  • In this video I talk about why I chose not to pursue a pharmacy residency after pharmacy school. We also discuss the trends in pharmacy residencies over the years by taking a look at ASHP Match Trends. Then we discuss the pros and cons of a pharmacy residency and try to answer the question of whether or not you should do a pharmacy residency.

    Wow, I used to watch you a long time ago, maybe you convinced me to go to pharmacy school 😂. I graduated in 2016 and did not do a residency, but still ended up in a major hospital in Atlanta. I am now relocating to Washington State, applying to every hospital available. I did notice that a lot of positions do mention that residency is “desired”, however I’m hoping my years of experience as a clinical pharmacist will help. 🤞🏿

    Unless you planning to be instructor/ academia, researcher/fellowship, or concentrating in radiopharm, there is no need for residency. All you need is your continuing motivation and educating yourself. After 3 to 4 years you can get those board certifications. If you’re willing to relocate there are hospitals in rural areas that will hire you right from college. Work for few years and get as many certifications as you can and you will be good.

    Most hospital residency for pharmacists are telling students up front that they are NOT hiring anyone and are NOT looking to fill any positions within the hospitals. Now a days, residents are just being used as free labor. I know residents that have no clue what they are going to do now. The departments are being downsized and these residents feel like it was a waste of time.

      @@sharkparty1027 Thanks for the info. It is unfortunate that the corporate does not adjust pharmacists' pay according to each state's cost of living. $50/hr is really not that bad in the mid-Atlantic and rural parts of North East regions. Don't get me wrong. I think $50/hr is still relatively low for what students are investing in their education these days, but it is certainly not in a "very bad" situation here on the East coast.

    Very candid opinion! I graduated with my PharmD in 2011 (a year before you). I also applied PGY-1 and did not get matched. I was happy for not getting matched, so I ended up getting my PhD. As you said, the value of a residency depends on what field of pharmacy the graduates are getting into. If people want to do academia, a residency is a MUST. For a regular staff position at a hospital and in retail, residency is probably not going to make you stand out too much. Another key factor is location. Some rural areas of the country still have positions that need to be filled. In these areas, a competent fresh graduate could even get a clinical pharmacist position without a PGY-1.

    • @xigosutoxic
      @xigosutoxic 4 роки тому +2

      Not true. Diploma mills have been hiring fresh grads with no residency as faculty (for example, Chapman University in Irvine, CA) and you can't find hospital jobs without a residency even in BFE areas anymore. The days of "you can find a job so long as you move" are long over...

      @@sharkparty1027 I know places in West Virginia, western to central PA, and parts of northeast rural PA are still actively hiring. I know these are not areas for everyone, and especially for people that are used to CA. These places are cold and in the middle of nowhere. There are no real entertainment, but there are jobs. Over 95% of pharmacy graduates from my school have a job upon graduation. The quality of individual program matters. How they prepare their students for positions is the key. My school does a pretty good job for over two decades.

      Dr. Hong's Pharmacy Classroom 95% employment after graduation? That's a straight lie. You, like most pharmacy school faculty probably count residency/fellowship as "employment" to artificially inflate your numbers. Take those out or follow your grads over a 2 year horizon post-graduation then tell me what you get...

    Hi.. thank you so much for sharing this. I am wondering if you can explain what do you mean by “match” or didn’t match when applying for residency?

    • @DrHongsPharmacyClassroom
      @DrHongsPharmacyClassroom 4 роки тому +2

      There is a matching process in the residency application. Candidates rank their preference of residency programs after their interviews in the matching system. Each residency program also ranks their preferred potential resident. E.g. if you rank residency A is your number 1 choice, and residency A also ranks you as its number 1 choice, then you are matched. If the program ranks you as the number 2, and rank your friend as the number 1, and your friend rank the program as the number 1, your friend will be matched. You will not match. BUT, if your friend does not even rank the program A in the list, then you will be matched with program A, because it automatically falls to the second in preference. It is a complicated system that has flaws. Sometimes there is luck involved if you are matched or not. I have seen too many excellent students who did not get matched.
