    Awesome on so many levels; theoretical understanding, analysis, logic, and manual skills working with the microcircuits. Thanks so much for your comment! I have always thought vacuum tubes were very fascinating. I was lucky enough to have one instructor in the late 90's that loved talking about tubes and his past working with NASA. Everyone else in the class complained because it was just a basic level electrical theory class and he went so deep! I absolutely loved it, lost as I could be, but loved it! Your career sounds fascinating!
      Thanks again!

    Cost of repair vs cost of new? Most of us would just buy another one - we're a throw away society. All this was impressive - glad that someone understands it all. Well done. However, this makes me want to keep running my gas tools.

      All very good points. Just to make sure I explained it fully here. To be totally fair and unbiased, I purchased this broken off eBay. I do own a 16" and have had zero issues with it. This 14" I really bought just to see if I could fix it, so fair enough it failed on someone. Although I had to take some time to learn more about how it works and troubleshoot, it only cost around $1.79 each for the mosfets used to repair it. So I was happy with it for the price of around $45 for the broken item? I meant in no way to imply that Ego saws fail alot, nor did I mean to promote.
      I did however do a review on the 16" that I bought because I was truly impressed. Hope it clears up a little and thanks for comment.

Why: battery is only 56 V, the overall protective fuse was 40 amp, and the current is spread between multiple mofsets. They mofsets are failing because of overheating the heat sync vs overamps.

      I have not looked into the slow chargers really much at all. I have one video repairing a fast charger. I know they use the D-terminal to talk to the pack as well as the T-terminal for the thermistor feedback. So you would have to bypass all the microcontroller which might include current control as well as the cut on cut off. I would think it could be done, but if it would be easy to just build your own instead of all the time to modify this one, I'm not sure.

    Hey. Wondering if you know. Are all the ego chainsaw motors the same? I know the 18" is capable of more rpm...unless it has something to do with sprocket. But my (theory) is they are the same just the 14 and 16 are limited by speed control or something. Any thoughts?

    • @desotopete
      @desotopete 3 роки тому +1

      And...I bought the 16" thinking if they all share the same motor...less rpm over time would just be easier on the motor. Maybe this is an incorrect assumption.

      If I am correct the 14" and 16" are the same. The newer 18" model I believe has a different BLDC in it. They redesigned alot about it for sure. Like you mentioned it has more speed it also has more torque and most likely a much higher current speed controller. I do not have the 18" yet. So I have not taken one apart to know 100% sure though.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  Рік тому

      Awesome, one thing to check is if all 3 phases are balanced in current. You may have a Mosfets still not firing for example and causing one phase not to pulse/fire to get the full torque. Be sure to check the small gate resistors for all the Mosfets. I want to say they may be around 100 ohms from my memory, but that may be wrong. These resistors are easy to get knocked off or out of line when working around the SMD Mosfets area and I believe on a similar blower repair I may have shown one of mine move on me and I had to put it back in place.
      Hope it helps and best of luck to ya!

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  10 місяців тому

      The only way I can think of that would be cheaper is finding someone who might be willing to try the repair similar to how I did here. I am not saying it is the same issue, but might be a possible open Mosfet instead of a shorted one. It could also be a bad winding in the BLDC motor also. For that matter even a loose connection somewhere including the battery pack connections that only shows up when under load. The only other option than buying a new part,such as a controller, would be buying a used saw for parts only on Marketplace or eBay like I did this one. It's a long shot of course as they are hard to find and could even have the same faulty part as yours does. Thanks for your kind comment!

    I guess this was abused with excessive voltage, I tested one with 20s li ion, 80v and it not started, but it not was damaged, it still works fine, such motors and controllers are now common, on e bikes, hoverboards, e.t.c. It`s obvious if controller is shorted between rails power switches are damaged, but usually at least drivers are damaged too. Probably controller is easier to find than BMS because the usual fail is battery pack, or tool is mechanically worn , controller can be recovered.

Well especially if you price the motor or the controller parts! That is exactly why I shared a few videos about the EGO equipment. Yes that would be a lot of wattage for a step down. The peak torque typically is why the high wattage number like the 1000w etc. It would spike or peak and should come down some while running. Most packs have a fuse limiting the current to over 40A ( long term) in most cases. Some large packs go up to 60A fuse? Since the packs last surprisingly long it seems these don't take as much current to run as blowers. Blowers eat up a battery quicker than most tools...

      It is fixed speed on the chainsaw. Excellent question. I am unsure if the new 18" has variable speed or not.

    Do you think its possible to add a retro fit speed control without changing the speed controller?

      I do not understand your question?
      You mean leave the original in place?

      @@ThriftyToolShed hi, sorry i wasn't very clear. I want to add some speed control to my ego cs1800 as a project - a little bit like the Ego blower, and i see you have tonnes of experience with these tools, do you think its posible to wire in a POT to control speed? or do you think its necessary to swap out the ESC with a more advanced one?

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  3 роки тому

      Ok, I see. I know the speed control is similar to the blower speed control with more Mosfets populated due to heavy load, but I am not sure about the input. I would imagine the microcontroller in programmed differently for them, not sure though.
      It seems a new controller maybe necessary.

      Thrifty Tool Shed I’m 62 and dammit I was born on the Left coast. I’ve had enough of these crazy’s here. Maybe I could learn Georgia English and move. But I’m pretty sure you don’t want anyone from Ca. Wish my grandpa would of staid put in South Carolina.
