  • Before I have to start this new channel with a bang, why not listen to the first aircheck for my new channel. This is the final moments of WQEW from 12/27/98. For those of you may not remember or even heard of, WQEW was a station that plays Middle of the Road music as part of the format, and it ran from 1992 until 1998. WQEW was a great station that plays Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Johnny Mathis and many others. They had some great talent like Stan Martin, Jonathan Schwartz, Chuck Leonard (from WABC) and others that are part of the station.
But sadly, on December 27th, 1998, WQEW signed off for the last time when the station becomes Radio Disney. I used to listened to that station since the 1990's and I enjoyed listened it when it was the home for "American Popular Standards." I missed that station a lot, but there is one place to get your standards fix is satellite radio which is Sirius/XM and internet radio stations like TuneIn, Pandora and others.
If you haven't heard the final moments of WQEW, here is a clip from 12/27/98, just two days after Christmas to hear the final minutes of WQEW. On this clip, you will hear Stan Martin giving his final words until the station faded away, and during that final day, you will hear Leroy Anderson's "Forgotten Dreams", the song in which you were familiar with it when it was first used on KABC-TV in Los Angeles when the station signed off back in the early to mid 1980's and also on WABC-TV as it was also played during the ending to the Friday evening and Weekend editions of "Eyewitness News" from back in the 1980's. After that, it became Radio Disney. I hope you all enjoy this memorable aircheck.
Starting 12/27 will be 15 years since WQEW signed off the air for the final time.

As I am writing this, I am sad to report that 1560 AM no longer exists on the New York radio dial. After some time as radio Disney, it eventually ended up in the hands of a religious broadcaster, and after a while, the station went off in 2020. A sad end to what was once the classical station of the New York Times, and then the home of American popular standards. I think we need those two formats now more than ever.

Anyone under the age of 30 will live to see the end of terrestrial radio (and newspapers, magazines, and possibly - television). No advertisers or paid subscribers - no radio. I was depressed about this for a while, but all things change. Who knows? Their world may very well be better. Or worse. Time will tell.

I was working nights in 98 when I listened to this station.
We had a boom box with a cassette recorder that still worked. I taped a few xmas broadcasts and the sinatra tribute all week.
    Miss the station.

I have a sad update on 1560 AM in New York. It appears to have come to an end after over 100 years of broadcasting. It has left a great legacy that will last forever. Rest in peace 1560 AM, New York. From the classical station of the New York Times, to QEW, radio Disney and family radio. You will be missed.

after Radio Disney closed down it was sold to a religous broadcaster and the tower site was moved which reduced it's 50,000 watt blowtorch signal down to low power. from what I read there was some complaints from people near the transmitter for interference issues so they shut it down

I wasn't born in the era of Standards music but my grandma liked that music and would often listen to QEW, so I would get a taste of that music when visiting her. When Radio Disney took over in late 98 grandma wasnt thrilled but I took a liking to Disney with all their pop songs and upbeat commentary. So fast forward to early 2015, now it was my turn to being not all too thrilled by Radio Disney going off the air.....So Family radio signed on in early 15 and now my mother in law started to love the Christian radio programming...fast forward again to early 21 and now it seems Family Radio if off 1560...She said she's now not thrilled of it's going off the air ....So we've got almost 30 years of coming and going radio formats with as of now, no radio station on 1560 am currently....

***** Lew Dickey will never let that happen. WABC has Don Imas, Sean Hanity, etc. WABC is one of the most listen to AM Station in the entire NYC Market. It's June 2, 2015, and Don Imas is on.

But a *brilliant* marketing strategy- broadcasting only on AM signals that may be hard to hear, and airing edited versions of the songs, will essentially force the listeners to buy the songs to hear them as intended. Keep in mind, Disney also owns Hollywood Records.

Unfortunately, AM's are dying off as the senior band passes 100 in 2021-22 Noted that 50kw WINS now has an FM at 92.1 as it tries to keep audience. And new, local management was the salvation of WABC-AM. Originally WQXR, sad to see 1560 go.

The New York Times, who then owned WQXR, decided to switch the AM signal to standards (while keeping the FM station's classical music format) after the old WNEW-AM was sold to Bloomberg and became 24/7 business news.
