you're young and blaming yourself for the rest of your existence is hella exhausting i can attest to that. The voice actors did a really amazing job conveying that much deep emotion in a relatively short amount of time. Props to makin me cry over a clip lmfao :)
Losing someone close to you when you're young is hard, especially when it really was out of your control.
Yeah it is like i lost my father when i was 14 and it was and still is difficult to deal with
Yeah, I lost my bio father when I was 15. Was adopted at birth. Only saw him maybe 3 times before he died. Adoptive mother died in 2003. At least she died without knowing I had cancer. Dad couldn't come to see me because it was too much for him. Mom died 8 months before I got diagnosed
This is such a good portrayal of survivors guilt. It can be irrational, sometimes you find even the most impossible ways to blame yourself
People always forget. He's constantly fighting turning into a black mamba and assassinating villains. Becoming a peregrine falcon and flying to any location from 10 miles out too low for radar or detection, turning into a mosquito and killing people with malaria. Becoming a hippopotamus and severing their spines. A rock grouper and poisoning them. A t Rex and biting their heads off.
True. But when people realize a bunch of green and/or extinct creatures keep killing people and someone puts two and two together he’ll be in deep.
@@Bagmon amoeba. Eat their brain.
It would be dope asf tho to see him go full on vigilante and slaying villains in like a dark spin-off or something
@@Bagmon that's the beauty of it, because of the nature if his power he can be bugs, many of which are naturally green, turn into a local big fauna for a quick goreing and bug out

I just love how Black Canary help in this way. She's so sweet.
It’s criminal that YJ won’t get a 5th season
Fuck I’m tryna watch it and it already ended where can I watch it
Their fault, wasted two seasons on garbage.
@@theoutlawking9123 Fax bruh
agerded
@@theoutlawking9123 disagree man, the 3rd one had a fresh new team but was a little too over the place, the 4th was more streamlined but wasnt as unique. Some flaws sure, but it does not make the show garbage at all. The character work and exploration is still top tier. (Also if you hate it for LGBTQ+ rep or something like that, grow and change as a person, or kys)
Worst part of this is that it is very relatable for anyone who lost someone. Especially for accidents.
Lost my dad to a blood clot in his lung. The symptoms were starting to show that day and I knew what a clot forming looked like but I didn't recognize it. I was only a high school kid who had taken a lot of medical classes. I failed to see it and so did the doctors who were overworked to the point they couldn't look at him that day. Yet i still blame myself for not being able to help.
I know im not alone. I don't know how to help myself but I can try and help others.

I feel bad for em now that u brought it up 😕
actually it is batman
reason: He's Batman
Nope, forgot Jason?
This timeline beast boy goes through a lot😢
For anyone that wants the show name it is young justice
Him listing out so many people that died made my heart sink. For a lot of people it's usually just "My parents passed away" or "I lost my friend" but for him, it's just an endless cycle. It's easy for him to make friends but as a hero, it's just as easy to lose them.
“I should’ve have stopped it all somehow” hit really close to home.
Black Canary is the entire Justice League’s psychiatrist. Not because she’s the best at it, but because Batman is too busy
Edit: Yo, how tf is *THIS* my most upvoted comment on UA-cam?
Well, technically she's the Young Justice's psychiatrist.
Eh… would you really want BATMAN of all people to be your therapist?
@@klove5974 This version of Batman wouldn't be half bad. The only potential problem is that he would be quite blunt with his diagnosis and treatment of a patient. That said, this Batman also would not be heartless in said treatment, and would care about their success. Unfortunately, a lot of modern Batman iterations forget the fact that at the end of the day he does what he does because he loves people. And, more importantly, believes in the human capacity for growth and change be it good or ill.
Batman: "Why are you feeling guilty?" 🗿
she playing
Beast boy had the most tragic backstory and he is underrated asf
Watch the show lol
He has the most tragic in season 4
And a little bit in season 3
Beast boy has always been my favourite teen titan, but this clip made me relate to him even more
God young justice was an ace of a show, heartfelt comedic moments while also keeping the nitty and gritty things of a superhero world.
"I should've stopped her!"
"Gar, you were right"
survivors guilt really making me cry in a kids show huh?
I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED HER
"Yeah you're right. You should have"
This is basically what you put 😂
It’s not a kids show but aimed for young adults. Still tragic tho.
Two of my favorite portrayals in this moment:
Beast Boy isn't some goofy comic relief character that throws a tantrum one episode, and is fine by the end, the series' trauma has piled onto him throughout.
Props to whoever voiced Beast Boy in this, they did an amazing job portraying the emotions, really elevated the dialogue.
Its actually sad seeing a charming character like Beast Boy in depression and guilt :(
Fun fact: This side of Beast Boy existed since decades ago. Beast Boy only jokes around because he is severely depressed. Before teen titans he lost an entire team that adopted him as his family and much much more, he is the punching bag of DC, never happy, always losing people.
@@drakesacrum8445 team
Sometimes people laugh, so that they don’t cry… That’s Beast Boy
All this has taught me is that every great team needs a dedicated therapist.
Mans really went
"Gar you were 8 years old..."
"OKAY AND??? I COULD'VE CLUTCHED IT"
"Bruh-"
i think the most soul crushing part about this is hearing beast boys voice sad and depressed instead of cheery and fun
“I just needed to be better” pierced me to the soul.
Greg Cipes did so freaking good with Beast Boy!! Seriously though, Teen Titans and Young Justice??? He blew me away
I can hear hera (she is played by Vanessa Marshall) talking to Sabine and Ezra about their survivors guilt. I love how calm and soothing her voice is
The thing about the Young justice chronolgy that I like the best is that they actually address the fact that being a super hero would be super traumatizing.
honestly the fact that he survived all that is VERY impressive
The response for every person he’s lost and the responsibility/ attachment he feel he has for it hits hard. Like 😮💨 I had to take a breath on that one
If only someone told batman this as a child and he might not be as unhinged as he is
If someone told Batman to take a look at this kid he might not have broken down like this.
Beast Boy and currently John Constantine are DC's most tragic characters
Jason Todd still takes that title
Doomsday: *Growls in insulted*
I like how greg pulled his kevin voice out and mashed it with his classic beast boy voice to make Gar's character. It was perfect
One thing I have to give props to this show, is how they portray the horrible mental effects of being a young superhero
I loves Garfields voice in this. It's a very serious young adult take on his voice in teen titans. Where you can tell he's still got that chill attitude but here he is mentally struggling at every corner and his delivery is sending it.
Dang I had no idea Connor died. I need to catch up
I won’t spoil it but I will leave you hopeful, he aint dead.
@@BiG_WeWsie yet
Greg Cipes killed it, I don’t think I’ve heard him voice act that seriously before
Young justice by far portrays all these hero’s so well and they have so much depth behind them
The hardest thing about being a hero is that you can’t save everyone
As someone who, up until recently, didn't know they were suffering from survivors guilt... BB is a good representation of that powerlessness and that overwhelming pain... that you Comics... I love you...
Beast Boy still copes with his loss better than Batman. BB lost two sets of parents and he didn't become the Double Batman.
Because I've been through it, too.
young justice was such a good show
Man the acting so good that I just want give this boy a hug. 🥺😭
This is why I love Garfield.
Hes such a loveable character and when you find out about his backstory makes it heart breaking.
if this was a shonen anime this is the moment he'd trigger a new transformation
that sounds cheap.
They all need a giant hug and to be told, “your only one person you don’t need to carry all this pain in your shoulders just let it out sometimes”
Therapists for Superheroes must be one hell of a job, a simple burst of anger can end your life in a flash.
I relate to beast boy so much, especially in this moment. I have that thought too. “I just need to be better!“ It’s not a healthy mindset and I’m trying to work on it. My friends have been helping me by actually making me try to like myself. I think I’m getting closer but I’m still so far
Bro when he said Wally I bout cried. That shit so rough.
“I will be the most powerful. I promise you! I’ll even find a way to stop people from dying!”-Anakin Skywalker, Attack of the Clones.
He blames himself for Jason’s death? Now that’s the moment you realize you got a problem.
When the class clown finally stops laughing and breaks out their true self:
My one regret is that we never gotten to see Gar reunite with Connor or even his reaction to discovering that Connor was alive.
No one realizes how important it is for children and young teens to see even Heroes going to therapy.
Yes, It's such a powerful thing for a young audience
