Tattoos can be very personal and meaningful to those who have them, so I think it's not very fair to call it a fad, especially because it's been around for a very very long time. There's no shame in being old with tattoos.

Wow, I guess I must be millions of years old, then, because tattoos were much less common when I was young. They were much more particular to some in the military (enlisted, esp.), bikers, and inmates (current or former)--definitely not a general fad like they are now. They have been around a long time, but not as decoration in Christian or Jewish culture originally. Try to even find the word "tattoo" used in England or the US a couple of centuries and more ago--it's a relatively recent development in this culture.

It's been around three yrs of servitude and I feel my tattoos are a constant reminder of my life before being saved. Therefore they are not a necessarily a blot on my faith but a reminder of the lack of it.

It's amazing how many people clicked on this video knowing fully well it was going to be about this person's way of life and opinions on things found it necessary to leave comments berating her for the way she chose to live life and her views of life. That's pretty hypocritical in my book. Why is it okay for people to live however they want to until it goes against what you believe?

I'm in Canada and am familiar with Hutterites, are there similarities?
We have a Saskatoon Orchard on our farm and during the 10 years that we ran a U-pick, we had the Hutterites come out to pick a lot. We even became a trusted destination and the picking team of late-teens, early-twenties young ladies were allowed to come to our place by themselves. We spent many many hours and days sharing our lifestyles out in the orchard. It's time I cherish.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I too felt called to cover a few years ago and have found so much peace and joy in it. It has really helped me to humble myself, especially in a world of looks and outward appearances mean so much, which sadly is even in the church. We are called to be set apart, different, unusual, spotless, and blamelesss, not look and act like the world around us. I was called out publicly for it in church which was so embarrassing, but I didn't let it faze me because you don't know what you don't know. I grew up in the church and had never known anyone to cover and never heard teaching on it, so I can see how people simply don't understand it. In my research I studied 1 Cor 11 for months and months. Especailly looking into the meanings in Greek.
The word for covering in 1 Corthians 11:4, 5,6,7, 13, is the word, katakalýptō, from katá, "down, and kalýptō, "to cover"-cover down, to make appropriate (complete), i.e. to wear a veil.
It is the same word used for the veil that separated the Holy of holies from the priests. It is clearly taking about a peice of fabric.
But vrs 15 does NOT use the same word for covering. Vrs 15. "but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering."
This is a different word for "cover"= "peribolaion," that which is thrown around or a mantel that can be thrown around (As in when a women tosses or throws her hair around) which can be very alluring to men.
This is where we get the saying, "Let your hair down."
Up until only the last generation woman covered in Church. It was only during the sexual revolution that Chriatin women in North America stopped covering their heads. ALL of our grandmothers would have covered in church. This is why the Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, orthodox churches, and messiniac Jews (Jews who beleive in Jesus) etc still cover their hair.
Also, here's some verses in the OT about head covering. Hope these help if anyone is interested.
Isaiah 47:1-2. Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones and grind flour, "put off your veil", strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers.
(So as we can see, even virgins were to keep their heads covered and save their hair for their husbands. Otherwise it is like they are showing all their nakedness).
Numbers 5:18. Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, "uncover the woman’s head," and put the offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse.
Also Genesis 20:16 says in the Hebrew
Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this is "a covering for her eyes" (to put back on her wedding covering) you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked.
From what I understand In Genesis 24:65. Rebekah covers herself because the bridal price has already been paid. 2 vrs later we see Isaac take Rebekah bright away into his tent. There was no wedding ceremony. Her covering herself was an outward show of her marriage to Isaac. Since they were married he was allowed to take her right away into his tent and "uncover" her.
We are not supposed to be like the world. So thank you for sharing.
    1 Corinthians 11:1-18
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is the man and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head unveiled dishonors his head, but every woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a woman will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her veil her head. For a man ought not to cover or veil his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. That is why a woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head unveiled? Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God.
(Paul says they have no practice of arguing about this. This is what the churches of God do. Period!)

The more I study the Bible (which I have quite a bit) the more I think the life u lead isn't exactly "necessary" for salvation but definitely more in line with God's wishes. I was hoping you could answer a few questions about your community and the path that people outside your community should take. I'm a single mother with 3 kids ages 5, 9, and 15. I was officially saved about 4 years ago (although I knew God as a teen and believe he has had me in waiting while I struggled with my life). I really have SO many questions but I'll start with this...how would your elders suggest someone in my position proceed? I've struggled with how to completely change our lives toward God without shocking my children into being turned against God since we have lived a fairly secular life up until a few years ago. I am not planning on suddenly joining a community like yours but I'm curious about how you would advise someone in my position if they were to want to live the life you are. Thank u so much. For instance, if two people loved each other and wanted to give each other the long term emotional support that comes with marriage but were not open to being gifted with children, I assume they wouldn't get married (and I'm guessing wouldn't live together?). But would they present themselves as a couple and be viewed as such by the community at large?
In a similar vein, are there any same-sex couples? If not, what does a young person who finds themselves exclusively attracted to the same gender typically choose? I imagine they would either remain single within the community or they would choose to leave/not join as an adult

Ötzi (found on the border of Austria/Italy died circa 3300 BCE and his tattoos are thought to be linked to acupuncture treatments). Egyptian mummies believed to be priestesses (they were only able to find these using infrared light as the resins used during the mummification process caused the plant matter used as ink to fade significantly). South American mummies. The Princess of Ukok (found near the border of China and died circa 500 BCE) and other mummies found in the same area as her.
I should have said a millennia plus but whatever.

    • @ccddle
      @ccddle 4 роки тому +3

I should add that just because mummies have been found with them doesn't mean that tattoos were the norm in their culture... It also does not mean that it wasn't the norm. Mummies with tattoos are rare to find just as, from what I've read, mummies are rare and that could be due to a lot of different factors other than the preference that culture had on tattoos. It is hard to say. Sure, in our culture tattoos may be becoming increasingly popular but I think the fact that there is evidence of body modification in the form of tattoos going as far back as Ötzi and probably farther than that minimizes the idea that tattoos are a fad. They've always been a part of human civilization. And I'm positive that just like our culture has different feelings about tattoos, people back then might have felt the same as well.
But that is of course a personal opinion... In my mind, tattoos are in line with the probable widespread use of psychedelics. It's a complicated conversation on something that, to me, is extremely interesting but is difficult to prove or disprove. Archaeology isn't perfect, either. I mean look at the debate on pre-Clovis civilizations and how they got to the Americas.

@@LaurafromtheBruderhof if you do believe reverence for life extends to plants and animals, then why do you continue to eat animals? Certainly, we need to eat, but eating plants, the least likely to suffer, makes far more sense. Also, so many more plants are killed to feed animals to feed people than if plants are the direct food source. All around, the compassionate choice is veganism, and then vegetarianism.

Other animals do not hesitate to hurt because they are acting purely on instinct. Humans have the cognitive and spiritual capacity to ask moral questions. Research shows that we can eat a very healthy diet without consuming animals. Why not make a choice that does not involve suffering and pain? If we can eat well AND be compassionate, surely that is the better choice.

Look, it does make me sad that the Bruderof reject people whose lifestyles and identities do not fit a conservative interpretation of the Bible. I personally believe that the Bruderof's position on these individuals and issues is not reflective of Christ's.
However, I can't sit here criticizing Laura's commitment to the community and her desire to share her knowledge with all of you. We can disagree with her opinions, but unlike other Christians sects in society, she owns her opinions respectfully. She does not go out into the world preaching them to the harm of those individuals. Laura lives and enjoys a peaceful simplicity based on her Christian convictions with a like-minded community.
Honestly, how many times have you wished that the anti-LGBTQ+ Christians would go away and be their own community. So why, when a representative of such a community makes an informational video about it, are you criticizing her? And make no mistake- I pray and hope for a world where peace is no longer reserved for only the non-gay and other conservative religious. Unfortunately, it's not the world that we live in, and what the Bruderof gain in their many sacrifices they also lose. Laura doesn't lie awake at night worrying about her finances or health like the rest of us do, and her decision to separate herself from the world means that she has little concern for the people who are lying awake at night with those worries because she's not seeing them on the news every day. I face that harsh reality every day at the expense of my peace, yet running away from those worries seems selfish to me. We need people in this world with ambitions to make a difference and a mission to help those who are struggling with an all too relatable struggle. I absolutely respect Laura in prioritizing her happiness and peace, even as I might reject her lifestyle because I believe that my fulfillment must come in the trenches.

I agree with Gigi. I have also been wondering how non-violence and not being a plant-based community can go together. Genesis 1:29 "Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food." If the Garden Eden was God's original choice before sin, AND it's practical in today's culture, why is it not reflected in the way of living at the Bruderhof? Having dominion over all creatures can also be interpreted in having to take good care of them. You shall not kill does not exclude animals either. I read a post on the Bruderhof website from 2016 that claimed that plants have feelings, too. Let's say that's true and equal to the feelings and sufferings to animals. A plant-based diet would kill MANY less plants as well, as the animals are fed with plants. Thus, overall, a plant-based diet means less suffering and less violence.

Do Bruderhof women never cut their hair like Amish nor Mennonite? Perhaps that would explain why one never sees bangs?

What if a married woman can get pregnant but is a high risk for medical complications if she does? Would the Bruderhof support her decision to have only two kids and then use birth control? Are they ok with birth control for anyone, whether they have kids or not?

Dear sister, I would like to pose the question: How is it that you clearly oppose all and any form of violence, yet when you speak about hunting dear and wildlife there is a smile on your face? Is it not so that these beings are sentient - feel pain as we do, love and are protecting of their young as we are, bleed as we do? Is it not so that God has given these beasts the breath of life as he gave onto us? (As even stated in the bible)
So by merely acknowledging the reality as god created it, the killing of animals regardless of the weapons used - is violence.
And I believe it furthermore encourages the killings in this world, thus feeding the bloodthirsty demonic entities around us.
I clearly see the light and love of our holy father in you, I pray you will make that connection and help us end the killing of innocent sentient beings which hold god's breath of life.
Amen, all goodness to you and god bless

God gave us animals FOR FOOD. (as even stated in the Bible)

    • @SarymaryQuiteContrary
      @SarymaryQuiteContrary 4 роки тому +1

@@shelleylee8774 incorrect. When going by the bible, there are several statements, some of which oppose one another directly, therefore it is necessary to include context. God allowed for animal consumption only "sparingly" and this was in times where the planet's vegetation was depleted due to the big flood/ice age and so forth, therefore god sacrificed his beloved beasts for the survival of man kind.
Animals have the breath of life which god has blessed sentient beings on earth with, we are of God as are the animals. The bible clearly says for us to consume the crops of the land, not the beings that run from us for dear life. The bible condones bloodshed (of any kind) preaches love, compassion and states killing as a sin.
When using God's given intellect along with the compassion in our hearts (if still present) it is more than clear that meat consumption is of the devil as it requires murder and bloodshed, plant consumption does not.
I pray for this connection to be made. Amen

Actually sentience is the concept of being self aware Organized thought and all that. Very few species are considered sentient and none of the common food animals are.

    • @SarymaryQuiteContrary
      @SarymaryQuiteContrary 4 роки тому

@@eirika2001 I am afraid that what you've just pointed out does not align with modern scientific research and consensus.
"Common food" animals, though I find this term to be misleading and very disrespectful towards these beings, are very much sentient. Even marine animals such as fish and tiny crabs are highly sentient.
Regarding land animals it goes as far as to pigs, which by the age of one year (when they are slaughtered) reach the sentient awareness of a three year old human child.
The only way these two "beings" or "persons" (because yes, animals infact have personalities) differ from each other, is appearance and language. God knew what he was doing and he does not intend for us to feed our hungry bellys with the death of another breathing and feeling being, only people being mislead by demonic entities could truly believe that our almighty, loving father is of such cruel, bloodthirsty nature. Amen and blessings

Hi Laura, I really like your q&a videos, but for me the answers are too short and therefore superficial. Why don’t you take more time to answer them ( if nessesary) and go deeper? For me topics like homosexuality on the bruderhof would be interesting. Or your attitude towards other religions/concepts of living... I have lots of topics and questions but they are not to be answered in 30 seconds... anyway thank you for giving us a glimpse of your life on the bruderhof!

What did you like and dislike about living here? Thanks.

I respect your faith and community but with tattoos I’m sure it is isn’t a fad as it has strong links to various faiths across the world and ancient traditions. I am excited to think that if I get to old age then I will have a lot of stories to tell through my tattoos however cringe or outdated by that time 😊 although most of my tattoos thus far are nature based and mostly of mountain scenery as that is where I feel most content and at peace. They are a strong reminded to ground myself and keep going through tough times. So whilst I respect people decisions to not ink their bodies I also do not believe it is a fad or cosmetic thing in all cases.

As a Christian l see all faiths that believe in Jesus Christ, God the Father and The Holy Spirit as equal in the sight of God. He loves us all the same . I have friends who are wonderful Christians but Catholic. Thank goodness Jesus accepts all His Children as long as we bel the Bible and accept Him into our Lives as Lord and Saviour. As farcas Tattoos go l have a heart with Forget- me-knots to remind me of my husband's Dementia and His love for me. Regarding marriage , what if you prefer not to have children. Not everyone wants them or can have them. I always sad for those who would want children and cannot. It would bound to feel worse in a Community setting. A constant reminder of loss. I thought the young lady who spoke was very sweet though.
