Fun Fact: Dwayne Johnson tried to sing along with “You’re Welcome” when his kids were watching this movie. His daughter told him to be quiet because he was ruining it 😂
RIP uncle
And she doesn’t believe he’s the original voice of Maui 😂
Awe...kids...
I remember seeing that video it was so funny 😂
Lol, love that they don't realize or care.😂
as a person who suggested this several times, I just wanna say: you're welcome 😉
Thank you for watching ❤️
🤣🤣 I see what you did there
Actually I suggested this too once
Very funny UUUUAAAA!!! 🤙🏽
🤣 well done!
Fun fact, there is a period in Polenesian history when they stopped sailing to new islands. For around a thousand years, then suddenly they started sailing again, no one really knows why they stopped, or started up again.
I like to think this story explains the gap. 😊
Awesome
Wow😊😊😊😊😊😊
"Moana, your sister just got done telling you..."

This movie means so much to me and my people as a Polynesian! 💛Maui is a real legend across many different Pacific Islands nations and all those tales about Maui dragging the sun so we have longer days, creating coconuts through eels, etc were all stories I was told as a baby. We view the ocean as its own living, breathing being and the thing that connects the islands through voyaging and gives us life through food and water. Moana's grandma was represented through the sting ray.
It's funny bc it was just so happened they ran into Islands and Polynesians wanted a way to explain it so the created Maui XD
you have a very beautiful culture 💛
As a palauan, i relate.
Except they got Maui body shape wrong.which is dissapointing!! Hes supposed to be Slim and muscular. But overall great movie!
@@Iam_Diamond that’s the argument that has been portrayed but ye great movie
Fun fact: if you look at the tapestry above Grandma Tala's head while she's lying in the tent, you'll see a stingray which is what her spirit comes back as, like she said. It's such a bittersweet easter egg
Manta Ray*
She literally has a giant manta ray tattoo on her back and calls it her spirit animal
"The tapestry here on my skin, is the map of the victories I win!"
What blows me away is that Auli’i, the voice of moana, was 14/15 during recording for the movie! She is awesome
No, she was 16. How come all of y’all are getting this wrong
@@imahotmess872 she was 16 when the movie was released. During the audition she was 14 and she turned 15 during the recording. The voice acting is finished long before animation. The movie premiered November 23, 2016. Her 16th birthday was the November 22nd. So unless she recorded anything less than 24 hours before the premiere... she was 15 😅
honestly shocked to see another dm channel lolll
@@LavenousForever lol
And she ad libbed the "you're so amazing" to Maui
Polynesians believe that the ocean is alive with a personality and moods. That's why the ocean is animated like it's a character in the story.
The chicken is voiced by the great Alan Tudyk.
In Māori culture the ocean is personified by the god Tangaroa. The god of storms is Tāwhirimātea which is why the ocean appears to be working against Moana sometimes - Tāwhirimātea doesn't get along with the other gods and doesn't like humans.
I love Alan Tudyk so damn much. He just commits to every role. He's such a lovely person too, so genuine.
A video that lives rent free in my head is Alan Tudyk at the mic doing chicken noises. Then he looks at the camera, laughs, and says "I went to Julliard."
Mr. Tudyk also does the voice of Villager #3 - the one who asks (referring to HeiHei): Couldn't we just...cook him?
All hail Mr. Alan "Weaselton/Weselton/Turbo" Tudyk~~~
“Welp grandma looks like I’ll be seeing you soon “ 💀😩🤦🏽♀️😭 good Lord Billy
Apparently, in Polynesian history, they stopped sailing for a thousand years then started up again. Not explanation, no reason. Just randomly stopped. I believe they made this to be sort of a fictional explanation of why that happened. I’m not entirely sure though, there are probably many details I’m missing. But it’s still cool :)
They stopped because the ocean waters were more aggressive things changed because of mawi
@@alithair929in real life, not in the movie
My favorite part about Hei hei is that he has an award winning Voice Actor- Alan tudyk. There is a video of him doing his lines where he turns to the camera and just goes. . . "I went to Juliard"
He's smiling when he says it ... kinda.
True Facts: Every main voice actor in this movie (aside from HeiHei) is of Polynesian or Pacific Islander heritage.
The animators had a stand in Polynesian woman demonstrate how her hair looks and moves while wet vs. dry so they could get Moana right.
The traditions of telling stories by tattooing them on your skin as a right of passage is still practiced today. Dwayne Johnson (Maui) followed in his grandfather's footsteps by getting the tribal looking tattoo on his shoulder.
If I remember correctly, Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana, reprised her role as Moana in a Polynesian language dub.

WHAT .... what did you say?
🤔🤨🧐
Depressing Trivia Time:
The reason the grandmother died was because the Heart was what had been sustaining her. When she gave it to Moana to give back, she gave away the only thing that was allowing her to stay alive. Without the Heart, she more than likely would have died many years before.
Oh my god ...
Why does this not make any sense to me?? The heart never belonged to her in the first place so why would it be the main thing that is keeping her alive when she was only keeping it to give it back to Moana when she was ready to return the heart....if the heart had to be returned to save the Island and we all knew this.....why would that be the main thing keeping the grandma alive?? Whats the connection with grandma and the heart?? Doesn’t make any sense
@@dontworryaboutit6669 The Heart is essentially the pure essence of life. It's not about whether or not it "belonged" to her. The Heart *is* life. When the Heart is placed with Te Ka that's why she returns to being Te Fiti, an island full of the energy to grow and bring life.
@@dontworryaboutit6669 Hun, theheart belonged from the goddess of life (I think that's the correct term?) and it's magical so we can assume that it has the power to keep people alive! (which might have been why Maui stole it for the humans who asked him to)
@@LittleHobbit13 but when the heart was on the Island the Island was still dying away. 😭 it doesn’t make any sense why her having the heart is what’s keeping her alive??

@@Mysteriousheadlines NAHHHH the last one is trash the second one is worth a movie ticket but the first one, that's where it's at
@@myajenkins452 I agree. But I feel like he still has to watch all 3 to form that opinion on his own
@@Mysteriousheadlines yeah your right, but that's how I FEEL he can do whatever he pleases I feel the way I want to. Its all good tho 🤣
@@myajenkins452 I'll agree the first movie was brilliant, but I'd say the last one was okay, the middle one was absolute trash; Rebel's ego and need for her character (Fat Amy) to be the center of attention ruined it; at least in the last movie, that element was a bit more under control. My only real gripe with the third is, I really wish they'd showed more of _how_ the Bellas won over the other groups rather than just handwaving it away...I mean, we all know it was going to happen, but showing the rationale is the absolute minimum they should have done scriptwise and they didn't even do that! Having it "just happen" because the Bellas are the protagonists is lazy, sloppy, MarySue-ish writing. I blame Rebel for that too.
There's one line in "Shiny" that has no right being that serious in a song like that. "Far from the ones who abandoned you, chasing the love of these humans who made you feel wanted."
"She went from Moana to Moses" the way I CACKLED LOLOL
#bingers You should do some Dreamworks ones, like How to Train your Dragon, or Kung Fu Panda. Or some stop-motion creepy movies, like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, The Corpse Bride or Paranorman.
I second Kung Fu Panda & Corpse Bride specifically!!! They dont get enough love!!

Ngl I thought it was a lego movie reference
10:21 She’s in the Mid-Southern Pacific. It’s tropical islands, I don’t think “cold” is a thing

-Billy calls "Shiny" his fav song in the movie
*Schaffrillas has entered the chat*
In case you didn't catch it, the grandma was being kept alive by the Heart of Tafiti. When she gave Moana the Heart, her age finally caught up with her...
It's more that she had a commission to discharge before she went. The Heart itself wasn't keeping her alive, I don't think, but she had to pass on the knowledge of their people's past history as voyagers and the Quest to restore the Heart; or else she’d be leaving with unfinished business.
When Moana left gave me the same energy when Mulan left home
2 of the best Disney movies too!
"I have crossed the horizon to find you"
Me Everytime:😭😭😭😭😭😭
One of my favorite themes throughout this movie is “you know who you are”. It is said to Moana by her grandma when she is about to give up and said again to te fiti by Moana when restoring the heart. It’s also reflected in the islanders becoming voyagers again and rediscovering their love for the ocean. Such a beautiful movie with so many layers!

Btw Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the songs for this movie and Hamilton.
Christopher Jackson is the singing voice for Chief Tui and the guy who plays George Washington in Hamilton.
The speaking voice for Chief Tui is Temuera Morrison (best known outside of NZ for playing Jango Fett in the Star Wars movies I think).
he also sings make way
Adding onto the Hamilton/Moana fun-facts: Phillipa Soo, who originated the role of Elizabeth "Eliza" Hamilton performed a demo version of Moana's song "How Far I'll Go" backstage at a Hamilton performance right on Lin's phone. She also sung as a villager for the film.
I was late on this movie, but it was amazing. When I realized the identity of Te Ka at the end, just when Moana did, I was blown away by how great and how appropriate it was. A goddess of life turned into a goddess of death. Very true to mythology. Although I'm not really keen on the Shiny song. I'm more a fan of "You're Welcome" and "I am Moana" songs.
PLEASE do hunchback of Notre Dame, you’re not READY for the songs and the messages
The Emperor's New Groove is a gem that many people miss. Yzma and Kronk (voiced by the legendary Eartha Kitt and Patrick Warburton) are the greatest villain and sidekick combo in the Disney catalog.

@@BillyBinges Jemaine Clement voices Tomatoa - you may know him from Flight of the Conchords or the villain in the final MIB movie. He's also doing a damn fine David Bowie impression here.
When this movie first came out, I used to live in Hawaii. At the time I had learned a lot about Polynesian culture, so it was awesome to see s film dedicated to that. My school even took us on a field trip to watch this movie.
fun fact about the soundtrack: Lin-Manuel Miranda, the guy who came up with the musical Hamilton, was heavily involved in the makings of it...that's why it's so freaking good
The other half of why it's so freaking good is because Te Vaka were involved in the makings of it. I discovered them thanks to the film, and the "Laka Laka" music video has become one of my go-to mood lifters. The song that plays at the very beginning and the one that plays when Moana finds the Heart are 100% Te Vaka. (There may be more throughout, I can't remember now.)
Then the combination of Opetaia Foa'i and Lin-Manuel Miranda has led to something pretty incredible here...
So you know that Lin Manuel Miranda was the songwriter for this movie, right? I'd love to see you do Atlantis the Lost Empire or Tarzan. #bingers
I came to the comments to tell him about Lin... The man is a musical genius!

Auli’i Cravalho is the voice of Moana! She does have an amazing voice and also happens to kind of resemble Moana. This was her first big project. She’s also been in the show Rise that was sadly only one season along with the Netflix movie All Together Now plus even portraying Ariel in The Little Mermaid Live. She sings in all of those! I love her overall aura and the way she nails what she needs to do.

I just came across this page by chance. I gotta say that I love your energy.
When I saw Moana the first time it was in theatres, and while the songs and the story are both awesome, the Animation is what amazed me most of all. Same with both Frozen 1 and 2. All 3 movies are ones I watch all the time, and people think I really like the movies, but mostly I just love watching every individual drop of water and strand of hair in Moana, and how you can see the individual stiches and threads of fabric in Elsa and Anna's clothing.
Disney has really stepped up their animation game.
"This song has the same energy as Hercules's 'I Can Go the Distance.'"
There's a Mashup on UA-cam of those two songs. You should look it up
Similar to how “I See The Light” has a similar energy to “A Whole New World.”
This sounds so cool going to have to hunt it out after I finish watching this
"Hey Hey needs to stay stay!" I think I died!
Fun Fact - the character Maui is actually based off a real legend. In New Zealand, their legend is that the North Island is Maui's boat and the South Island is a giant fish. The legend tells that Maui was fishing in his boat when he caught a fish, but it was actually the south island. And thats how the south island was made. I've been to NZ 3 times and I love their stories and legends.
It’s the other way around cousin the South Island Te-waka-a-Maui (the boat of Maui) the north island Te-ika-A-Maui (the fish of Maui)
I think my favorite thing about this movie is that it just has a large central focus on women helping women and it's so wonderful!

Not only did he do the singing, but Lin Manuel Miranda only wrote "You're Welcome" when he was told The Rock would be singing it, cause he knew no one else would still be charming with that song.

There's also an in-joke in the song 'You're Welcome', when he mentions that 'Maui can do anything but float'. Obviously a reference to Dwayne Johnson's nickname.

Your reaction was so fun! I’m not surprised you liked the music - Lin-Manuel Miranda (of Hamilton fame) wrote the lyrics for this. And Christopher Jackson (who originated the role of George Washington in the musical Hamilton) voices Moana’s father in this movie. :)

I love this movie and especially the music because it gives a great description of Island life and culture. I lived in Hawaii for 3.5 years, and I still carry that time with me today, people are genuine, and they truly love their land. And it's like that for most islanders... Samoans, Tahitians, Fijians, Hawaiians, all of them. You need to listen to some Hawaiian music, and not the touristy kind, real shit. It's so beautiful and inspirationsl. like this music.
I was so excited when this came out because it was written by the guy who wrote Hamilton. And then finding out Christopher Jackson played the father. I couldn't wait. And this movie did not disappoint me. I love the message of this movie so much.
I think “Shiny” is one of my all-time favorite Disney songs, it’s just so fun and catchy and I always love a good Villain Song.
