I finally got most of my garden planted yesterday gonna do okra in a few weeks my dad who is 80 said I need to wait till it's hotter but I'm excited about the peaches and cream corn I planted. God bless yall
I'll be honest, I couldn't find the old goat tonight. I was looking hard at the flowers behind Momma Hoss, and even laying on top of the box beside the eggs behind Momma, but even though I looked at the comments and everyone was saying the three carrots behind Greg, I couldn't see him. Finally, I found him. The reflection of me glared off my computer screen at me and I saw the Old Goat looking for an Old Goat. LOL
I grow celery every year in northern Michigan , I start the seeds under lights in the winter around January , love your videos , I’ve grown beautiful corn thanks to your videos, thank you
Hey y’all grew celery over the winter and still continue to use it, I live in Houston and like Sheila bought six pack of plants from Lowe’s and grew it, Old goat in the bunch of carrots Behind Greg.
Thanks for the corn info! I've never grown it, but I've sure pulled it, shucked and silked it, cut the kernels off, and helped put it up in exchange for some of the corn. That can be a great way for those of us who are on small lots to get homegrown corn. Processing it is a ton of work, and those who are willing to lend a hand don't leave with empty hands. Old Goat is a sneaky one this week! I think he's hiding behind the carrots next to Greg's shoulder.
Hey y'all! Great show tonight. I love corn and can't wait to plant mine in a week or so. I'm in Zone 7 in a small town in Northeast Alabama called Trenton and our last frost date is April 15th so just wanna make sure it'll be alright. I'm gonna plant Peaches and Cream which I got from you guys along with my tomato and pepper plants as well. I got my seed taters and brassica plants transplanted into the garden today which I also got from y'all. Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage! Love you guys and all the tools and everything is amazing! The old goat was hard to find but I believe I see him peeking out behind the 3 carrots on bottom shelf behind Greg. Thanks again for what you do!
I love you corny folks. Thanks for the encouragement, great tips, and successful material and products so we, too, can bring out the little farmer in us. Old 🐐 is nicely tucked behind the bundle of carrots over Craig's right shoulder. Make it a great day!
Hoss Tools has so many great corn varieties, i double crop each year and have triple cropped it, highly recommend the longest maturing varieties grown in the spring and a medium maturing varieties for a second crop or plant second and third crops with short maturity dates in zone 8B.
Whew! Been trying to comment since the beginning of the show! We are cooking a roast with the first of our own onions and celery tonight. Can't wait. I think tomorrow we will be harvesting most of our onions and the rest of the celery. We are cutting asparagus everyday while also letting some of it stay. Last of the cabbage and carrots are growing. We are here in Houston TX. Going to get hot quick. Last broccoli should be harvested soon. We have sweet corn coming up, blue popcorn coming up. Squash, peppers and tomatoes are slow. Black eyed peas are great. Potatoes, red and gold are great. Even have some different melons, cucumbers coming up. Hey! Did you guys replace the old goat with chicken or something? Haha! Ok, still watching and will chime in again.
Will be about 30-45 days before we can plant corn. Planning on planting sweet corn and field corn and blue corn. Of course the plantings will be staggered to prevent the possibility of cross pollination. Now talk about trying to make a wild guess. Thinking the Old Goat did get mites from the rabbit last week. Now he is hiding out right of the rabbit in the fake fruit bowl. Thank You for another enjoyable half hour!
I get tickled pink every time I hear Sheila praise the freeze dryer, I waited years to hear those words. I'm so happy for you guys finally getting one. I also want to say about celery, I've grown in northwest Florida that I got from Regine and her husband Kent and their four children, have a farm in central Florida, they have Asian Garden 2 Table website and YT channel, she also sells Asian vegetable seeds on her website that are rarely found at standard seed companies, she currently has 6 different varieties of celery that she has grown at her farm before.
Trying my hand at growing celery by seed this season, have about 6 plants that should go in the ground soon. I will plant corn in May and like to freeze it in those bags you had for your creamed corn, don't care for home canned corn for some reason.
Man I'm glad to see y'all eating on set again! 😊I was getting worried about you! Greg or Sheila touched on it briefly, but folks, corn is one thing that cross pollination affects CURRENT generation. Yellow and white planted same time, same area, you're going to get some bicolor. Guarantee it! Great show, as always, thanks for what y'all do!
Hi Sheila & Greg, Thanks for another great show! I grow 12 Celery Utah every year and dry the leaves to use for celery salt. I just blend it together with sea salt and bottle it. We slice and freeze what we can't eat fresh to throw in soups during winter. I dehydrated some as well and it worked. Home grown celery is pungent so a little goes a LOOOooooong way. I'm going to try corn this year but don't have a pressure canner, so I'll have to freeze it.
We don't grow our own corn...here in Kansas you can't spit without hitting a stand of the sweetest corn any summer day. We buy our year's corn from a local farmer and make a big project of getting it all processed. Is the goat behind Greg, or is he playing hooky today?
Boy the old goat is hiding good! But, he is peeking out behind Greg on the first shelf! Live in zone 7 and getting ready to plant my corn! I always plant about 20 rows, 75 foot long...yep it's a lot, but big family and love taking a pickup truck load to church and giving it away!
Last year I planted “silver queen” and “northern extra sweet” in the same plot. Their pollination timing was far enough apart that they didn’t cross pollinate. They both did very well. Wondering if anyone else has tried northern extra sweet? It’s a very sweet yellow corn (sh2) and had 8”-9” ears. Only about 5’-6’ stalks. I’m planning to grow the whole plot (35’x45’) this year. Definitely would recommend anyone to try it out. Seems to germinate quickly in cooler soil temperatures. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with the gardening community!❤
I'm in Southern CA and grow year round. I've been picking celery all winter for soup, stir frys etc. I'm currently growing the Utah variety I believe. We've had some light frost and it doesn't seem to bother it. Our coldest temp was around 28/29 degrees. I've been trying to get the pink going but seems to be a little more difficult. My first year it went to seed fairly fast. I also have red celery started and have never tried this, so very curious to see how it goes. The flavor of home grown is so much stronger, I love it!!!
I’ve been growing Temptress for a few years now absolutely love the variety! We like it super sweet in our parts. I will say agree with the chart. You can not skip a beat with it. It don’t take much to upset it and you’ll pay the price.
Finally found it after adjusting my settings, so when I zoom in, it doesn't get fuzzy. Old Goat is behind the 3 carrots. I could barely see it's horns. They are thicker than the carrot tops.
I'm trying celeriac this year. So far, so good, though I don't expect it to do well during the summer. For anyone not in the know, celeriac is celery, but it's grown for the swollen base of the plant, which is more storable than leaf celery. The leaves are also edible, though not as high quality as actual leaf celery. I'll likely start some more indoors in August for planting out in September. I'm pretty sure it gets too cold here for it to survive through the winter, but if it lasts into mid to late December I may get a crop.
Sanford, FL, fhe City I moved from in 2021, is known as Celery City. Back in the 1800's, celery was a primary crop there. As for corn, I'm fixin' to plant some next week.
I really like the Incredible variety. My third year growing the Incredible. (Grown Bodacious in the past). I did start it in the house this year and already have it in the ground. I have grown corn in a raised bed with great success. I tried in ground last year and had moderate success. Probably needed to hill it a little more than I did. I rewatched several of your corn videos and followed your fertilization schedule. I harvested 32 ears of corn last year. Looking for another great harvest this year.
Hey there! Catching the replay. I don’t grow corn, but if I did you had some great tips. I have tried to grow some celery here in 7a, with some success. I think I will try to over-winter it like my carrots next Fall/Winter. My carrots would have done better this year if we had not had the Artic Blast around Christmas, but I did get some. I think the Old Goat is on the bottom shelf behind Mr. Greg hiding behind either the carrots or the flowers and eggs arrangement. It’s hard to tell. Hope y’all have a great week!
Old goat behind Greg on bottom shelf with the carrots.wife cut off bottom of celery stalks and planted them.growing like crazy.we do not have land big enough for corn 🌽 lucky our friend grows it commercial ly
I sowed celery a few weeks ago.without much success..... thanks for tip about planting in the fall here in the south. Will try that come fall. I do have a block of your sweet corn growing and looking good so far. Fingers crossed. 🙂 I looked hard and long for the old goat..finally see just a bit of him sticking out from the bunch of three carrots on the bottom shelf. Good job hiding him!!
Sanford here in Central Florida has been nicknamed Celery City for over a hundred years because of celery crops replacing the devastated citrus industry in the late 1800’s. I wish I liked celery!
The old goat was a tough one this week! I can see the top of him behind the middle carrot on the bottom shelf behind Greg. Wow. He was really behind there this week, lol! Great job;)
I wanted to plant corn this year but I ran out of garden space. I really want to try the Jimmy Red corn one of these days so I can make some grits and cornbread like Sheila did on an earlier video. As for the Old Goat, I think I can barely see his horns sticking up behind the carrots behind Greg.
Thank y’all for all the info on the sweet corn, I think I saw the old goat behind Miss Sheila I think the third shelf but anyway I really enjoy watching take care God Bless
I'm in zone 5 B northern Missouri Unionville when should I plant corn says last frost is April 23rd great video as always and what does the old goat look like (Tom Brady ) lol
I grow Tall Utah or Utah Tall, whichever it is, in southern Illinois on the border of zone 6 a and b. I start it from seed in January and put it out in my raised beds right around the last frost Usually around the end of March to mid April. Last year I let it go until fall and it survived near 100 degree temps with no shade just loads and loads of water.
Hey y’all! Yes grow Celery in the south! I’m in central Florida and I start those babies from seed in late summer. They go into garden by October. Mine are lovely and dark green now! They like sone afternoon shade! Yummy
I grew pink last year and it went to seed pretty quickly. Trying again this year. My green however is still going strong. I'm also trying red this year.
I planted Ambrosia. Plan on planting a Jimmy Red later in the year. I think the old goat is hiding behind the carrots next to Hoss.... I think, lol !!!
My field is surrounded by commercial fieldcorn grower. Should I even try to grow sweet corn? Should I shake pollinate the silks to reduce cross pollination from the field corn?
“Had” a squirrel problem and I had to sow my corn 5 times. I use catch and relocate rodents for years. With these food prices, I’m not putting up with rodents anymore.
Dang, the "old goat" is practicing his best steal mode this week. Took a while to find him. You can see the tips of his ears and part of the base he stands on and one of his shoes behind the 3 "fat" carrots on the bottom shelf behind Greg. If I'm wrong as just seeing things, then the "old goat" has beat me this week. We are growing a total of 3 types of corn in rotation this year in our small family garden (weather permitting). Primus (81 days - SYN), Sweetness (68 days - SYN), and Ambrosia (75 days - SE). Will be direct seeded on drip tape in 20' x 3' raised beds (that's what I've got to work with). We have issues with squirrels and birds picking the seedlings as they first emerge to get the kernel. I cover with lightweight row cover until they get up and established. I do the same with beans for the same reason. I used to loose at least half of the seeds planted to the critters until I started using row covering to protect the seeds. Row cover also helps boost the soil temp for those heat picky synergistic seeds!!! Spinosad is a must to cut down on corn ear worms (especially in hotter months of summer into fall). Since I'm in small beds, it's thick and close planted. Probably not the preferred way, but you sometimes have to work with what you have. Some corn is better than none!!!! Thanks again for another great show!!!
Love all your advice on growing sweet corn. only grew the it last 2 yrs. I believe whoever hides the Old Goat, out did themselves tonight. I really believe he's hiding behind the 3 fake carrots on the 1st. shelf behind Greg's right shoulder.
Old goat is behind the orange carrots, bottom row on Greg's side. love corn but so do black birds and chipmunks they will pull or dig seedlings out of the ground.
Goeh I find corn the easiest thing to grow that I plant and always get good yield and I grow it all in protien tubs 36 of them in a block from feed store. have drip on them on a timer set to 1 time day then 2 then 3 as it gets hotter and bigger and I feed it most every 3rd time I water it and thats often I also have 4 bug zappers one on each corner and that gets a lot of the worm moths and I use Both BT and spinosad I alternate both. also its in potting soil mixed about 30% cow chit and other things too. and calcium nitrate as gets taller. Usaly do incredible or peaches and cream this year I bought differant one from you Temptress
I think the old goat is behind Greg hiding in the carrots , tough find this week. Growing hickory king corn and a smaller patch of Indian corn. Thanks y’all. 🌽🌽🌽
Any way to grow a substantial amount of corn in containers. Enough to put some up. Not just eating. We don’t eat as much as you but live corn in soups etc. corn about $1.09 a can.
caused by the fungus Ustilago maydis, which can survive for several years as spores in soil and corn residue. Spores are spread by wind or through water splashing up onto young plants. Spores can also be spread through the manure of animals that have eaten infected corn.
Growing Avalon and Seminole XR this year. What might be a cause of poor germination of sweet corn? Last years first planting did not germinate very well. No bad weather and the seed wasn't old. I had to run the video at full screen but it looks like the goat may be in the carrots.
Great golly tall corn. Got to get rid of my bear. I loved the show. I make a salsa like corn ,black beans 1jar pimentos and 1small pepper hot or not. Squeeze fresh limes salt pepper to taste unless you have a good season salt. I'm really stumped tonight old goat is hiding but I can't find him. Egg basket behind Greg or little brown jug way up top it's a guess . Have a blessed week. ❤🙏
I've given up on the old goat, I've never won anything and the streak is holding. My question is, I have five different varieties of sweet corn and my question is will they cross pollinate? If it does will it ruin the taste of all of them.
Hominy corn is essentially just field corn - more commonly known as maize - that has been processed to give it a puffy, more meaty texture. To be made into hominy, corn kernels have to go through a process called nixtamalization.
Plant peaches n creme every year... Our neighbors lease the land around us out now and sometimes they plant soybeans but for the past two years they've planted corn... Critters, such as raccoons, squirrels, black birds and ravens will not touch that darn corn of theirs though... I'm not sure if it's due to the seeds themselves or the human waste being brought in for free as fertilizer at this point... idk But as soon as our corn starts to develop kernels the critters start to pounce on it... So we've had to pull it early the past two years so our yield is not good as it should be because of having to pick 5-7 days early so on the small side... smh I've never seen anything like this and I'm 47... My question is this: Is there anything you can sow with the corn that will help deter all the critters?
My grandpa always grew peaches n cream sweetcorn. Brings back sweet memories from my childhood
This is the first year I have tried growing corn. Wish me luck. Old Goat is behind Mrs. Hoss in the carrots.
I finally got most of my garden planted yesterday gonna do okra in a few weeks my dad who is 80 said I need to wait till it's hotter but I'm excited about the peaches and cream corn I planted. God bless yall

That is awesome!

I love you corny folks. Thanks for the encouragement, great tips, and successful material and products so we, too, can bring out the little farmer in us.
Old 🐐 is nicely tucked behind the bundle of carrots over Craig's right shoulder.
Make it a great day!
Our pleasure!
Hoss Tools has so many great corn varieties, i double crop each year and have triple cropped it, highly recommend the longest maturing varieties grown in the spring and a medium maturing varieties for a second crop or plant second and third crops with short maturity dates in zone 8B.
Thanks for the tips!
Great show. Just planted my corn today! I think the goat is behind the carrots.

no, but close
@@gardeningwithhoss Darn and not even close enough for a banana! Must have jumped down a shelf to dine on the carrots ............. silly Old Goat!

Trying ambrosia. I planted on the 26th. Eye balling it every day looking for sprouts.
I'm in Southern CA and grow year round. I've been picking celery all winter for soup, stir frys etc. I'm currently growing the Utah variety I believe. We're growing Seminole XR this year. Shelia, freeze dried corn is like candy! Old goat is behind the orange carrots, bottom row on Greg's side.
Look forward to this every week. Just found you guys this year. Thanks for the shows. The old goat is behind the carrots beside me hoss.
Welcome aboard!
I’ve been growing Temptress for a few years now absolutely love the variety! We like it super sweet in our parts. I will say agree with the chart. You can not skip a beat with it. It don’t take much to upset it and you’ll pay the price.

There is a Brookland , Texas also
Another great show i'm growing sugar bun corn this year And the old goat is behind the carrots Behind Greg.
Sounds great!
I'm in zone 5 B northern Missouri Unionville when should I plant corn says last frost is April 23rd great video as always and what does the old goat look like (Tom Brady ) lol
Well you answered that question about containers.gonna try some anyway so I can have some corn on the cob. Yummy
We love our canned corn! Been canning it for many years

I'm trying pink Celery this year from Baker Creek. It's supposed to be easier than green to grow. Results to follow.
I grew pink last year and it went to seed pretty quickly. Trying again this year. My green however is still going strong. I'm also trying red this year.
Hello, I duy frozen corn,it comes in a tube that tastes like fresh corn. Last year my corn did not do good.
Yes it is pretty
I didn’t know that merit was gone now! My grandpa thought so we queen was the best thing ever, my personal favorite is honey select
It needs to be at least 400 yards to prevent cross pollination. One thing to try is to plant where it does not tassel at the same time.
Wow couldn’t find old goat this week you hid it very well
“Had” a squirrel problem and I had to sow my corn 5 times. I use catch and relocate rodents for years. With these food prices, I’m not putting up with rodents anymore.
I think the old goat is behind Greg in the basket to the right of the red egg, right above his right shoulder.

good find
What is spacing from seed to seed in a row??
We normally do seed spacing 8".

Goeh I find corn the easiest thing to grow that I plant and always get good yield and I grow it all in protien tubs 36 of them in a block from feed store. have drip on them on a timer set to 1 time day then 2 then 3 as it gets hotter and bigger
and I feed it most every 3rd time I water it and thats often I also have 4 bug zappers one on each corner and that gets a lot of the worm moths and I use Both BT and spinosad I alternate both. also its in potting soil mixed about 30% cow chit and other things too. and calcium nitrate as gets taller. Usaly do incredible or peaches and cream this year I bought differant one from you Temptress
I think the old goat is behind Greg hiding in the carrots , tough find this week. Growing hickory king corn and a smaller patch of Indian corn. Thanks y’all.

Any idea why my corn has got corn smut the past 2 years? Ways to prevent it? Thanks.
caused by the fungus Ustilago maydis, which can survive for several years as spores in soil and corn residue. Spores are spread by wind or through water splashing up onto young plants. Spores can also be spread through the manure of animals that have eaten infected corn.
The squirrels and deer eat our corn!! The old goat is behind Greg, behind the 3 carrots on the bottom shelf.
Growing Avalon and Seminole XR this year.
What might be a cause of poor germination of sweet corn? Last years first planting did not germinate very well. No bad weather and the seed wasn't old.
I had to run the video at full screen but it looks like the goat may be in the carrots.
soil temps below 50 and not enough moisture
Great golly tall corn. Got to get rid of my bear. I loved the show. I make a salsa like corn ,black beans 1jar pimentos and 1small pepper hot or not. Squeeze fresh limes salt pepper to taste unless you have a good season salt. I'm really stumped tonight old goat is hiding but I can't find him. Egg basket behind Greg or little brown jug way up top it's a guess . Have a blessed week. ❤🙏

If I remember right honey select was the one Mr Greg didnt like but finished the whole bowl. Lol.
As a kid I would sneak some of my grandma's home churned butter and eat it like ice cream. Totally different taste from store corn.
Is the ole goat in the carrots, hard to tell???
I've given up on the old goat, I've never won anything and the streak is holding. My question is, I have five different varieties of sweet corn and my question is will they cross pollinate? If it does will it ruin the taste of all of them.
Check out video at 15:19 Spacing and Timing when planting different varieties
I spy with my little eye, the Old Goat behind the OG Old Goat, in the various. Though this week!

Is there a type of corn used specifically for Hominy?
Hominy corn is essentially just field corn - more commonly known as maize - that has been processed to give it a puffy, more meaty texture. To be made into hominy, corn kernels have to go through a process called nixtamalization.
Thank You
The Old Goat is hiding in the Easter eggs behind Greg’s right shoulder.
I wish I had the space and sun exposure to grow corn.
Plant peaches n creme every year... Our neighbors lease the land around us out now and sometimes they plant soybeans but for the past two years they've planted corn... Critters, such as raccoons, squirrels, black birds and ravens will not touch that darn corn of theirs though... I'm not sure if it's due to the seeds themselves or the human waste being brought in for free as fertilizer at this point... idk
But as soon as our corn starts to develop kernels the critters start to pounce on it... So we've had to pull it early the past two years so our yield is not good as it should be because of having to pick 5-7 days early so on the small side... smh I've never seen anything like this and I'm 47...
My question is this:
Is there anything you can sow with the corn that will help deter all the critters?
Unfortunately not that we know of
@@gardeningwithhoss Okay, thanks
We got 15 qts in the freezer from cutting off 325 ears last summer... Doesn't seem worth while anymore to be honest
