- KDWN 720 and KXST 1140 in Las Vegas have officially gone silent on March 2, 2023. There was the national anthem, the Nevada state song, a picture of the transmitter sites using slow scan TV, and morse code.
Audacy sold the land upon which the towers are located for $40 million!
Beasley used to own KDWN. They initially sold the land where the original towers once stood, then diplexed KDWN on the KXST site.
Audacy swapped KXTE 107.5 for Beasley's KDWN 720 and K268CS 101.5 with no money changing hands. The reason for the swap was to get Audacy out of the lease with Beasley for KDWN. This enabled Audacy to sell the land to Amazon for $40 million. The towers will eventually come down, and Amazon will build a warehouse.
Art bell just shed a tear in heaven
Classy Sign-off. Sad. I hope the future includes a new radio powerhouse from Las Vegas to serve the Southwest airwaves with dignity.
Out of curiosity, I looked up the Q codes in Morse Code; “QRT” is short for, “I am ending transmission / turning off the radio”. Therefore, the last line of text reads “KXST is suspending operation, ending transmission and signing off” and “KDWN is suspending operations, ending transmission and signing off”.
Thank you for assembling this video
My favorite station when I lived in Vegas. Hot Talk 1140 KSFN North Las Vegas.
When they shut the AM stations here never herd them use Morse Code at the end as they just shut them down followed the sign off. Many more AM stations will continue to shut though out the US as they are doing in the UK & EU as well on AM & Long Wave though not used in North America.
Roy Masters must of been crying in heaven when KDWN went off the air.
that's one hell of a way to sign off
Like spark gap and commercial use of morse code, AM sadly is on its way out. Demand for the real estate, increasing costs and competition from streaming, it's only a matter of time before AM goes completely dark. The SSTV and morse message at the end was a nice touch.
Very sad to see them go.
So, selling off a radio station to allow Amazon for an accessible delivery service to the Las Vegas area? That is quite unusual but, okay.
Well, that's one way to sign-off a station one last time.
Okay now it makes sense why KXTE was sold to Beasley after watching this.
Goodbye 720am Las Vegas
This is wonderful but sad. I'm wondering what is the signal right at 700khz? A local spur?
The creepiest sign off
So that’s what’s happening.
