- In this episode we join Danel Resurreccion,- an up and coming pro in the ACL as he walks us through bag selection and the fundamentals of his game. He is currently ranked 17th in California, and 36th in doubles in the nation. He is also a founder of Bangarang, a cornhole gear and apparel company based in San Diego. Danel represents the Western Division of the ACL and is quickly earning the respect of the cornhole world with his consistent top 10 finishes through out his first two years on the pro tour.

We were playing the game during a family/friends BBQ and I did a quick online search just to establish the distance. I was amazed when the results showed us that there are leagues, and even professions, for this common backyard game. Regarding the seriousness level, billiards surprises many people, but cornhole certainly shocks the vast majority.
Love me some good bags. You always have back seat drivers and sore looser partners. Goal 1 is to chillax and have fun. Goal 2 is to stay positive and aim for your own improvement. I step into my shot. Guess what? I’m inconsistent. Just like he said. I’m going to keep that front foot still and eliminate my windup. Can’t wait to sharpen my style and game. My have fun and cheer for good sportsmanship will keep me on growth mindset.
This is why I watch a lot of videos by the Pros. Nobody has ever talked about that shoulder circle motion. That was a great potential tip. I will be trying that next time I throw. My biggest issue is being consistent with my follow through and that could fix my problem, also shorten up my landings.

I have been a player or coach at the highest levels of baseball/Softball for most of my adult life (58 years). I have begun a serious effort and am documenting my journey as I learn and improve. My brother....I want to tell you are a terrific teacher and communicator in this forum. I do not generally comment and I have watched over 300 cornhole instruction video now in the last 12 days. I have seen many of the best known pros teach the same thing far less effectively. You are Teaching them to think to think! Learning how to feel/ mindset/ frame if mind is a prerequisite to sucsess! You are a rare commodity! I teach mental Prepetation/Psycho cybernetics/ framing/visualization/Imagery etc.. You are appreciated by this future cornhole champion.. I’ve been throwing just underhand for years. I’m a good backyard player but the more I watch the pros I feel I need to switch to your way of throwing bags. My first practice session today didn’t go well. Almost every throw was left or right. Then I watched this video and it sounds like my release point is too high. Thanks for the tips.
Same here and this is the first video I’ve found talking about a high release point! They say to just work on a flat bag first then you can dial in your aim later..

I LOVE your teaching in the lesson. I hope you will do more here or on your site. For a relative beginner, throwing a flat bag is frustrating to try and achieve. Do you recommend standing closer to the board and practicing or practicing from the normal distance. (I feel standing closer trains my arc to be wrong. ) What to you suggest as the best way to train to throw the perfect flat bag?
In my opinion, throwing and practicing at normal distance (27 feet apart from the front of the boards) is the best way. So, you develop muscle memory in regards to distance. You don’t wanna have to adjust the velocity of your throw from a short distance to the normal distance down the line. It’s like, you want to get better at shooting 3 pointers, you practice shooting behind the 3 point line. First step is to learn how to throw the bag with a spin first. Find your grip. Find your release point that feels comfortable relative to your arm swing. Snap your wrist, rotate your hand and open up your palm as you release the bag. Keep doing this over and over again until you see the bag flight. Then make incremental adjustments of your release and grip until you get to a flatter bag. And when you think your bag is getting flatter, get it more flat. Repetition is key.

Great video, New to the cornhole community, I throw the way you mention early in video, "Swinging Arm" Tried this technique but I found myself pulling my Elbow straining that tension. How do I go about correcting that???
Thanks For the feedback. By not seeing how you apply the suggested technique, it’s hard to mentally picture it in my head when you mention pulling my elbow straining that tension. To me I picture how my shoulders rotate clockwise for the wind up and when I release the bag, it releases it like a catapult and all I do is follow through with that motion and let the natural fluid motion carry the velocity through my elbow. So naturally it locks the elbow until you release the bag, arm straight and palms open to guide it to the direction you’re aiming. But you have to follow through all the way, don’t stop the swing motion.

Great video. Do you consciously try to open up and flatten your hand at the end of your throw? If so, at what point do you rotate your arm/hand open? Thx
Yes open palm so the bag releases with “no snag”. I try to consciously rotate my wrist just a little above the waste line (apex of the release) then the rest is a follow through. I try to vision a parabola with my full release motion and draw it in my head. Then all you have to do is follow that path with your hand and you can figure out your own release point. Snap the wrist a half second before you release and open up your palm half a second after you release and follow that parabolic motion across your body. You can tweak and fine tune this technique depending on your stance and grip.

@@AIRMAILS any tips to help avoid hitting your leg on the backswing? I throw throwing foot forward. Tried both ways and still hit my back pants pocket or the outside of my thigh on the forward swing. This happens when the bag label is facing up and doesn’t happen as much when the bag is vertical (label facing left)

Hey brother. Any tips for a bag that keeps nosediving (front loaded)? Unfortunately this promotes the bag kicking
It could be: 1. Your release point is too late. Meaning the bag is thrown up higher than it should be. 2. Your release trajectory is vertical. Pay attention to your release, does it look like your arm is just going up in a vertical motion? 3. Maybe adjust your grip and try to open up your palm at the release point. 4. Snap your wrist more and FOLLOW through. Like your shooting a free throw shot, finish your throw motion all the way through instead of stopping right when you release the bag.
@@AIRMAILS my trajectory is usually pretty low, lol too low. I have a bend in the elbow in the backswing and after I release the bag at times. I usually push the bag right if I think about opening my palm. When you say snap your wrist, do you mean like frisbee motion at the very end?
@@michaelminnie210 yes and your follow through should be across your body. Figure out the flight of your bag at time of release and adjust accordingly. Once you find that “spot” do it over and over and over until it gets comfortable. Remember, you have to be uncomfortable first before you can get comfortable when you’re trying a new throw.
I score 6 to 10 points every turn with a nose down spinner throw but I'm really been working hard and throwing a flatter bag but it always seems to be a little nose down what is the best way to get the nose of the bag more flat
Work on releasing the bag a little bit earlier. Maybe half a second earlier and see if that makes a difference

So far the best way we have found to visualize the motion is turning a doorknob.
