    I know this is an oldie video but I have been using the HD1 for a while now and it’s one of the BEST portable radios I have ever used. Everyone talks about the build quality and how excellent it is and they are all spot on. If someone were to hand me an HD1 with a Motorola logo on it, I would have 100 percent believed it was their radio. It’s solid, good weight and looks professional and not chintzy like most ham radios. I’m looking forward to Ailunces next generation of this unit.

    Well if anyone says these reviews don't work you can give them this......I am going to buy one of these and only because I saw this on your channel and then looked further......to be honest I don't even need one, but what the heck, it will be handy to have and is cheap.

    Thank you for this thorough review. I'm new to the amateur radio scene. I got a Baofeng last week, my coworker saw it, and told me to get a better one. He recommended this one, and showed me his. Mine should be delivered tomorrow. I'm excited to get it.

    well I was on the fence, a dstar or fusion radio because of the quality and this just sold me, it looks like its built like a tank, no dodgy work inside, all gasketed, alloy body and 1/2 the price of the competition

    Thanks for this detailed tear-down! Much appreciated. Still not sure which of these radios to consider but now I know a lot more about this model.
    RE: the "hidden" broadcast FM feature... Broadcast FM radio functionality is not only of interest to people who might want to pass the time listening to music on the jobsite or whatever... consider the potential usefulness of tuning in to a broadcast radio station for updates in a variety of emergency situations. There are better options if you're looking for weather information but in a disaster situation... you might not have another way of easily finding out what the official version of events is.

    Good review Mike. You might want to do an update since Retivis / Ailunce has come up with an update in their firmware that doubles the 100,000 to 200,000 without a trip to the service bench. This is clearly a good company that continues to provide support for their products AFTER sales. 73

    I just bought an Ailunce HD1. Great video !
    Talking about using direct conversion only in small hand held radios, FYI, TYT makes the MD380, a DMR HT with a superheterodyne receiver. It comes in either VHF or UHF. They also make a waterproof version , the MD-390. Very tough little radios.

    By far the best review on UA-cam for this radio! You did however make a few mistakes as you said 443mhz was vhf and 145 was UHF when it is obviously the other way around:). Also encryption is still not allowed on the UK and US ham radio licences but Ailunce probably copied the features of radios of the likes of the md390 which were designed for commercial use. Thanks for the great review and keep up the good work! 73 from M0JKE

    Actually have a set of the owl walkie talkies and my kids love them. They run on frs 500mw, 467.5625 dcs is 306. They have pretty good range even thru houses which uhf is good for building penetration. Id recommend them for kids and I also have the HD1 and love it. The feel reminds me of the old Motorola Saber portables that Pennsylvania State Police here carried. Also there is a debate on the antenna impedance, Ive seen specs of 80ohms and also 50ohms.

    Is there any plan to add a CC, TG, TS, Radio ID scan 4 Penny transmission being received on VFO ?
    The biggest problem I am having is I cannot find a DMR radio that when put into promiscuous mode, will receive any DMR transmission and lock on to it, and decode it, and display the color code, the talk group ID, the time slot in use, and the Radio ID so that I can copy down the information to then add the channel into a memory slot on the radio.
    My WS1080 scanner does some of this and my uniden 996 P2 with the DMR upgrade does some of this but not very well
    I know I can program in 16 different memory channels with a different color code for each channel for the same frequency and scan but there has to be a way for the company to add this feature into the radios firmware
    Even if it means creating a special Bank where you would enter in a frequency and the radio went in essence do exactly the same thing and create 16 temporary virtual channels that it would scan a different color code for each one of those channels and then display the one being used for the current transmission along with the time slot and the talk group ID and the radio ID in use at that moment
    As DMR is becoming more widely used we have multiple agencies and companies using the same frequency and using different color codes and talk group ID combinations as well as time slots to create separate "channels" for each user.
    At the moment I have a frequency that is only supposed to have one user on it using color code 3 talk group 2 time slot 1 and I have two other users using that same color code and different talk groups that I cannot identify as well as 12 other users using some other color codes and other talk groups and time slots and I cannot even begin to figure out what they are using because I can't find radio that can scan and display this information so that I could program in the settings to be able to know when they are transmitting and record them to try and figure out who they are.
    If anyone knows of a radio that can do this please let me know.
    The WS 1080 is the best I've found so far but still is not that good without having some of the information programmed in
    I'm not sure why it's so difficult for radio to be able to decode this information but it must be very difficult because no one's been able to make a radio to do it yet and this looks to be the best candidate to try and get the manufacturer to update the firmware to have this capability

    I've got some screen issues and I want to reseat the display flex cables. I've taken the 6 screws out from the back, but am unsure of how to remove the metal plate from the front of the radio. Can you give me any tips? Does accessing the display flex cables require the de-soldering of the antenna mount?

    Hi Mike nice review and teardown (first time I have seen that in a handheld radio review) the Retevis and TYT radios are very good I have the MD380 UHF DMR badged TYT and both the Retevis RT2 and TYT DFUV10 Dual band DPMR digital PMR radios which are great, another interesting little DPMR UHF only radio I have from China is the realy small Recent RS309D 3w radio 400-470MHz PC programable also in a less featured option the RS308D but like most Dpmr radios made in China they have a specific vocoder so they only talk to each other in digital mode or a few other brands, even with the restricted power and strange vocoder choice they are great for standard analog PMR due to the restricted power setting in the program software and amateur use with all the repeater settings available when programing also a fantastic whisper mode which realy works well, cheap as chips feel great in the hand built very well and receive and transmit better than my old FT51r on 70cm, I have seen a lot of these little radios being sold into mainland Europe and I would think they are being used as PMR radios as they have public PMR repeaters over there.

In my ear sound the Softwaresolution of the DMR Encoder not so clear then the AMBE+ Chip set for example the Clipping Sound from a Retevis to a Hytera make not fun because this to understand is heavy for my ears. @@mikesradiorepair - If you cross reference the FCC ID number it will probably certified for Part 90 service in the U.S. Encryption isn't allowed on the amateur radio bands but, can be used for business use, etc. You're holding a commercial radio instead of one designed specifically for amateur radios use, that's why it has built in encryption.

    The Chinese company's are notorious for providing "samples" of their goods that are in spec and sometimes built especially for "sample " testing.
    Now I am not saying this is the case here, but be informed. I have seen too many times that Chinese manufacturing loves the old bait and switch game.

    Hardware reviews are great, but I have never seen a software review. There are two major problems I have seen with software. First of all, very few software engineers for manufacturers seem to be radio savvy. Case in point: Admit Criteria is actually BCLO (busy channel lock out) DUH. There are other issues too, just too many to talk about. Here is a big one: the fact that the scan banks are programmed on a per channel basis and not per zone. This is ridiculous. Every other radio I have ever owned scans on a per bank, or ZONE basis. I do not know if it is a limitation of the firmware and/or software, but that has to change. It requires me to duplicate channels numerous times and attach different scan lists to each one. Pretty silly. I'm sure I am not the only one that travels quite a bit and needs to scan on a geographic basis, in other words, scan the channels that are active in the area I am presently in. To me, this is the largest headache about programming these radios.
    My other issue with software is that I have not seen any video, documentation, or ANYTHING going into detail about what all the features do on a DMR radio. I have had to figure them out on my own and there are still options I do not understand. The manufacturers have dropped the ball here. This is a very large problem: not understanding all the programming features. I just think it is a sad situation.
    On the comment about privacy, or SCRAMBLING, yes you CANNOT do that on amateur frequencies, but you can on itinerate (unlicensed) channels. REMEMBER it is a wide band radio covering many different radio services. I see this come up on many other reviews. Everyone reviewing a radio should do their homework BEFORE doing a review. Also the proper terminology about the technical aspects and what things are called would be a good start. It is a reflection of what you really know, or rather, what you don't know.
    I thought your review was quite long and should have been edited to size it down, but overall, the best I've seen yet. I would have liked to see you disassemble the radio and then put it back together though.

    21:54 -- I thought the radio blew up... my jaw dropped. Didnt even show the breakdown, just pure explosion of parts LMAO OMG......
    I have a Baofeng UV-5R+ and hate a few things about it. Its hard to program manually as you cant step to the channel you want to program, makes it a pain in the ass.
    I would love to click and go to Channel 7 (for example) then program my frequency to that channel 7.
    UV-5R+ I get lost all the time specially if I want to put a new frequency. (its hard to explain what I am trying to convey). Its a cute radio, specially for people who are just starting out in HAM.
    the radio is just a real pain in the ass to do anything with and people are seriously forced to buy a cable to computer program the frequency with CHiRP.
    If you needed to do a quick few channel frequency changes on field, you would be seriously screwed because you will get lost really quick and even lose some frequency at the same time.
    omg its just so exhausting to operate

    Best DMR/Analog portable I have owned. The ONLY one that you do not need to create a separate scan bank for each channel. It actually scans by ZONE, which the others don't get yet. I was even able to move my 600+ channels from my TYT to it without reprogramming because they are all basically spreadsheet programming. So until something better comes along, this is it till then.

    unfortunately you missed a big problem these radios have which is the rf amplifier stage is not designed for 50 ohms, the antenna they come with match the radio but I think from memory they are designed around 30 ohms

    • @malcyjb
      @malcyjb 5 років тому

      Seems everyone missed this...!! no other replies... quite extraordinary.
      People, it can make it impossible to use an external antenna... the only way it seems to get Aliunce to do something is for people to highlight this and get them to send out a hardware update fix, it needs a small balun which can screw onto the SMA output connector for ext use, so before you buy, ask them if you can use an external, see what they say.... their answer is only use low power... great..!!!

    The HD1 has major issues. After 6 months of use and I'm not the only one it has a white screen of death. I checked the ribbon cables as they say on the company site and I've check the firmware version trying many different. Dealing with the company or the seller is ridiculous 😡.don't buy it unless you want to send it back to China to receive the same faulty parts I've wasted hours and I've given up.

    Dmr is bad for military specs, is very prone to malfunction. Digital technology could fail at any moment

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  6 років тому +6

      The military has been using digital for decades. I was using frequency hopping encryption radio systems in the Army in the late 1980's.

      MikesRadioRepair That doesnt mean it is reliable in a emergency Situation, okay go with dmr but prepare to be attacked from its vulnerabilities. Even analog systems nowadays use microelectronics and are susceptible to malfunction. Microelectronics will be useless in a future warfare, Einstein said something about it.

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  6 років тому +6

      ROFL. The last thing I'm worried about is "future warfare". I'm a few minutes away from the tunnel (site R). If a nuclear war happens I'm dust and there's nothing I can do about it. Having a working radio isn't going to do my charcoaled body any good.
