  • The Irwin Sailboat DIY Restoration Project Week 31 Episode 55 is full of suspense, frustration and heartbreak! But, it's also full of excitement and blessings!. This week we finally find out if our 1980 4 stroke 80hp (horse power) Marine Diesel Ford Lehman Motor is ready to start, run and get back into the adventure after being completely seized up for years. We have completely rebuilt and restored this motor in its entirety. We had the block bored out, the head resurfaced, a valve job done, the injectors and fuel injection pump rebuilt. We replaced all the hoses, the coolers, the pulleys, the heat exchanger, the starter, the alternator and the belt. We also replaced both the water pumps and the fuel lift pump. We took apart every single piece and reconditioned, restored, replaced, or renewed it. It's been greased, oiled and painted. It's been loved and hated! We have had unbelievable help and learned an unquantifiable amount of lessons. Now it's time to see if it's all going to pay off!

    I don't understand why this channel isn't gaining more traction. Yes, there are issues, but the enthusiasm and the kids involvement makes up for a lot.

    So cool that you’re doing it as a family.
    My constructive feedback as a marine engineer would be to get rid of the perforated hose clamps you’re using and swap with some 316 bolt clamps or some non perforated hose clamps. Mikalor brand or similar.
    The reason is the perforated clamps are much weaker and if they get some crevice corrosion on a corner they can just pang off and your hoses can have a major leak.
    That being said, that’s a nice looking refurb!

    Always use two hose clamps where they will fit. It’s a cheap way to make sure the water stays on the outside.

      We kept track of every penny. Kept every receipt. We thought about putting a video together with all of that but haven’t really started putting together how that would look. Go to our instagram (theazimuthadventure) and message us there or our gmail is the same name too and we can answer any specific questions you have. Happy to help out.

    It may only be an 80hp D-series Ford but you really should have 6 not just 3 bolts holding the driveplate onto the flywheel. Also we fit a glass bowl onto the first CAV 7111-296 fuel filter mounted onto the engine so you can see any dirt or water that makes it thru your primary filter. Also invest in replacing the rubber hoses with silicon ones. You never need to undo the injector pipes at either the injector pump or the injectors to get any 4 or 6cylinder D-series Ford running. Bleed the pump at the front only bleed screw. Pop the cold-start or excess fuel button then crank the engine and the engine will fire up within 3 to 4 revolutions. Been rebuilding these engines and their injector pumps and injectors for 40 years now on all Fords from 40hp to 375hp plus.

      Yeah, I saw that he opened the wrong bolts too. Just those 2 front bleed bolts on the fuel pump needed to be cracked and she would have fired right up.

    That 90 degree elbow on the bottom oil pan, is it brass?

      I am going to have to double check. I didn’t question it because it came in the kit from American Diesel Corporation. It should be appropriate for marine applications. They have not steered me wrong yet.

    Hi there, 7 min in and I notice you don't have dual clamps on your hoses. You need dual clamps on coolant hoses and they should be turned 180 degree from each other. It's because if your hose clamps brake when you only have one, you get a major leak. With 2 you have a safety clamp if one brakes.

      We have a friend here at the yard we are working at that said the exact same thing but we were unsure if this applied to the motor or just to the rest of the boats plumbing systems. There are a few connections on the motor that I don’t believe I will be able to fit two. Are there exceptions to this rule?
      Thank you for watching and sharing! We appreciate you!

    • @SwedesGarage
      @SwedesGarage Рік тому +1

      @@theazimuthadventure2138 In places were you can't fit 2 clamps I suggest you invest in some high quality clamps. Maybe in a different style less prone to brake, got to be SS clamps. And the dual clamps apply to all the hoses were sea water could fill up the boat, if a fresh water (coolant) clamps brake, the only risk you have is to overheat the engine.
