    also tip: when doing the stretch where u pull your hands down 9:06 try not to hold it too long or do it too too much bc my therapist (i used to go to hand therapy) said that helps but doing it too much could end up hurting your nerves so be careful !! (also all of the stretches tiff showed is literally all the stretches my therapist showed me so GOOD JOB TIFF)

    No joke you ARE an athlete, as guitarists say "we're athletes of the fine muscles, not the big ones" and it's the same with any hand-intensive craft.
    Taking care of what you've got is sooo much easier than fixing problems and changing bad habits down the line. Glad you're spreading the good word about ergonomics and self care!
    PS I don't even knit I just watch your videos for the cozy vibes 🌟

    Your advice about circular needles is so on point. I recommend everyone who is sure that they like knitting (and not just trying it out) to invest in a good set of interchangeable circular needles. I remember one time, right before I got my first interchangable set, I didn't have the right size circular needles for a kit and had to use the straight needles that came with the kit. My hands hurt, I had to move the needles a lot more, and I felt like I was taking up a seat and a half on the couch because the needles were like swinging everywhere. Circular needles are amazing, and if you get a set, you will literally never not have the right size needles

    • @kedeeky
      @kedeeky 2 роки тому +3

      I’m a huge fan of circular. I’d started to collect different sizes before then having an opportunity to purchase interchangeable (game changers!). The only straight needles I use now are DPNs.

    i've always found it really weird that people knit with straight needles like, holding both of them up? where i'm from (idk the geography of it hahah, my part of the netherlands at least) we like, prop the right needle under your arm (just like, basically under your armpit hahah), which takes the weight off of your hands, i guess?? def makes knitting with straight needles easier

    Yup yup I went to the doctor and I did in fact give myself Carpel tunnel... but like I haven’t done any permanent damage. I’m going to go to physical therapy, and I’ve still been crocheting. I just got ergonomic hooks, take more breaks and work at the table instead of the couch.

    I knit in the English style and find that instead of feeling pain or strain on my wrists I feel it in my shoulders and neck. Stretching them, as well as taking breaks is definitely the best thing to do, as well as resting the piece on your lap. The only problem about having your knitting on your lap is if you ever have a complicated project that you constantly need to look at haha

    Hey there! I’m relatively new to knitting. I was taught continental style, but I recently discovered that I do a KTBL (knit through the back loop) by accident, so now I’m relearning to to untwist my gauge, and I got frustrated because I was straining harder now lol. KTBL was way more ergonomic, very efficient and smooth on my wrists, but my now I’m trying to do Fisherman’s Rib so I can recreate this store bought cardigan I’d love to remake in more colors, but it’s not going to work with my twisted stitches…so now I must relearn 😌
    I was trying to watch other knitters, at least their hands, but some looked uncomfortable, but came across your video. You’re very calm. I’m going to check out your other content. Hopefully you’ve gained a new subscriber 😎

    Hi Tiffany, thanks for the exercise tips. Without realizing it I have strained my shoulders and am finding it very difficult to knit now. I have found a few exercises for shoulder pain. The worst part is it took me about a month to realize why I was having this pain. I did not associate it with my knitting. And I was knitting a bulky sweater when I usually knit with fingering weight yarn. I stopped knitting for about a week but still am having issues.

    I've got tendonitis of both thumbs and both elbows, carpal tunnel, joint pain, and all sorts of other garbage. Stretching before you knit can be an absolute game changer, and it's 100% worth it. I also use copper infused compression gloves which I kinda thought was a scam before trying, but I wear them all the time now. And there's no shame in using an elbow strap or other form of "brace" to prevent injury. Be kind to your body or it'll stop being kind to you

    • @kerridinsmore1528
      @kerridinsmore1528 3 роки тому +3

      Gotcha! Awesome that youre doing a sweater. Thats quite a feat! While a little stretching is common for any knitted garments, you can stop a majority of it just by how you store your sweater. Do not hang your sweater on a hanger. You can put it in a drawer or if you live in an older house or a place where moths/carpet beetles are present, preferrably a tub that latches down to keep the critters out. You can just fold it gently or even do a roll gently. Also, you dont have to typically wash your knits as much as regular clothing. Since its a cardigan,youre probably going to wear a tshirt or something under it. Less washing equals more life and less stretch. Finally, hand washing, rather than machine will help it to not stretch as well. Hope this helps!

    • @kerridinsmore1528
      @kerridinsmore1528 3 роки тому

      Okay so I'm not sure how versed you are in it so im just gonna try to give a rundown. Knitting gauge: it's basically how tight or how loose you naturally knit. Everyones gauge is different. It's unique to you. Even going from metal vs wood needles will mess with your gauge. If you're following a pattern, a designer will give gauge so that you can match their knitting. This is not so important in shawls and hats and scarves, etc. But it's very important for things like sweaters and cardigans. Typically, a designer will give you a width and length to strive for within a certain number of stitches. Also typically, it is within a 4inx4in square. For example: a designer might say that they got 24 stitches in a 4x4 square using US5 needles. When making a garment, the length one is not as important as the width one. You can always knit longer or shorter per what you like. So to get this, I usually make my first gauge swatch with the recommended needles (us5). You also want to make your swatch bigger than 4x4 so that you can accurately see your tension changes. So if the goal is 24 stitches, ill usually CO between 35-40. (Note, you also want to typically knit in stockinette unless the designer asks for something else. Also you want to block the piece.) Once the piece is done: say you get 26 stitches per 4in instead of 24. You will want to go up a needle size. If you get 22 instead of 24, youll want to go down a needle size. (Note: if it varys wildly like you get 30 instead of 24 or 18 instead of 24, you can go up a couple of needle sizes. Its kind of a guessing game unfortunately. However, you can reuse the swatch yarn for your project if you need to. Just simply unravel it.) Hope this helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

      @mewmew4264 3 роки тому +1

      @@kerridinsmore1528 this is helpful. Thank you. ☺️ Also, since I'm a beginner and I'm broke too (😅) I couldn't purchase a pattern yet. So I did try to watch other videos on YT about the gauge. My yarn doesn't indicate a gauge swatch so I did it on my own, and yes, you're right, you have to change needles and guess how many stitches to cast on. Now I know that designing your own pattern is quite difficult (maybe for me). But since I changed my needles, the tube top or bandeu top that I made is just right my size, I wish I changed my needles, but it's okay, I learned my lesson. Maybe I'll just lose weight so it's a bit flowy instead of looking like a sushi roll. 😅 Haha. Thank you again!

I'm also rather large (i'm 6'2, rib cage is 36-38 inches), so if i were to knit myself a crop top for instance i dont know if general guidelines would be the same that i've found online :(((

    • @kerridinsmore1528
      @kerridinsmore1528 3 роки тому +1

      Hi! So typically, you can use 16" needles for hats (i usually use a short tip for those so that its more flexible). For shawls, i usually use a 40in cable. For your size for garment knitting, you can probably do a 32in or a 40in in no problem. (Typically garment knitting goes by the biggest part of your bust for sizing.) I usually use a 32 in for mine cause i like my stitches squished together lol. It's personal preference. Knit Picks has really good interchangeable needles and sometimes they go on sale so they arent so expensive. If you need anything else, lemme know. :)

      about washing your knitwear: it really depends on the material you're using - if you use acrylic you can definitely throw it in the washing mashine (if you wanna be safe there often is a woll setting, it's about 30°C) and if you're using natural fibers like kashmir, wash them by hand, I usually use shampoo or detergent, and then lay them in a towel to dry so the knit doesn't stretch out (the drying method really helps retain the size of any knit). hope I could help:)

    • @a.l.a.n.a
      @a.l.a.n.a 3 роки тому +2

      maybe try checking out some patterns to get to know how many balls you'll need. it all depends on method, stitch and desired length. yarnspirations or garnstudio have loads of free patterns available which also indicate how many ball of yarn (theirs, but they do indicate the weight yarn it is) you need. for washing, most of the time the band on your ball of yarn will have washing instructions on it, so be sure to check them!
