I know this is an older video back in 2017 but I love it. I just made my 1950’s hot cocoa. Thank you Stephen for leaving your moms older videos available for us to look back on. ❤😊
I remember the first time my younger sister made cocoa. She used the recipe from the back of the Hershey’s cocoa can. She proudly called us when it was finished. With my first sip, I realized something was wrong. The cocoa was extremely SALTY. Upon questioning, we discovered she had misread the recipe and added a DISH of salt instead of a DASH of salt! We discovered shortly after that she needed glasses. Another fun memory from the 1950’s.
This popped up in my feed, and I am so glad it did! Your mom was such a treasure, and her recipes so lovely; I go back to them often. Oh, I wish you had a cookbook!!
Great to see you back in the kitchen Miss Phyllis. Hope Steely and Sunny are still getting along. Tell Steely he needs to make another video to update us on how things are going.
In 1944 my mother used to bring home friends from Choir Practice Thursday nights, and made this, exactly this way minus the marshmallows. It was also minus the sugar. The sugar bowl was brought to the table for everyone to stir in the amount they wanted. Sugar was rationed, of course, during the War.
Sweet lady Phyllis, I love to listen your stories and your explanations. You’re really great❣️ My English knowledges are a bit limited and it’s incomplete, but every time I’m listening your stories, I’m learning new words and phrases. It’s such a joy for me, believe me😍. Sometimes I have to ask my online dictionary to understand words, but in the meantime I’m used to your vocabulary. Sweet Phyllis, thank you for your being! I love you❣️🌹
Miss Phyllis, I learned how to make hot cocoa just like this in the 1970s and 80s when I was young. Used to come home from my paper route on freezing cold days and fix it up on the stove. So much better than instant.
I made this today as a treat and omg it's sooo good!!!!💗 I cut the sugar down just cuz I prefer less sugar, but it's smooth, creamy rich and yummy!! So much better than packets and sooo easy!!!💗💐👍🏻
I miss her! She was always such a comfort to me. I’d watch her after work. My stress level would go way down and it was like spending time with a grandmother I didn’t have ❤
Phyllis, You probably know this already, If Sunny doesn't come when called try the universal puppy call most if not all breeders use. With an uplifted happy voice call out "Here Puppppiessss, Here pup, pup, oup, puppppiessss". Most likely Sunny's breeder used it, we all do. Btw... I've made many of your recipes to the delight of my 85y/o mother. She said to tell you, some of your recipes are older than you think. She remembers them in the 30's &40's. My are they GOOD! Thank you so much!
I'm going to try that puppy call. Sunny's breeder used what sounded like a clicker. Whatever it was all the puppies came running, it sounded like a clicker to me. I tried snapping my finders a couple of times and Sunny came running when I did the snapping I guess it sounded like a clicker. I prefer being able to call him.
We live a hop skip and jump from the Hershey Factory and Park...the scent of Chocolate is constantly thru the air here...the street lights are Hershey silver wrapped kisses.. Street size of course...this is how we had hot cocoa all our lives..😍☺👍
Phyllis Stokes Yes..very nice..however it's dairy farm area ..Because of the fresh milk for the milk chocolate..and mixed with the cow scent and chocolate is well...hmmmm a acquired smell to say the least..lol!! . But the streets of Hershey Ave.smells absolutely wonderful..your mouth waters..😃
My grandma used to make it like this but she would add cinnamon sticks in it when she added the milk and let them sit for a little bit...it gave it a good taste=)
Hi Mrs. Stokes 😘Love Love Love your stories 😘. I Haven’t enjoyed a hot cocoa in a long time because I can’t have whole milk so I watched your video and made this hot cocoa with almond milk and only half of the recipe for one cup and I’m so happy I can enjoy hot cocoa again and with real cocoa not the packet stuff. 😊 Thank you.
Oh, Phyllis you took me right back to my childhood. By the time of Junior high, we were taking thermoses of hot cocoa to the football games. Everybody loved my mother's recipe cause it was just what you made.
My mom made this for us in the 60's and I always looked forward to it. Sunny is adorable. My little troublemaker (Seymour) likes to drag my son's socks and my bras out of the laundry hamper. I thought he might outgrow his mischievous antics but he's nearly 3 and it hasn't happened yet. I guess I'll just love him as he is. Haha! Merry Xmas to you all!
Dear Phyllis I was brought up by my mom I was mom and dad but I was born in 1958 but my mom still made hot cocoa with Hershey's cocoa powder so this recipe is dear to my heart also you know I love watching your videos but I wanted to let you know that you are tea kettle with the flowers on at the Lee Drummond tea kettle was the first thing on my list this Christmas because I love your so much so I want I want you guys to have a very merry Christmas see you in the new year
That looks lovely, will have to try it,although UK don't sell your lovely coco powder. Have a love Christmas and a peaceful new year to you and Mr Buckley
This brings back a memory of 1956 when a few of us girls went skating on a playground which the city made available for the kids to ice skate. After we were there awhile I saw my dad with a thermos filled with hot cocoa to warm us up. It IS cold up here in the Northeast now. What a great memory. Thank you.
I am at least eight years older than you Phyllis and my mother made hot cocoa all the time but it was during and after World War II. Sugar was rationed then so we would never be able to use that much. The recipe that I remember basically was the same as yours but the sugar was equal to the Coco. I guess I’ve always grown up with a dislike of extra sweet things in everything. I am guessing now that this was because it was not my childhood experience to have very much sugar. I still make Coco but here in Canada the Coco is called Fry’s end it was the trade name then too. Glad to see you’re back I love your recipes and listening to you talk.
Hi Ms Phyllis! I was standing in line at the grocery store waiting to check out when the notification of your UA-cam video being uploaded arrived on my phone. I took one quick look at the title and knew I needed some marshmallows to make this wonderfully delicious hot cocoa. I didn't hesitate a second to leave the checkout line to go get the marshmallows! We enjoyed the hot cocoa that same evening after supper and tonight as well. We have a cold front coming thru next week so am making another run to the store for more milk and marshmallows! I have a hunch folks at my house will be asking for this hot cocoa again. Thanks for sharing the recipe and for the video. Looks like Mr Bucky enjoyed the hot cocoa as much as we did. Good to see Sunny has recovered from his trip to the vet for his shots. Looks like he's back up to full speed! Sending y'all best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!!
I was the cocoa maker at our house. We used Fry's brand cocoa and it was made just the same way you made it. It never ceases to amaze me that things were so much the same so far away. I grew up in British Columbia Canada. I have a funny story about cocoa. A few years ago my brother was on a chocolate milk kick. He was using Nestlie's Quick. One day he said he missed the hot cocoa I made when we were kids and would I buy cocoa next time I was shopping. I told him he could just add hot milk to Nestlie's Quick but he insisted it wasn't the same and it had to be the one I used to make when we were kids. So I bought a big carton of cocoa. A few weeks later he told me that wasn't what he wanted. He didn't realize it had to be made from scratch. He wanted something he could just add to hot milk, so I showed him the recipe for chocolate syrup, but he didn't want to do that as that was too complicated. I told him if he wanted it the way I made it when we were kids he would have to make it from scratch each time or make a jar of chocolate syrup because that's how I made it. I ended up repossessing the can of cocoa and buying him the store bought chocolate syrup. He refused to believe it was made from scratch when we were growing up.
My grandma made this for me when I was a little girl. She would make toast with butter and we would dunk it. It was amazing. I love hot chocolate today but it isn't the same as grandma's cocoa. Thank you for bringing up the wonderful memories. 🙂
THANK YOU!! Phyllis 4 Sharing this hot cocoa/chocolate recipe. My mom, and .. I have made fudge from this Hersheys cocoa. Hmmm😁🤗 I have 2 say.. I took a liking 2 hot chocolate lately..Even with miniature marshmallows!! I turned 52 last month😊 My children always liked hot chocolate.. When they were Young. . UR NEVER 2 old 2 like hot chocolate.
That’s the way my Mom made it too. I grew up in Virginia and we had plenty of cold days playing in the snow and she would make this to warm us up. This brings back such nice memories. Thanks, Phyllis! Please say “hi” to Mr Bucky. Much ❤️
Hi Miss Phyllis! My mother's answer to illness was Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, soda crackers, and 7Up! If my dad was home, he made me potato soup with lots of onions. Little diced potatoes just tender, but still holding their shape, butter, milk and salt. I loved both soups. I made the scratch chicken rice with onions garlic and basil for my 'feel better' soup, for my kids. I was born in '55.
I have not been able to watch you in awhile.....this video makes me happy. I am only 45, but these earlier time recipes are comforting. makes me think of good family times. thank you for sharing. I hope a lot of the old ways would never go away.
I can remember on snow days, my mom calling us in from sledding and making hot cocoa for us. I don't know how she made it, but it looked just like that. I always liked a spoonful of vanilla ice cream in mine! Sunny looks like he's settling in just fine and Steely has his spot back for the moment anyway, LOL.
So in Vermont you've got snow this evening, you can bet we in the South are very envious as we almost never get snow and certainly not around Christmas time. Lucky you.
We've had snow since late October, on and off. And will probably see the last of the snow in late March to early April. Very cold today, December 21st, at 12 degrees for the high and we have about 7 inches of snow on the ground. I hope that you and Mr. Bucky and family have a very happy and blessed Christmas!
My Pappa made a berry pie that I have never been able to duplicate. He would approve of your pie crust and your poodles. You made me happy to remind me of him. Bet he is cooking big meals for his neighbors in Heaven. Today is his birthday. I missed him and your video made me feel like I was hanging out with him. Keep doing your thing. It makes an impact.
Aaaww, I really love your videos and your little family there! I get such a warm, homey vibe with each one of your videos! I really appreciate you! P.S. Homemade hot cocoa,Yum!!!😋
This looks tasty 😋. It is so cold here in Oklahoma now. Going to make some of this today. Thanks Phyllis. Wishing you and Mr. Bucky a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 🎅🍵🎄🎁🎉🎆
Oooooweee!!! GOOD memories Miss Phyllis❣️My granny used to make this same hot cocoa for us four kids when we came in from playing in the snow :) Thanks for the love & give your babies Steely & Sunny a pat from us ⛄️🎄❣️
This brings back some very fond memories of things back in the 50s. I haven't made this in decades, but thanks to Miss Phyllis, that's going to change today! My wife is going to love this. Thanks Phyllis!
I miss you, Ms. Phyllis! If I had a mom/Grandma like you, I'd love to know all about the good old days as many older people have no interest in the past. The days we live in now are the worst! They've forgotten the past (young people have never even learned ) and are destroying our future...beautiful story of your sister's Marshmallows/hot chocolate memory:) I never use the junk hot chocolate they have on the shelves today!
Thank you Ms.Phyllis! Excellent! This is the ONLY way I make cocoa..I NEVER buy that sugary mess they sell in the stores! And besides, you can control the amount of sweetness you or your guests like.... Your cups of cocoa looks so inviting and delicious!☕ And a splash of pure vanilla , extra chocolate chips, marshmallows and or whipped cream pushes it over the top! I sometimes add a little peppermint extract to my pot..now, the only thing missing is the cracklin' fireplace! 🤗
My husband, who wasn't born till the 70s makes cocoa this way. It's so delicious that it broke me from ever wanting to drink the instant kind any more. Thanks for sharing.
I have never seen hot cocoa made like this before and I got so excited when I saw the vanilla extract! Thank you so much for posting this Ms Phyllis 👍💜
Wow! This hot cocoa recipe video just brought me back to when I was a kid......no instant coca packets back then for me either....I may just have to make this next week...in the 50's here now, but dropping to the 30's next week.....I always floated marshmallows in my cocoa to! Phyllis, your one awesome lady! You always make me smile, no matter what kind of day I had!
Memories of my childhood came flooding back. My mother made a large glass pitcher of hot coco for us in the am. Homemade bread toasted, hot cereal. Oh for one day back there.
Oh my goodness 😜😜😜I called my 19 year old son down as soon as I watched this and said come on son gonna show you how to make homemade hot cocoa!!! Oh boy was it good!!! Thank you Ms. Phyllis ❤️❤️
Hi Phyllis , glad to see you back doing recipes. Hot cocoa takes me back to my childhood , I think you and I are about the same age and it was a treat when my mother would make it for us .
Thanks lovely couple for sharing your lives with us this year...your recipes, your funny little dogs...your can do attitude...all inspire and inform ...you have made a very hard year easier..at night..I settle in with my iPad and Miz Phyllis and Mr Bucky and their boys...and all is good...😊. Merry Christmas!!! ❤️
My mom used this recipe...think it was on the canister. Also, my grandmother always had Ovaltine in her pantry. The original Ovaltine had that roasted barley flavor. The modern version is different, but still enjoyable.
Ms Phyllis , your videos bring be back when I was growing up in the 50's , a lot of your recipes are just like mom['s..what memories for me , mom also used to make hot cocoa for us kids , her's was called Fry's cocoa , and it was a snack before bed , and us kids liked to dunk our toast in it,,,,sooo good , thank you for all your videos....and great memories...
I love this! As someone else already said, I love the stories you tell while you're cooking. These videos remind me of my grandmother... She used to get her recipe box out and show me recipes and it seemed like she had a story for each one. She was from West Virginia, and she loved making fudge and I loved learning how to make it from her.
I watched another video today that talked about the good ole days! This brought back so many memories!! Thank you for sharing and a very Merry Christmas!!
I watched this and then the next videos that came up were brownies then fudge. That Fudge video blew me away. I left you a comment on there because it brought back memories of my grandmother making candy. She was a pro at it and had actually worked making candy as a young girl, I loved her so. Thank you so much.
memory is a wonderful thing ... like how you will always think of your sister and her "extra three" all your life whenever you see hot cocoa and marshmallows
YUMMY!!! I DID NOT FOLLOW ANY RECIPE LAST WEEK AND MADE MYSELF SOME HOT COCOA. IT WAS GOOD UNTIL I GOT TO THE BOTTOM OF MY CUP AND THEN ; YUCK!!! I had unsweetened Hershey's Cocoa Powder with no SUGAR!!!! I didn't know that I first cook the cocoa and sugar with some water first. I also used way too much cocoa. Thank You for showing Us how the 50's real stuff was made. I think that I may make Myself Some for breakfast this morning. It is cold up North Here in South Dakota. I love Your 50's recipes! I loved a lot about the 50's from old movies and everything else. I was not born until 1965 so I remember Hippies, Hard and Soft 70's Rock. Then In My High School years of The early 80's. I just love a lot about The 50's. Thank You for sharing Your Wonderful recipes with Us and Your Fur-Babies also. 😊👍🏼❄️🍮YUMMY!!!!
My Nana, in St. Johns, Newfoundland, would send us a box every Christmas. There were terrific airy peppermint candies and an orange can of Fry's Cocoa. Special memory.
Yes!! This is the cocoa I grew up on as well. I have always called it cocoa .. never hot chocolate. When Swiss Miss came out we thought that was just the coolest .. we could make our own! But, nothing beats the homemade richness of Hershey's cocoa ♥ I would make it for us every Christmas morning for our big family breakfast. I made a dutch oven full! LOL .. it was quite an undertaking. Hello to Mr. Bucky, Steely and sweet Sunny! and Thanks for another wonderful walk down memory lane Miss Phyllis! ♥♥
I made homemade marshmallows last week after that huge snowstorm we had in western NC....they are so yummy....much better than store bought and they were so easy to make...especially if you have a kitchen aide mixer....Laurie
Mmmmmmm.. I put a bit of flavored coffee creamer in my cup before pouring in the cocoa. Mr. Bucky loved his cocoa! Great and easy recipe Miss Phyllis, I might not even need to write this one down. Thanks for the video! ❤from Kansas City🌻
For the life of me, why would anyone dislike this video? I loved it. Reminded me of my Mom making this for my sister and me. Today would have been her birthday. 👍
Even after the mini marshmallows came out, my mom-in-law used to use the larger ones for jello molds and cocoa because she said they stayed much softer...she'd cut them up with kitchen shears. The pups are adorable! Thanks for sharing.
Phyllis, you rescued me once again! This Hot Cocoa looks and tastes simply delish! In my quest to have more wonderful home-cooked meals again ( now that the kids are grown ) and in prep mode for Grand-Mothering one day; have found you to be a reliable and magnificent resource!
You guys are adorable..each time I see your videos, it's like traveling back in time to a place where life was so simple and stress free!!..before things became so complicated!!...and you could still leave the front doors unlocked!!!
I know this is an older video back in 2017 but I love it. I just made my 1950’s hot cocoa. Thank you Stephen for leaving your moms older videos available for us to look back on. ❤😊
You are so welcome!
If only I could have a mug full with her. When Phyllis comes up in my videos, I see it as a visit from a sweet friend. RIP .

What a great idea using almond milk, I'm going to use almond milk next time.
Thank you for this delicious recipe. I live in New England and this will be made often to warm me up after clearing all that snow.

Sometimes your cooking videos put me to sleep. Not because they're boring. They're relaxing to watch sometimes. I dig that. Keep the videos coming! 👍
I remember this on the cold winter nights growing up in West Virginia as a young girl. Happy to see sonny is fitting in.
I understand, I drag towels out too. It's super fun.
What fun watching you make cocoa. I still do that when I remember. Thanks Phyllis for a delightful reminder of the past.

This looks tasty 😋. It is so cold here in Oklahoma now. Going to make some of this today. Thanks Phyllis. Wishing you and Mr. Bucky a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 🎅🍵🎄🎁🎉🎆
This is the sweetest story of hot cocoa! I really need to make some now.
Oooooweee!!! GOOD memories Miss Phyllis❣️My granny used to make this same hot cocoa for us four kids when we came in from playing in the snow :) Thanks for the love & give your babies Steely & Sunny a pat from us ⛄️🎄❣️
So grateful for every one of your videos. Thank you so much!
This brings back some very fond memories of things back in the 50s. I haven't made this in decades, but thanks to Miss Phyllis, that's going to change today! My wife is going to love this. Thanks Phyllis!
Sometimes, the simplest things are the best! Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas!
Yes!!! I'm going to make this now, we just got 7" of snow. Back when mom made this it felt like a warm hug😊 thank you Phyllis
Brings me back to my childhood, my mother made this cocoa all the time!
That brings back memories my Mom used to make that when my brother and I were small and we loved it
My husband, who wasn't born till the 70s makes cocoa this way.
Oh yes, Phyllis, I remember making this all the time growing up (or rather mom made it, especially on snow days). No instant stuff for us!
I remember my Mama making this for me in the 1950's. It was so good!
You're truly making this 20 degree SNOW at least bearable Phyllis!! :) Merry Christmas to y'all m'friend!! Another geeeer8 video!! Thank you!!
Looks so delicious! Sunny is so cute! ❤️
My mom used this recipe...think it was on the canister. Also, my grandmother always had Ovaltine in her pantry. The original Ovaltine had that roasted barley flavor. The modern version is different, but still enjoyable.
Oh thank you for the wonderful memories
Miss Mr. Bucky's sweet personality, too...
I watched this and then the next videos that came up were brownies then fudge. That Fudge video blew me away. I left you a comment on there because it brought back memories of my grandmother making candy. She was a pro at it and had actually worked making candy as a young girl, I loved her so. Thank you so much.
Awesome recipe! Nothing better than hot cocoa in December! Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!!
memory is a wonderful thing ... like how you will always think of your sister and her "extra three" all your life whenever you see hot cocoa and marshmallows
That looks pretty much how we made it in the fifties as well. So good!
Looks good! My coworker and I LOVE your videos!
LOVE hot cocoa! Thank you for sharing! I will be making this!
I still call it cocoa, so comforting,
My Nana, in St. Johns, Newfoundland, would send us a box every Christmas. There were terrific airy peppermint candies and an orange can of Fry's Cocoa. Special memory.
Thank you Ms. Phyllis. Brings back memories. :)
Just found your channel a couple of days ago, just love them, you are beautiful inside and out, and your husband .From Mississippi.
I make mine the same way, but instead of vanilla extract I add coconut extract. It's delicious!
This was the same way my grandma and my momma always made it for us and the way I make it still for my kiddos! So good ! Thanks for sharing this !
Just like my grandmother made for me! Yum. We still make it this way. Merry Christmas to you, Mr. Bucky and those fur babies.
I made homemade marshmallows last week after that huge snowstorm we had in western NC....they are so yummy....much better than store bought and they were so easy to make...especially if you have a kitchen aide mixer....Laurie
I'm sure the home made marshmallows are much better than those purchased in the grocery store.
Those purchased today also have a preservative in them.
Good day to reminisce.
Thank you my dear. A pleasure as always
I remember making this recipe and also how good it tastes. Thanks for sharing.
Made it tonight. Delish, very rich and old fashioned chocolate flavor. Thanks
You guys are adorable..each time I see your videos, it's like traveling back in time to a place where life was so simple and stress free!!..before things became so complicated!!...and you could still leave the front doors unlocked!!!
