It's because you're unfamiliar with the complexity of the system. In order to have so much accomplished in a program, there has to be a lot of complexity in the way resources are managed and produced. Keep giving yourself time and find different ways to do things, it is far easier to accomplish these tasks with great precision using Illustrator.
It's honestly the most unnecessary complicated shite on earth lol as if they wanted to make it extra hard to learn, so that those who have mastered it feel great about themselves haha
Great, to the point, tutorial. I appreciate how you make sure we know where to get to certain menu options, but you don't waste a lot of time on it either and stay focused on achieving the finished result.
oh thank you so much man! I'm trying to illustrate a Mecha in illustrator, and you can imagine i need to divide shapes into more detailed shapes with many many lines. This is actually a slightly better way than how i learned in school. In school we cut shapes apart with other shapes with the shape builder and pathfinder, rather than split shapes with lines, so thank you
Wowwww, thank you! I was struggling with this so much yesterday, so this is super helpful! I've used the shape-builder tool to combine shapes, but I didn't realize it could also split them. Would be nice if that was a part of the pop-up s-b tool menu, but whatever xD Glad I found your video!
If you watch towards the end, come to find out you don’t need to eyedropper, just make sure your shape was the last thing selected and the fill/stroke will be the same. Oh well haha
Yeah, I saw that. I've only had the colour/stroke issue with the pathfinder and not the shape builder but it's always good to see how someone else works!
It will definitely apply whatever the fill/stroke is using this method, ran into that as soon as i started recording which is why i went the eyedropper route
Thank you! Its sort of my second day using the app, was so used to photoshop could not understand how to "crop" something. It was driving me nuts, and it ended up being trickier than I thought it would be --- this should really be simpler, but you explained it so well. Thanks so much!
i don't know how you have so litle likes, but all your tips are perfect for beginners, you are a good teacher, so keep doing this because you're very good and helpfull. tks so much man!
you don't need to use the eyedropper tool, just select both shapes then shape builder and press m1 while holding alt/option to delete the section you want to get rid off the shape builder tool it's really handy at speeding up some of these shape tasks
You guys Awesome. Thanks for sharing the easiest way of splitting training. I wanna know more, so I subscribed to this channel and clicked on the bell icon to get every update of your channel.
yep! I usually use pathfinder stuff. But, I feel like it's not as accurate because the width of the line will take away from the shape slightly. So, i'm pumped to try out shapebuilder more.
First, many thanks for your excellent videos and explanations. ISSUE: I am using CS6. I am following your instructions, but the Shape Builder does not do the job! Can you make any suggestions?

What if you drew a circle and wrote text and random shapes on it and you want to make the cirlcle hollow with the letters and shapes, meaning taking out the letters and leave an empty space where the letters n shapes were, can it be done?
You're great. I'm starting to learn Illustrator and this tutorials are just great. However my Illustrator version is a little bit old (CS4) and I cannot find the shape builder tool on my pannel. Is it something present only on CC version? Thank you. :-)

This is so great. I was battling with this yesterday and it was hectic, though I got it but I didn't know it was much easier like this. Thanks.
Is it just me or is Illustrator kinda more complicated than it needs to be?!
Dude, it's such a terrible program. I often find myself using Paint because it's so much simpler when you have to cut and slice objects. Unbelievable.

@@LightspeedPatrick you're right

Have you tried AutoCAD?
The "model space/viewport" function must have been invented by Christopher Nolan.
Quiz: What is the shortcut key for the Shape Builder tool?
Pixel & Bracket looked like SHIFT+M. Watched on my phone lol.
Since i can pin a comment, i might throw some trivia in once in a while :)

Came here for a quick tutorial and this was right to the point. Thanks
Cool, I need to try out using the eyedropper before the shape builder tool.

What about how we is split shape which is drawn by Pen Tool?
Thank you for this.
Thanks for the tutorial, Spencer!
This is great, worked prefect for what i needed.. do you know if this works on font as well?
It does if you outline the text, which means making it un-editable unfortunately
Very helpful and well done!
Could you still use the shape builder tool without doing the eye dropper process?
You're great, all around! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing more stuff than you needed to, appreciate the effort! :)
So good! I’ve been making paths out of thin lines and using the divide tool to do this haha 😬. Shape builder seems much nicer!
Like the pathfinder options? Another way to do it for sure, shape builder feels a little more hands on and direct. Love working with it!
yep! I usually use pathfinder stuff. But, I feel like it's not as accurate because the width of the line will take away from the shape slightly. So, i'm pumped to try out shapebuilder more.
One moment...... ok good the stroke width doesn’t matter with the shape builder tool haha. Just had to make sure real quick
you helped me a lot thank you !
WOW, Bro, You are amazing, Thank You!!
Amazing tutorial man :)

I’m pretty sure it dates back to CS3, maybe try searching in the help drop down?
@@pixelandbracket Thank you very much for your answer. I think there is no such a tool on CS4, instead I'm trying with Pathfinder. ;-)
thanks for this
I would like to divide my pants pattern shape by 4 segments with a 3/4inch gap How would I do that?
Awesome.
Thanks for the explanation man ! Really helpful !
Many thanks! It,s great!
It is not necessary to use eyedropper to divide the circle, right?
After creating a TRIANGLE with the polygon tool, the mouse cursor is not snapping to the center point. Please elaborate on this issue.
Thanks mate. Hope you are doing well.
